That was pretty cool.

130k polygons. When I reduce the mesh to 75k polygons it looks like a ball of clay.

While cool as fuck, serves no purpose for the common consumer PC. Main reason why realism never works, details cost performance.

So we have balls of clay running around.

I don't like the character model. I hate realistic looking character models; they look so bad and the graphics eventually don't age well. The guy looks like your average Joe; makes me feel I'm playing Second Life or the Sims and not a Fantasy MMORPG. I loved EQ because it wasn't cartoony yet it wasn't realistic; characters did feel they belong in a fantasy world.
Well it is a human so they are supposed to look like that unless you stylise them slightly but then they look like dolls or something. Can't really win with a human. But the quality of it is amazing and if you imagine Trolls, Ogres, Dark Elves, etc. with that quality, it is gonna look sweet.

I despised the raid part about EQ. To this day I don't understand why/how people enjoy doing raids (apart from the loot) raiding on itself in EQ was a torture for me. If people loved the progress of overcoming difficult encounters you can do the same in a smaller group scale; the difference it would be way more fun and you don't feel like you're a waste of space. What I'm looking for in Pantheon is 80% group content; Raids can be enjoyed but only as a small part of the experience unlike how EQ developed during SoL, PoP and Gates of Discord.
I'm with ya, I hate raiding. I read or heard Brad somewhere talking about how Pantheon will be almost entirely group content with just a small bit of raiding. I think it was in a Q&A or something. I got the impression that the game will be more like 99% group/solo content and 1% raids. Hope so anyway.

Fable defintiely has a good stylized "realism", same with Dishonored. I think Dishonored might be my favorite.
You can defend the graphics all you want but if they stick with that janky ass animation in a game focused around combat it's gonna bomb aside from the 17 supporters they have

There are lots of games with great graphics and great art styles, but they are all huge budget games and they all have shitty gameplay. I don't think you can have both, it just isn't possible. Part of the problem is that the amount of money it costs to make beautiful games means there is never enough left over for the gameplay. And another part of the problem is that when they are spending that much money, nobody is willing to risk it not being bought by millions of people to recover the costs, and to satisfy millions of people you can't have challenge or depth and they wont risk trying new ideas either.

Basically be careful what you wish for. People have always wanted better graphics and that's what ruined the games industry in the first place. The whole point of Pantheon and all crowd funded games is that they are being designed for a niche audience who value gameplay over anything else. I would like better animations too but not if takes time and money away from more spells or more dungeons or something I am far more interested in. I can still enjoy EQ today and that has extremely crappy animations.

everyone wants it, but it just simply isnt possible.

so people have to embrace the americanized anime or the asian anime styles.

id rather have shitty eq models, but im prolly autistic. everyone who touches eqbrowser that has never played eq ALWAYS says the graphics look so fucking bad its unplayable.

That is more to do with the age of the person. I can still play Syndicate, System Shock, or Total Annihilation and not even think twice about the graphics.

More than anything, old games' UIs are what annoy me the most. We've come a long ways in quality of life features in user interfaces.

I can still remember when HL1 came out. I can still recall when the original XCOM : UFO Defence (not Defense) came out.

I can still play them but god damn it do they shitty graphics. KOTOR II has shitty graphics. They're fun to play, but their graphics aren't one of their selling points. And yes, I'm noticing them every single fucking time I boot up one of these games.

Errr, yes. The difference is that I grew up with Manic Miner so System Shock still looks slick to me even now. You grew up with HL1 so HL1 looks shitty.

Okay, well, that's fine. We can get into a pissing contest about who the fuck is older, when all it really comes down to is a matter of taste. I don't really like games that are played at 640 x 480 with sprites and the newer machines cause them to run at 1,000%-4,000% of speed. So badly, in fact, that you have to run DOSBox and the actual game, and even then it might only work about 50% of the time.

Or are you gonna be dogmatic about this too, you little shit?

New model looks great. It fits the realistic look of the world. You can't just drop stylized characters into a game world that was created to be mostly realistic. It won't mesh.

The real challenge is getting all the animations looking natural and flowing. Also offering variety in character creation. I think if they manage real flexibility in the character creator, it could become a big selling point. Short people, fat people, skinny people. Players want a character that is unique that they can become attached to.

I don't think it's bad to talk about the art. Brad was looking for feedback on the topic. I just wouldn't get too worked over it yet. Models will get better.

For me, graphics are the least of my concern.
Pantheon is the only MMO I'm looking forward to even if graphics were shit and they new model is undoubtedly an improvement.

I'm old as fuck, almost 50, been a gamer for 40 years. I hate shitty graphics. However, it's more about the artistic style than polycount most of the time.

Vanguard SoH had computer melting graphic specs, with polys and shaders and shadows and whatever, but to my eyes it looked like shit mostly. Also the updated EQ character models, another good example. The new models were higher everything, but the artist completely ruined the style. They were hideous, stood is awkward unrealistic poses, sat like some kind of Japanese fuckbots or something, just completely ruined.

Sure the original EQ models looked archaic, but the art style was much, much better. Anyway, highly stylized, almost-cell-shaded-looking-that-runs-on-a-toaster is better than ugly, high res in my opinion. Of course beautiful art and high-res is the ultimate, but then you begin to run into performance issues.

Best is to have a highly stylized art which can be heavily modified via ingame video options. Then you run into development costs of hiring best artists and using Dev time for implementing various levels of graphical fidelity and the UI to support it.
