That looked really cool. A bit sterile, but neat.
One part of the video though. He mentions that when he flew away from the planet, everything that he had done was regenerated.

So still not sure of what the game is other than go to planet, look around find some stuff, move to next, continue that forever. No point in ever going back to something if everything you do is wiped 5 seconds after you leave.

Ah, I misheard him then. I thought he said that it wasn't there once you left, but there again when you came back. Ie, the changes that you had made were saved, just not "loaded" into active memory after you left.

Pretty sure that's exactly what he meant. The universe is loaded little bits at a time, but I think all changes are saved for future use.

I'm not sure there will be a fun game in there, but I'm impressed as hell by the scope of it all.

I think there could be a fun game in there, depends on how deep and interesting the space pirating and combat is. Exploration is cool for a little while, but will get stale, especially with that GODAWFUL runspeed they got going there. They really need to do another half hour video just like that, except focusing on ship to ship combat, pirating, fencing goods, and upgrading your ship for battle. That's really what would suck people in and start the hype machine rolling.

The moment people figure out how to determine their relative location in the universe, I would imagine that they would then congregate in an area where they can actually interact with other players. I know I would certainly do that in between picking random planets to check out.

Since there's a lot of technology research/discovery stuff going on, I would imagine some sort of speed boost is pretty much guaranteed.

I still don't get the point of this. It's a $60 space Minecraft tech demo that you can't even play with your friends, right?

Takes me from vaguely interested to nopetown really quickly without friends.

pretty sure this is a single player game.

even if you did like starbound, and posted your coordinates on reddit. When other players go to "your" planet, they won't see YOU. They probably won't even see the stuff you built.

Gameplay vid there did help improve my feelings on the game. I was leaning towards spore 2.0 pretty heavily.

"when your playground consists of 18 quintillion planets, a single encounter is statistically unlikely"

The devs keep stressing that interactions with other will be minimal. But since everyone is being funneled to the center of the galaxy, you are going to run into other people at some point. Maybe lots of others. The question is: what will the players do then? It will be interesting to see if communities spring up around some kind of "hub" at that central point. It could take the game in whole new directions, unexpected by the devs.

I don't think so.

Exact words in the video

"There are no loading screens, correct?"

"That's right, yeah. Everything you see is being generated. So it is being generated around you live. Now that I have flown away from that planet, everything that you just saw is thrown away. If I fly back down, everything will be regenerated."

Granted English isn't my first language, but that doesn't sound like changes are saved to me.

Sounds to me like Quaid and Rezz are right.

It's a poor choice of words but yea I think the changes are saved. It's strongly implied from previous information they've released or talked about, but who knows. Could be that some changes (naming, claiming, initial layout of planet and species on it) are saved but any deforming or whatever you do isn't saved.

reddit has a thread about this.
early in the vid, when he sleeps at the alter thing. Time shifts from night to day.. that kind of thing can't happen in Multiplayer.

so, maybe there are spacestations which are mp lobbies or something. But otherwise, I am pretty sure its effectively a single player game.

Eh. There's plenty of ways to make that functional in multiplayer. Each system just isn't on a linked day-night cycle. All players present on a planet have to sleep at the same time (ala Minecraft). Stuff like that. I thought they had explicitly said you'd be able to interact with other players if you found them before so unless that's changed, there's some kind of MP. Just not the EVE-Minecraft hybrid some people were hoping for.

Here's a recent interview where he comments on the multiplayer. I, personally, couldn't care less about MP in this game.

I find that really odd because I only care about multiplayer. Same with Minecraft, very little interest in exploring solo indefinitely without any conflict big enough to need multiple people or discoveries worthy of sharing. Especially at the astronomical price this thing has climbed to.

My gaming time is something I do to get away from people. I'm very well aware that multiplayer is huge and there are a few games I play strictly for it, but I'm thankful for the games out there that are still awesome for single player(or use multiplayer in a manner such as Bloodborne/Dark Souls, where it's not the main or required feature). I have no clue if this game will be any good, but I'm interested in the exploration and tech behind the game. I likely won't buy on release, but will if the feedback here is good.

Yea my interest is mostly in the procedural generation but that's like a $10 game interest. Steam sale in a few years I guess.
