And yet the Trap Game is absolutely a real occurrence.

This is the kind of thing 538 needs to hit.

Debunking the Trap Game and Letdown Game Myths | The Harvard Sports Analysis Collective

We'll make this quick.

"Using Pro-Football-Reference's wonderful game finder, I observed every game where a team above .500 played a below .500 team over the past 10 seasons (2002-2011). Over 1359 games, the above .500 team won 79.5% of the time. We must compare the above .500 team's win percentage in trap games to this base rate of 79.5% in order to see if good teams lose at a statistically significantly higher rate.

Limiting the sample to our trap game definition (n=515), the above .500 team won 80.5% of the time, a full percentage point higher than in the full sample.Far from a losing more frequently, as we would expect by the trap game logic, good teams tend to do even better against worse teams the week before they play a good team. However, this difference is not statistically significant: a difference of means t-test yields a t-value of just 0.60. So we fail to reject the null hypothesis that good teams have a different win percentage in trap games than they do in any game against a sub-.500 team."

As much as "it's a business" I can't believe that every single player is just out there treating football like a job. I'm guessing it takes a borderline obsessive competitive attitude/lifestyle to make it to the NFL period, much less have a long and successful career. I have to believe the players would bust their asses to win a repeat Super Bowl before playing on an 4-12 shitter even if the pay was the exact same for sucking. Guys like Albert Haynesworth are (hopefully) a small minority.
You need to watch, I believe, episode 3 or 4 of this season of Hard Knocks. Roddy White straight up comes out and says that as a young player he was basically just going out there and half assing it for a paycheck. And the way he said it made it sound like that's pretty much how 90% of the rookies and probably 2nd/3rd year players are.

A lot of these guys get by just on being genetic freaks. They don't have a work ethic because they haven't really had to try in their lives before. Some of them grow out of it, but I'd bet most don't.

I'm sure they start the season all gung-ho about winning, and even throughout the season probably get upset about losing. But they aren't nearly as invested in the team as a fan is. As long as they're still getting their $500k-however many millions per season, who cares, right? They're not thinking about the future, or else there wouldn't be so many athletes who file for bankruptcy right after getting out of the league.

I had him out of my fantasy lineup because of the concussion now looks like he can ride the pine a little longer.

I mean the chargers and panthers do have the better QB so no wonder they are above the bears.

So it looks like we resigned the kicker that we cut originally. wtf, lol.

The Panthers will probably end up as one of the worst teams in the league this year, so yeah being ahead of the Bears in any list right now just makes that list pretty suspect.

It's all going to come down to the D again this year, if the Bears can be even league average in that regards then we'll be a playoff team. Otherwise it's just going to be a lot of points scored and games blown due to not being able to stop anybody.

I feel like media and fansalwayswildly overstate the motivation factor at the pro level. I mean, it matters but people pretend the only reason teams win 12 games is because they really wanted to super hard and not because they're just a better team. Like Bill Simmons, who I generally like, reallyruns with this shit. He's 100% convinced the only reason the Pats went 16-0(before finishing 18-1) and scored like crazy was because they were so angry about the Spygate stuff. Not at all because they had a HoF coach, QB, and WR all at their peaks. So I guess they were just unmotivated in the Super Bowl is all.
While the Patriots going 16-0 was mostly because of their talent, why were they throwing 4th quarter bombs up by 3+ scores other than as a middle finger to the league and throwing down the gauntlet to their next opponent? There was definitely an intimidation factor they were going for. I think emotion weighs in more significantly than you're giving it credit for. The 2011 Giants and 2012 Ravens limped into the playoffs. Once they got there, the Giants defense became dominant, and Flacco became unstoppable. I don't know how you explain that transformation in any other way than an emotional change with the team and players. There's nothing that changes physically when a player "catches fire".

Because they did that before. And they do that now 5+ years later. Because that's how Belicheck coaches them.

edit: That's not to say they didn't want to stick it to people. I'm saying it's not why they were ABLE to. Which is what people think, that they played sooo much better than everyone because they were super mad.

People underestimate wildly underestimate chance and convince themselves of deeper meaning when things don't turn out how they expect. '07 Giants were a wide open drop by Patrick Crayton pass from being eliminated in the second round and the Ravens would have been also if not for the worst play by a safety ever in Rahim Moore.

Neither team won because of whatever worn out sports cliche you want to use, they won because shit happens
