Pricing is regressing to its roots.

I never got an NES as a kid, but I did get a Game Boy, and eventually a SNES years after it launched.

I remember a time circa 1993 or so where KB Toys was selling the new top-loader NES with the nice SNES-style controllers for $50. Fifty dollars! And a bunch of NES games were $10 new, including Metroid and Super Mario Bros 3 (probably the two NES games I wanted the most). I begged my mom to get 'em for me, but she didn't because she didn't realize what a deal it was.

It worked out though because like 5 months later I finally got a SNES with Super Mario World and Super Metroid, which is basically the super version of what I tried to get at KB.

Still though, every so often I remember the top-loader NES and the new NES games at KB and wish I'd gotten one. Those top-loaders are so pricey now, and their rounded controllers are the only way I can play NES games on actual hardware and enjoy it. Hate the original controllers.

The top loader is worth a good bit now…it it was

Anyone else remember the commerical for it? What to do with that 49.99 check from grandma for your birthday? Buy a Nintendo!

*stares in Sega* ;)

Sega had the same issue with cart memory cost.

Most all games were 49.99. Phantasy Star was 74.99 because of the huge jump in memory needed. Same with SNES for street fighter 2 turbo. (I worked at software etc at the time when I was a kid) Most SNES and genesis games were 49.99 though.

Then there was Super R-Type. Yours for $9.99 at Wal-mart. I bought that POS because it was all I could afford and hated it. I couldn’t git gud enough.

I remember Breath of Fire 2 being like $80 (so like $150 in current dollars) circa 1996 or so. It's one of the reasons it's the only major American SNES RPG that I never played. Even now, cause every time I try to make some plans to hit it, something else comes up. It'd be a lot easier if I just played it on the Switch, but it's better to play it on emulator because there's apparently a re-translation patch that makes the dialogue actually readable.

Yeah, I got Super R-Type for $10 in 1995 or so, during the early SNES malaise where I couldn't afford any of the games I really wanted, so I just rented things and played things that were bargain bin. Got to play a lot of "weird" games like 7th Saga and Stargate. Well, since Super R-Type was the only new game I had to play for a couple months, I got gud, and somehow beat the game. Playing it again later on, I have no idea how I managed that. Apparently I also beat R-Type III, which has a nearly impossible final boss that I literally couldn't beat as an adult when I tried to replay it even with the help of save states.

Renting was helpful though, was the only way I could play Donkey Kong Country (once I caught it actually in the stores). Heh, just had a flashback to how nobody rented out Game Boy games, and how after I got a Game Boy I was severely let down by this. All the rental stores had NES and SNES, but not Game Boy, and I didn't even realize this until after I had the Game Boy and barely anything to play on it. Not sure why nobody rented out Game Boy games.

The Geiger / Aliens visuals were sweet though

Never liked those games / gradius / lifeforce etc bc i sucked and died- later on emulator with reload state i got through them and enjoyed it much more

This real? Weird that they'd announce everything when the tariffs were a known factor, then a day later go "well wait let's see what effect this has first"

It might surprise you to learn that global announcements are planned months in advance and Trump coming up with new tariffs out of his ass every week makes any kind of organization hard.

It might surprise you to learn that organizations can call audibles. They couldn't call an audible with their announcement? Change the graphics to read "Price TBA" instead of "Price $499". That doesn't take months.

Just questioning the veracity of that tweet. If it's true, it's true. Disappointing if so.

"Nintendo announced its next-generation console on Wednesday, setting the price of Switch 2 at $449.99. A few hours later, U.S. President Donald Trump announced “reciprocal tariffs” on dozens of countries, including territories where Nintendo manufactures its hardware."

Were they supposed to jump in a time machine to fix the graphic?

It's not a narrative shift it's called a timeline. No one feels bad for Nintendo. Fucking moron.

Yeah, the only reason I've not got a deck is I feel like an updated one is due sometime soon at this point.
I bought the original top of the line LCD back not long after they launched, and I skipped the OLED update because at this price point it's just not worth it IMO to buy every revision of something like this. I figure they will release one with updated hardware eventually and that's when I'll get a new one. Honestly if Steam announced a new Steam Deck with more powerful hardware today I think I would buy that over a Switch 2 because I just see myself getting far more use out of that, especially while the Switch 2 is still in it's first year as a new platform. Heck Microsoft's new Xbox handheld has me interested and questioning if I would rather have that over a Switch 2 as well as I can apparently take advantage of all the Xbox games I bought over the years that also work on Windows and those games can be bought relatively cheap these days as well.

I think they said they will release a new Steam Deck when theres a big leap in the small form GPU/CPUs, not sure how fast that is advancing though.

How is the Switch 2 compared to Steam Deck spec wise?
