Yeah it's likely shove voles. You can relocate them into an obsidian box with a steel door if you don't want to kill them. They are a good source of meat if you ranch them.

Since you've ruled out meteors another source of entombing in space can be rocket heat exhaust cooking debris. For example a dupe carrying algae into the rocket, gets distracted by downtime, drops the algae somewhere near a rocket. When the rocket takes off the exhaust cooks the algae->dirt->sand which can turn into a tile and entomb things.

I landed on my first asteroid, the water asteroid, with the intent to get graphite or whatever to make super coolant.

It is not going well.

so. now you've played this, what are your thoughts on it, compared to Factorio?

I vastly prefer this, as well as, rimworld, etc. where I don't have direct control, and are instead giving orders to, and keeping the npcs alive. Feels like there is more purpose.
The secondary factor is the death spirals. germs causing sickness, sickness causing crops to rot on the vine, causing starvation, etc. things like that. when something goes wrong, it typically gets harder to fix, due to the problems it causes. dupes dying from your mistakes or poor planning.

This is Dwarf Fortress in the Terraria engine with physics.

Factorio is a really complicated RTS, it's a different genre despite superficial similarities like going into space for resources.

I'm still learning but my current thoughts can be seen in the below video, just replace "Democracy" with "Oni" and "people" with "dupes".

I've got my rocket headed to "udderinin" to pick up some gassy moos.

I started farming slicksters

Now that I've got super coolant I'm going to try to make sulfur / petrol out of magma + crude oil.

I've never used those rocket modules before, when I want to relocate critters to other planets I carry them in the spacefarer module. This is a lot easier to do now since they added the 'relocate' feature.

In Vietnam once I saw a dude with a medium sized pig on the back of his motorbike.
Kind of like this, although from memory it wasn't on its side. Was a long time ago though:

I've got my master plan to conquer Magmolin. I'm going to create a steam room and use steam generators to cool off a tunnel.

Of any long-released game I've ever played, Oni is by far the most focused on either avoiding, or exploiting arguably dumb game mechanics.

In this case, I can't build a structure ABOVE the ground level of the asteroid because my liquid disappears. So I'll just pump the lava out of the surface and cause it to disappear... This kiiiinda makes sense if the world is actually 3d, and the magma is just rolling beyond the 2d plane the player has access to. *shrug*

I'm getting this stream of igneous rock poopin' out as my supercooled liquid cools it off and then gets cooled off by the 3x steam gen.

Yeah you'll have to make the drywall out of obsidian to stop it being melted by the magma.

There are much easier ways of getting down to the niobium but your way definitely does the job.
