Its probably Chinese. They're downright fanatical about protecting "little brother", and they likely want to stick it to Sony since its a Japanese brand.

From theWired article:

"Notably, Phil Reitinger?s name appears in the email thread. Reitinger is a big gun in security, having once served as Deputy Under Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security?s National Protection and Programs Directorate. The NPPD helps protect government civilian systems. Reitinger is also a former Microsoft executive, former director of the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center and, ironically, former deputy chief of the Justice Department?s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section.

He left his DHS job in 2011 to join Sony as its chief information security officer where he?s responsible for overseeing the company?s global security efforts. Last year he was also appointed to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo?s cyber security advisory board."

Best thing they could do is release the movie as a free download/stream, and allow for donations if you want. Bet it would make a killing.

This kind of shit behavior used to get you your shit pushed in;

First Barbary War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Of course Obama being the bitch that he is will just ramble on about redlines and if they hack someone else again he will give another redline ultimatum. NK is a little shit of a nation that should of been handled fucking decades ago instead of this fucking backwards ass appeasement that continually leads to stupid shit like this that just fucks us over and over.

Sony Pictures is the American subsidiary, which is the part that's pretty much dead.

I much prefer this order by Jefferson to the bullshit appeasement of today:

Jefferson ordered naval leaders to "protect our commerce andchastise their insolence-- by sinking, burning or destroying their ships and vessels wherever you shall find them," according to U.S. naval documents.

I do not understand the surprise and rage here. Sony and theater chains are corporations whose only reason for existing is to make money.

If even a couple percent of your normal customer base decides to stay home because they're afraid of the threats, then they lose far more money running the movie than they do censoring it. Its a no brainer. You can bitch about freedom of speech all you want, but these companies know where the money is.

This movie cost $40 million. If it's successful, it can maybe make $120 million. Well, last year around this time, Frozen made over ten times that. So a 10% reduction in customers for that movie alone due to the threats and they're in the red already. And that's just one movie. They have 15 others they need to sell.

Even if running the movie only costs them 2% of their customers, that's a far bigger loss than not running it. This is why even nonviolent vocal censorship campaigns are so effective. You don't need to hit a lot of customers to make something uneconomical. The vocal minority is enough by itself.
