I mean compiled stats over the course of a few seasons, and those stats don't really get into what I was asking. The simplest way to ask it would be: On what percentage of punts is an actual return attempted.

You can't take away punting because you'd be taking away one of the Bengal's best phases of the game with Huber

There was a couple year period before the 49ers drafted Gore, where Andy Lee,the Punter, was the best player on the team. Those were dark days

There was about a 4 year stretch there in the late 2000s where Dustin Colquitt(punter) was the Chiefs MVP. We were really bad.

It's difficult to gauge a punter's impact unless he flat out pooches a kick, in which case the impact is that the other team benefits. They're asked to do something different on just about every single punt, so Kluwe's claim that he was asked to punt as to not out distance the coverage unit is rooted in reality, regardless of whether or not he was telling the truth. I want to say a decent portion of the impact of a punter rests on the coverage team anyway.

I think most special teams coaches would be fine with conceding 5 yards shallower a punt if it meant for 100% certainty the returner was going to fair catch it. Returners are fast and agile fucks and once they get into open space they can be lethal. Trying to man mode and line drive a punt where the returner catches it with 20 yards of green fields is not a good situation.

It seems to me, they used to gauge a punter's worth on 'hang time'. You don't really even hear the announcers talk about that anymore.

Punters are hard to qualify like many are saying. Pins inside the 10 are important but punters are really only given the opportunity to pin a few times a game. The next would be punts fair caught but that can also be misleading because what if he just jacks it straight into the sky and it goes 30 yards. Not exactly a great punt. Then we can look at distance. Like I said before sometimes that can be misleading because you don't want a punter who out punts the coverage. So really net yardage and pins are the two best stats go judge a punter.

Sounds like Rerolled needs to come up with its own punt metrics, which can then rival ESPN's QBR!

One of you brilliant mathematician types get on it

We have to make punter rushing yards the most heavily weighted stats. And find a way to downplay perfect coffin corner style punts.

Guy muffs a punt and rushes for 4 yards? Better game than Scifres pinning a team inside their 5 yard line 4 times!

Pins should be the paramount stat then net the secondary when evaluating a punter IMO. The job of the punter is to change field position. The best way to do that is to pin the opposing team back. Right now it seems like pinning punts still affect their net yard average. Which I feel they really shouldn't. If you're punting from your 40 and you pin on the 5 you only netted a 35. Which is a whole different ballgame than if you were punting from your own 30 and netting a 35.

I don't know why they even allow the opponent to return the ball. I mean if professional baseball players can choose where to hit the ball, im pretty sure we should expect professional punters to be able to pretty much coffin kick like.... 100% of the time, every time.

Yet they don't and can't. That is like saying an NBA player should be able to swoosh a three every time they take the shot because they're professionals. Having to judge how much muscle to put into something, where to hit the ball and all that is difficult and complex not to mention the 350 lb men trying to crush you. It is like in soccer where corner kicks are constantly fucked up even by the best.

I actually think most of them probably are capable of it...in practice. The problem is that during a game you have the other team trying to block it.

They say that most college punters who are good and can't make it in the NFL are because they can't get the ball off fast enough. I want to say it was like 2.5 seconds or something. Not sure where I heard this, but it was probably Hard Knocks.

okay well the single most difficult thing in sports is hitting a fastball, so yea once again if good hitters can choose their spot then we should at least expect a great to perfect kick every time

edit: hell even golf is 1000x more difficult. If tiger is putting balls on the green on his 2nd or 3rd stroke... i mean

Yeah I remember that tournament where Tiger has to tee the ball up and swing at it all in under 3 seconds. Perfect 1:1 comparison. The biggest sport in the country is probably just not trying to get the best people at it.
