Personally I think they missed a big opportunity to do shorts which highlight the origins of the people. Winston's would have been more powerful if it had a summary of his growing up, human Winston's influence on him, and finally the tragedy+escape from the moonbase.

This is part of the reason I have always felt this game was sloppy seconds. I'm betting when this was an MMO, there was a ton of background stuff done/planned. When they gutted all the of the setting/story/quests we're left with a hollow shell that had a ton of potential but ultimately the delivery fell flat. The Quesalupa of FPS games.

yeah, I was expecting more of a "who is Widowmaker". I thought winstons did give a good rundown of who he was.
also, looking at the actual background of Widowmaker.. super problematic. how is no one complaining about this, and only Tracers butt?

So.. she was the wife of an Overwatch agent. Was kidnapped, raped, tortured and brainwashed. Had her mind reprogrammed. Was sent home as a sleeper agent for Talon. Kills her husband. then, returns to the people that brainwashed her, to become a supersoldier for them..

People complaining abut Tracer being sexy. While "widow is supposed to be, so its ok". uh.. no its not. Its actually way fucking worse, when you release shes only dressing sexy because she has been programmed to by Talon. (who is totally going to be a man I assume)

Pretty sure the root of the argument was that the 'sexy' pose didn't suit Tracer's character. That's why you aren't seeing issues with Widowmaker.
I don't understand the argument myself. Just because a woman has x y or z character traits doesn't exclude her from taking joy in or leveraging her sexuality. But I'm just some internet misogynist, so what do I know?

Well we do know this was an MMO and so there should exist all this backstory, they are just trying to find the best way to get it out to people while also moving the narrative forward. This is doubly hard because the game itself is nothing at all about story given that you can have multiple copies of any character on either team. In THAT context even having a backstory is actually somewhat irrelevant to the game. Team Fortress 2 managed to do this, however, so there is hope.
The way I see it is that they're characters and not real people. Sure, a person is multilayered and can be prude or sexy or neither at various times. But Overwatch characters are defined by how they look, their in-game skillset, a limited number of lines, and a paragraph of backstory. I'm sure Blizzard wrote much larger back stories, but as they stand, they're one-dimensional. And maybe that pose is is supposed to show that side of her character, but with Widowmaker type-cast as the femme-fatale, I can see the argument that it's 'out of character'.

I liked both videos but I appreciated the additional story telling and backstory of the Winston one. This one was almost all action focused and I don't really feel like I got a better understanding of Tracer or WM afterwards.
Also someone pointed out in the reddit thread a really cool touch and that is the picture of the monk with candles around it at the hotel he was shot in King's Row. I've seen the picture and always wondered why the hell Zenyatta pic was there but now it makes more sense.

Another post pointed out that this Video takes place the same day as the Winston video. All of these clips might be forming one long narrative. Would be neat to watch them all back-to-back. Recall was 7.5 mins, Alive is 6 mins. With 21 heroes that's over 2 hours of video easily.

I think Blizzard said they have 3 more coming after Alive prior to release. Not sure if they'll keep up with the shorts post-launch. But it is some of the best pub they can do for the game. At least the videos are getting heavily watched and shared.
I'm excited to see more characters than the 4 they've already shown from the cinematic trailer. Their animation is so good.
Man, I love all these videos. Hoping Overwatch becomes a big IP for them so they can make more.
