Fuck I hate sharpton, he is pretty much calling for affirmative action in hollywood. I can think of an black actor or director that should have been nominated over the others

We go to the movies at least once a week (sometimes more than once if catching a midnight sci-fi/horror classic at one of the indy theaters here in Beantown) and yet I've only seen the Imitation Game from the list of Best Picture.

A movie is eligible to be nominated so long as at least 75% of it is animated.Wall-Ewon in the category, for instance, despite the fact that it had somelive action scenes.

RULE SEVEN
SPECIAL RULES FOR THE
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM AWARD

I. DEFINITION
An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of more than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters' performances are created using a frame by frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture's running time.

Pretty meh year imo. Some good films but nothing really stands out as something I'm going to remember in a couple of years time.
Yet to see Birdman though, so maybe that will change my mind.

Lego movie I'll probably remember for a while.

I finally got around to watching Boyhood today, and I don't understand the nominations for Marquette and Hawke. It was a really well done coming of age movie with a fantastic gimmick, but none of the acting was Oscar worthy.

And yeah, the only reason I came into this thread was because I saw there was an outcry that there weren't any black nominees. Maybe start making better movies and you'll get nominated (they're also apparently ignoring the Best Picture nom for Selma). The woman who directed Selma was on the LA news talking about how the Academy missed an opportunity to get more movies made about black culture or something. So yeah, affirmative action.

Or just cast Idris Elba in a ton more things since he's pretty damn badass without having to make pictures / shows about being black.

12 Years a Slave deservedly won last year, with a nomination for best actor, a win for best actress a nomination for best director and a win for best adaptation. I'll go ahead a suspect Selma is not as good, but it's true that the lead actor is supposed to do a great job. Maybe Sharpton wanted a nomination for Antoine Fuqua's The Equalizer?

It's true though that diversity is not that high in Hollywood, be it in front or behind the camera. I was checking through the list of american movies I saw this year and I was hard pressed to find one with a latino, asian or afro-american actor or actress in one of the main parts. Desplechin's Jimmy P. has Del Toro as lead (and an acting nomination would not have been scandalous) but it's a french film I believe, Hercules has The Rock (pacific islander), 47 Ronin has a lot of japanese actors painstakingly trying to speak in english, Step Up All In has a multi-ethnic cast but all the main characters are caucasians... meh.

black struggles films are old hat. they pull that shit at least once a year and expect people to fall over and weep from all the white guilt we have. The Lego film being absent from best animated film is a big wtf. i hope Budapest wins best pic, although nightcrawler should have been close competition.

I want Steve Carell to win best actor and Mark Ruffalo to win best supporting. I know a lot of people may not have enjoyed the movie "Foxcatcher" because it was slow, but the acting in it was damn good.

Go over this every year. They don't watch the animated movies. They pick based on names pretty much.

Is it from Pixar? +5
Is it from Disney? +3
Is it from Japan? +2
sounds foreign? must be good +2

So Al Sharpton is declaring a State of Emergency or something because all the actors and directors nominated are white. I can't think of any particular great performance that was snubbed however.

Lego Movie not being nominated is a real puzzle. Given that I never even heard of two of the animated films not having the top grossing animated film of the year make the list seems bizarre. Did it get disqualified because it has a couple of live action parts?
Selma barely got nominated. So much angst. LOLZ.

I'm sure it was purely because of technicalities on the part of "The Academy" or whatever, but man am I glad they didn't full bore the historical fiction MLK movie. Releasing that movie so near to the awards is such a cynical bit of business.

That movie should obviously have had a febuary release date.

Just started watching Whiplash.

JK Simmons as a music instructor is more terrifying than a white supremacist in OZ.

Finished it. Whiplash is fuckin' intense.

So far the Bisi rankings are:
1. Whiplash
2. Birdman
3. The Imitation Game

Still left to go: Boyhood, Selma, The Theory of Everything, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and American Sniper.

Wish Inherent Vice got some more love, but it's out there so I understand that and I haven't seen many of the other nominated movies.

Lego movie though, not sure I'll ever understand that snub, wow.

Inherent vice had good acting that about it. lots of it seemed messy and was way to long. The more I think about boyhood I have no problem with all of its nominations, the movie does hit cords insanely well with how it is growing up and the fact that they spent 12 years making it is pretty amazing
