Giants already have ~20m a year in cap money slotted toEliuntil 2019. Giants have OBJ at the very least on his rookie contract until 2018. Eli will be 37 at that point with 1 year left barring extensions or any other fuckery. There's a very real chance OBJ languishes as the best offensive player on a team for the prime of his career.

The Megatron contract actually ended up bringing the market back down a bit. Dez and Thomas signed for about ~14m/yr versus Johnson's ~16.5m. Shorter time though, but that's smart because it lines them up for a second big payday.

BTW, Brees is going to cost $30m on the cap this year. Saints are right fucked for the foreseeable future.

Giants rarely pay receivers. Even Cruz's contract was a little ridiculous.

Beckham isn't stupid, he'll stay in NY because of the opportunities it presents, unless someone wants to throw $20m at him.

Not sure how long Eli plans on playing for either.

Current year or NEXT year?

if NEXT year then the saints need to renegotiate a better cap deal offseason.

while ya'll hate the Patriots look at Brady's cap numbers, and what happens offseason every other year basically, once the cap number is about to go up, brady and the patriots redo the deal, lower the cap hit for ~2 years, then...Renegotiate.

he makes the money more upfront in redone bonus's, has a lower "base" but gets about the same money, while getting the cap space free to get more players around him so that they can continuously contend year after year....after year.

tying up about one third of your money in 2 players on a 53 man roster isn't going to- for the most part- win you the superbowl, being able to spend more money on the "middle" guys helps a lot.

i mean hell last year the pats had what ~10 million or so tied up with browner(3 mil) and revis(7mil), this year, they got play ALMOST as good as last year, for about 1.2 million.(Butler and Ryan - butler is just over 500k ryan is at ~690k- though imo once their contracts are up, they will get good pay raises(to around 2 million each probably min)

Sorry, next year.

Cap math is one of those fun little games execs like to play. Patriots are the best at playing it and it goes down to Bill's refusal to hold on to players once he thinks they're no longer worth it.

For Brees, they can do some things to alleviate his hit, but then they're just kicking the can down the road, so to speak. On a 36 year old QB. Next year is the last in his current contract. So if they extend it out, they ease the pain a little bit for 2016, but hold on to an aging QB on a team with a myriad of issues overall and are probably still on the hook for 20m+ a year just for him. However, ~20m/yr seems to be the going rate for franchise QBs so who knows what they're going to do.

Brady takes way less than he could because he has a wife that makes as much or more than him, Patriots are lucky Brady cares more about his legacy than his paycheck--something to be thankful for if you're a Pats fan. Otherwise every team would be doing the same shit.

Yeah ... when your wife makes 100m+ a year you don't really need to worry about your salary.

I don't think the wife is the deciding factor there. Pretty sure any QB in the league would be willing to make the same sacrifices if it was really only about money. The big contracts are about ego too though.

Brady's age and career factor in too. Guy has already made a ton of money, will likely go on to make a lot more. At this point with 6 SB trips and 4 wins, it's all about legacy.

He also wants to be affordable enough someone will keep him signed for the next 5 years when he will be diminished. I do not think he wants to price himself out of the league in the future.

As much as I hate Brady, I think his wife has 0 to do with his contracts. He wants Super Bowls. He wants to have enough money to buy him talent to throw to/protect him, etc. It's a smart move. It's also the reason he'll do anything he can to stay with the Cheatriots, because they're all about winning/winning big and not much else.

Interested to see Luck's contract. Hopefully he takes a lower potential money for more guaranteed so we can buy some goddamn O-linemen or something to keep him from dying on the field.

Brady's situation is pretty win/win for all parties involved. He doesn't feel obligated to get 20m a year because his wife makes a fucking ton of cash and he's in the perfect situation career wise. He's the prototypical QB for Belichick. If he wanted 20m, the Patriots likely say no and he would have been QB'ing the Raiders to a 4-12 record for the last 6 years.

I am trying to imagine the look on Luck's face when he takes a little less money so they can get some O-line help, and then the team goes out and blows it on defense and skill positions.

Maybe Luck should structure a contract where he makes league minimum, but gets a half million dollar bonus every time he's knocked down in the backfield.

I'd never be paying OBJ QB type of money--and the Giants would be dumb if they do. Take Calvin Johnsons contract-- it is fucking ABSURD, and hes not even remotely close to making the kind of impact he would need to be making to demand that kind of money. He makes as much as most QBs do......its fucking ridiculous the Lions paid him that kind of cash. ODB jr will be wanting that kind of payday.

Its just stupid and franchise killing. You have 100+ million dollars tied up in a guy who doesnt directly affect the outcome of every play and is not even involved in every snap--which is why smart money is going to either the QB himself or the guy getting paid to kill the opposing one--they have the chance to directly affect every snap while on the field. Antonio Brown makes HALF what Calvin does, its fucking hilarious. And that's the most the Steelers will put into a wideout because they know they can find them in later rounds. Wheaton 3rd, Brown 6th, Bryant 4th--if you know wtf you're doing in the draft, you dont go there.
Its easy to talk like this in hindsight. Some of your points hold some level of merit, when it comes it the length and overall amount of money committed to Megatron, but when WR's are catching 90 balls a year and finding the endzone in the low to mid teens year in and year out, and dominating double teams in every city, you have to pay him an overpriced, ridiculous contract in order to keep him.Its not Calvin Johnsons fault he made a ton of money. Blame his agent and the owners. If the Lions dont offer him something stupid, he will simply sign with the next bidder, making the entire argument about shrewd contracts a pointless one.

The only time their is a smart contract as far as team friendly is concerned, is when a guy is coming off an arrest or injury. Other than that you have to overpay to keep your man. Or get your man, either one (ie Eagles with DeMarco Murray). The NFL with contract money is sometimes obviously retarded, but when you catch 100 balls, or rush for 1600 yards, or have a top 2 or 3 season as a cornerback for multiple years in a row, you deserve to get paid. No player is truly paid accurately, there are only guys that are underpaid.

Remember those rookie contracts? Like Sam Bradford's?

Definition of overpaid. Glad they fixed that bullshit.

If OBJ keeps the same pace for the rest of the year he will have -
104 receptions
1600 yards
15 touchdowns

In order for him to catch Jerry Rice he would need
13 more years on receptions
12.5 more years of yards
11 years in touchdowns

Rice played 19 years. If OBJ continues with his current stats he might just be worth QB money. Unfortunately I don't think there is any way he could keep up those numbers year after year. The front office of the Giants just makes too many crappy decisions.

I think that will depend on their post-Eli plans. Eli at least is above average. You dip below that and you get Randy Moss in Oakland, or Joey Galloway on the Cowboys.

A smart GM, without pressure from ownership, would be just fine with this.

Now who knows how many NFL franchises have a front office where that would actually happen.
