FBI Update on Sony Investigation

As a result of our investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S. government departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that the North Korean government is responsible for these actions.
Another interesting tidbit I didn't know is that they disabled thousands of Sony computers in the attack

These aren't really even hacks if you look at how shit was done. Their network was left completely open and the shit they stole was completely unencrypted. They had all their passwords and SSNs in plaintext excel files.
As someone who works in IT, I can tell you it was far more complex than you think. If their network was wide open they would have been raped by script kiddies using off the shelf hacker tools long ago. The malware used was extremely sophisticated and tailored to Sony's environment.

I can also tell you that keeping a network Sony's size completely secure is impossible. In fact, any large network is inevitably hackable with enough time and effort. Why? Because of end-users stupidity. It's hard enough to get 100 employees to not click on stupid shit, let alone 10,000. Tie this in with a custom zero-day malware and all you've got left on defense is a good DLP system. The majority of these "hacks" aren't out of a scene from Swordfish, but simply social engineering that seeks to target one idiot in your company as a way in. If I want to hack a network, I don't start trying to "hackzors your firewall", I find some poor slob on the cleaning crew of your office that is paid $9 an hour, and offer him $5,000 to plug one oftheseunder the desktop of any user at your company. Approximately 24 hours, or 1gb or so of traffic later, I've got the keys to your company castle. It really is that simple.

Sony has no choice but to cave to the demands. Every single major theater chain announced that they would not show the movie. Why should Sony spend the money to get it out there if >90% of all cinemas in the US aren't going to show it? Your link has ONE theater that wants to show it.
Bullcrap. Not showing the movie means it is a complete loss. Showing it in some theatres (and there are far more than one that want to show it, you see many smaller theatres begging to screen it right now) and seeing that, SHOCKINGLY, NK isn't actually going to do anything, and suddenly they could open it up for wider release.

Instead, they totally cave and will lose everything on this movie, all for cowardice.

A friend of mine who works at Sony said they were told to keep coming to work even though they couldnt do anything with all the computers down. This was during a big storm in LA, he had to drive through 2 hours of traffic to get to work to sit around and not do anything. He was not happy about it.

Sounds like typical large corporation bullshit.

I might be a retard but Xequecal's math is nowhere even remotely close to making any sense to me.

If you pay to make a movie, and pay to advertise it for months, there's absolutely no way you're saving money by not showing it. I don't get it.
I can see how they could estimate losses from other movies if this one was released, if they in fact did determine it would have a negative impact on viewers of their other movies

what are they expecting him to do for 8 or whatever hours? just sit at his desk and stare at a blank computer screen all day?

Pretty much they just hung out all day. According to him at the time they didnt want to make it look like the hackers won, so they wanted everyone to keep coming into work as has to hide how bad the damage was.

Yeah I am really confused on his point as well. How in the world are they losing more money on this movie by releasing it into whatever theaters are willing to show it? I am quite sure they aren't paying the theaters to show the movie, so where does additional loss come from? And let's be honest, at this point with all the media attention, it would more likely be a smash hit that everyone wants to go see what all the fuss is about.

By not showing it you officially lose every penny that was put into it.

At this point I can only assume he's talking about the Theater Chain losing money and not Sony. Otherwise it makes no sense.

This.

its the height of retardation to think NK has some phantom movie army over here watching theaters to make sure some stoner flick isnt being shown. if North Korea has a secret army in america and our own government isnt even aware of it, thats a much larger fucking problem to worry about. obviously there is none because NK is a shithole and anyone who leaves NK never wants anything to do with it again. the idea of any NK kill squad coming over here and still believing all the bullshit they have been told about us and their Dear Leader's superpowers is simply laughable. Sony you got punked and punked hard.

Is it really tough to fathom why a Japanese company decided an American stoner film isnt worth the trouble?

you act like this film snuck up on Sony. they greenlit the film, probably at least a year ago and it never occurred to anyone until now that maybe kim jong un might be pissed that a japanese company produced a film about him being assassinated? give me a fucking break.

Nobody believes that NK has some militant sleeper cell in the US waiting to kick into gear as soon as the movie starts playing. Sony doesn't want it released because they're worried even more embarrassing "racist" emails will be leaked, while the big theater chains don't want to open themselves up to potential litigation no matter how minor the risk.

Best idea I've heard is for Sony to release it for free all over the internet as a big "F-U" to North Korea, but again they won't do so because they know the hackers have a tons of embarrassing/incriminating info that they haven't yet released.

I don't get why this is so hard to understand. If you have a billion dollar movie running at the same time as this, and 3% of your normal customer base that would normally go to the movies but doesn't because they're afraid of terrorists due to the NK threats doesn't go watch it, you lose $30 million. In addition to that, a big theater chain like AMC has 19 more screens at each location. Obviously, they won't be running a billion dollar blockbuster on the rest of the screens, but that 3% loss on each of them adds up. Considering you were only expecting $80 million profit from The Interview in the first place, you lose more money running the movie than you lose by not running it.

Yes, I'm aggregating every theater in the country here with these numbers but I don't think this is far fetched. I personally also think the 3% decline I just pulled out of my ass is much less than it would actually be, and it'll hit them the worst in the customers they want most - families with little kids that buy tons of overpriced concessions. In my experience, parents with small children are fucking terrified of every little possible thing that could go wrong and hurt their kids. This type of fear shit is not rational and spreads quickly. For comparison, whenthis companygot nailed for sending out salmonella-tainted peanut butter, peanut butter sales in the country dropped by a whopping 25%, even though none of the product this company sold ever ended up on grocery store shelves in the first place, and there was literally zero risk to the public.

Okay so to be clear. You are saying you think the movie theaters would stand to lose more money, not Sony? Cause otherwise you still make absolutely no sense.

Well, yes. It's no secret that before Sony shitcanned the movie, every single major movie theater chain publicly stated that they would not show it. Of course Sony has to pull it, at that point. What good would releasing it do when no major theater will screen it? There are costs associated with distributing it, of course. In fact, I'm willing to bet these theater chains put pressure on Sony to cancel it, by threatening not to show further releases from them if the movie wasn't pulled. Like I said, this kind of fear shit is not rational. I'm pretty sure that enough people would worry about theaters showing future Sony releases, after The Interview had already had its run, being attacked and that they would still hesitate to go to the movies. It's not like going to the movies is an essential thing anyone has to do, it's a form of entertainment and there are many alternatives. Many people wouldn't even consciously make the choice to stay away due to the threats, it would just be in the back of their mind as they choose one of their many entertainment options and sway their decision away from the movies.

Off topic but can Wikipedia just put some god damn ads up already and quit begging for money, holy shit the new plea takes up more space then an ad would.
Short Answer: The people that run Wikipedia are corrupt and scamming people for money.

Long Answer:

But what Wikipedia doesn't tell us is that it is awash with cash - and raises far more money each year than it needs to keep operating.

Donations are funding a huge expansion in professional administrative staff and "research projects". Amazingly, this year for the first time Wikipedia - the web encyclopaedia anyone can edit - has even found the cash to fund a lobbyist.
