Honestly i'm not surprised that there will be a 10gb model first. We're in this weird period where 4k is inching closer to the standard but its not quite there yet. Most people still use 1080p or 1440p. 1440p @ 144hz is still the sweet spot imo since getting ~150fps on 4k resolution takes a very powerful system.

If you're running 1440p in 2020 and you buy a $1k GPU then you're a dumb American Inventor.

I'm confused on the power connector thing. SO if you buy founders edition you get the 12 pin connector but all the other cards are going to have 2-3 8 pin connectors. Is there going to be some significant changes to non nvidia cards to the point they have to draw so much more power or is the 12 pin some nvidia only tech?

I'm guessing the 12 pin is drawing more amps through less pins? The 12 pin is definitely real since the Seasonic PSU adapter cable has already leaked.

Not an electrical engineer but if I ever lose my job I'm definitely going back to school for that.

I want to push 144 fps minimum at 1440p. Are you saying that the 3070 should be able to do this without issue given a 3700X (or its 4000 equivalent)? Because after that we're talking the $800 MSRP card.

It would take 4k + really big textures + a bunch of extra effects to hit 10gb.

If the 3080 is really a 320W+ card, I just don't see the fucking point of it. Anyone that can build around that much power consumption + heat is just going to buy the 3090 at thirty more watts and not give a shit about the extra 600 dollars because this is clearly their main hobby.

They really should have kept the 3080 under 275W, so you could still put one in a "normal" case with a "normal" power supply.

People aren't generally looking at power consumption and heat 1st 2nd or 3rd. Price and performance is probably the number one and two reasons for a purchase. Plus 600 bucks is a lot of money, especially when you can dish out 800 bucks and get amazing performance on the second tier card.

Yeah but that 800 bucks is now 1050 bucks if you have to go buy a 850W PSU right now.

I double checked tonight because haven’t looked since the build, apparently I have a Seasonic 750W. Need to launch something and see what I’m pulling with the 980TI currently.

I dont think i hit the 11GB on my 2080ti - I am unsure what games would even hit the 10GB on some of the future cards.
I think you severely underestimate what uses grapchics card memory nowadays. I have an 8 GB 2070. Guess which game I'm currently playing:

None. It's Firefox mostly.

Unless you're a 19 year old ultra-competitive/pro gamer, you aren't getting anything out of FPS past 90-100ish. It's very unlikely your eyes would even be able to pick up the difference.

You're entitled to your opinion and all, but I put the people chasing ultra-high fps into the same category that I put the autistics that are buying $2000 DACs because they think it makes their MP3s sound better. There's some very marginal benefit to FPS for precision shooters and such up through about 120fps but beyond that you're paying for snake oil and the "gains" you're seeing are total placebo effect.

I just want to play Cyberpunk 2077 without it running like ass.

Which I'm pretty sure it's going to on my 1060.

Nah man. I absolutely can tell. That frame rate is too low not to notice. If you were to say something like 165FPS vs 180FPS, I would say you might have a point.

I have a 144hz monitor and I want to make sure the fps doesn't fall below the refresh rate as often as possible. So again, what card will do that?

I would suggest 3 3090s in SLI for ultimate frame drop protection.

I cannot tell the difference between 120hz and 144hz or 165hz, and almost always set my monitors to 120hz with 117fps cap and am perfectly fine with it.
