We had an interesting conversation in the office today and I wonder if anyone knows. But, on average, how much on the dollar for NFL contracts do the players actually get? Between federal income tax, social, state income tax, NFLPA dues, agent fees and all that? I was imagining on the high side like 55 cents on the dollar.

1) Gross vs. net: It never fails; when my clients get their first NFL check they call me and say something is wrong. They are floored by how much is taken out for taxes and other deductions. Unfortunately, the shock doesn?t resonate long enough. I would say 90% of players have some type of direct deposit or their check gets mailed to their investment advisor and the players never see the net amount. Thus, they think they always are making more money (in gross numbers) than they actually are.
I don't know for certain but I imagine it's pretty damn high.

For how many more years do you think people will bring up Ray Rice whenever a player gets suspended? The NFL really didn't do themselves a favor with that one.

I am a Ravens hater but I'm already getting tired of the trite joke about how to lower suspensions you need to hit a woman

Oh, I agree. But I don't see it ending anytime soon (maybe after he retires?). You've got to imagine a lot of people in the NFL corporate structure are regretting signing off on that one.

It depends on state income tax more than anything. Lets take Texas to make it easy (0% state tax). Fed takes 39.6%. Agent takes 3%. Now throw in everything else and the player is lucky to take home 50%. In a state with state income tax, it must be less than 50%.

Some awful GOAT QB rankings from Sports Cheat Sheet

tldr:

1. Joe Montana
2. John Elway
3. Dan Marino
4. Tom Brady
5. Brett Favre
6. Jonny Unitas
7. Peyton Manning
8. Steve Young
9. Otto Graham
10. Fran Tarkenton

The rankings around Peyton, Favre, Elway and Marino make 0 sense.

The only possible way Elway is over Marino is if his rings are factoring in. With that said, how the hell does Peyton end up at 7 if he's won a superbowl?

Favre and Peyton both have 1... and Favre is over Peyton fucking Manning?

Also I'm about ready to include Brees in these top 10 lists. Otto Graham and Fran T can fuck themselves.
