Well they are signing these players now to "huge" contracts because GM's know that both QB salaries and the salary cap are going to inflate over the next two years. The QB's get to spend a year feeling like they are the top paid QB's in the league and the GM's get 4-5 years of these QB's at the middle of what will be the new normal for QB pay scale.

For that list, if I get their contracts (which are essentially a series of 1 year deals) Kaepernick then Dalton.

The Dalton deal makes sense because there's nothing better available, not because Dalton has proven himself a franchise QB. Ginger Flacco for sure.
Ginger hasn't gone to and won playoff games each of his first 5 years, went to 3 AFCC games, won a Super Bowl and has a Super Bowl MVP.

The devil is always in the details with these deals. Flacco deal is essentially 3 years and renegotiate. Dalton is 2 years and team options, for examples.

I think its more accurate to say that the Ravens did all those things despite Joe Flacco, rather than because of him. He is Dilfer 2.0

I read that the team had to do that since a player needs to have 4 years in the NFL before they can be put on IR and not count against the 53 man roster. Basically he needs to clear waivers first and then they can place him on IR, but another team has the chance to either claim him and pick up his salary this year (unlikely), or they can claim and sign him to a multi year contract before he hits IR. Since he is a FA next year it was the only real option.

I hate Flacco, but there's no way they win the Super Bowl without his incredible playoff run and the Raven's D was nowhere near as good as Dilfer had

I believe the same thing occurred with Ballard and NE signed him.

Yup. NE did the same thing again a week or so ago with a RB named Gaffney, from either the Panthers or Jags, cant remember which. But the situation is a little different. I think Ballard had another year left on his contract, after the IR year. Which meant that the pats got at least a year of potential on his lower pay-grade. Whereas it sounds like Hunter is IN the final year of his contract, which means that claiming him off waivers is pointless unless you resign him. You would essentially be agreeing to pay his salary for his team. And gaining nothing.

So apparently Tom Brady is still awesome and the Patriots look way better than the Redskins. Not unexpected, but always good to hear.

Yup, exactly. There was some talk that when the Seachickens cut Bowie that the Browns violated some unwritten rule about claiming guys sent to waivers for IR reasons (Seattle claimed they cut him because he came into camp fat and out of shape but the real reason is he needs major shoulder and they probably would have taken him back on IR had he cleared waivers). Basically a necessary roster move due to the rules, but then again, even if Gore goes downhill I'm not sure with the Niners RB depth that Hunter has a place on this team anymore.

Joe Flacco's contract just did more damage to the Bengals than he ever could. Well played Ravens.
Whenever a normally bad or just forgettable poster makes a great post like this and it gets ignored I feel compelled to bring it to everyone's attention.

I just read the details of the Dalton contact. I like it. $96 million is the base with the rest based on playoff success. The only way that $115 million is even possible is if the Bengals win the Super Bowl this year. Looks like we'll be paying him $115 million.
