To be clear, the Vikings FO definitely didn't like how outgoing Kluwe was and they probably didn't like having his outgoing personality associated with controversial views. Kluwe is a smart nerd that grew up in the internet age. He would probably get along with most people here. The Vikings handled him wrong. To the all-white younger fan base up here in MN he was very well liked. The team should have marketed his personality, not shunned it.
However, Faltigoth lays out the situation correctly. Because of how long he'd been in the league, he was due to make something like 1.7 million. Even if he signs a brand new contract with a new team, he still makes more than a rookie because of his veteran status. Combine that with his average (but not bad) numbers and its pretty easy to say they just decided to move on. I won't say his views didn't haveanythingto do with it and I certainly won't say the way heexpressedthose views also didn't have anything to do with it, but I'd say his performance on the field and expensive contract was pretty much 99% of it. The higher ups on the team definitely didn't like him though and that's a shame because even after his career as a punter he probably could have been a very well liked media guy involved in activism and MN sports for the rest of his life.
Kluwe will say Priefer instructed him to not out kick his coverage and that explains his poor stats. Seems like he's just kind of a brat that has an excuse for everything though.
I liked him a lot before this. And I still like him now. And I do truly believe he feels wronged in this situation, but he's painted himself into a corner where he's just lashing out and it's really sad.
For the record, Priefer without question denied the allegations when they first came out and now he's suspended 3 games so it's not like Kluwe was lying about that part (I don't think anything thought he was though).
