My groups mostly lvl 40s now and have done most of the content, as we are on one of the smallest servers and have had pretty much everything to ourselves. My assessment -

- this game is a scam, though not as much as I had initially thought before I played it. What they’ve done, with the amount of time they’ve had, is unforgivably minimal, it actually boggles the mind. I’d have to give them extreme benefit of the doubt that they basically went back to the drawing board as recently as one or two years ago. The only reason it works at all is because of how slow it is to level up or do anything. It is unlikely this will ever be released in a finished state, and none of the updates are promising that they have any good future ahead of them. The pace of gameplay and progress is slow enough that people can enjoy what is there for many months atleast . You will get your moneys worth out of paying for the EA price but anyone who pays anymore any more than that or more going forward is going to get scammed .

- some classes are fun and show elements of being well designed. Others are not and can maybe be excused as due to it being early access, so only time will tell. Everything is extremely feature incomplete class wise.

- world is not nearly as interesting as ever quest. The verticality and climbing has promise but there are not nearly enough points of interest. They could easily spend a year just making silent plains interesting .

-Content at 30+ is basically nonexistent. We grinned feralings for weeks to get xp, was mind numbing, and they dropped copper only and lvl 1 gear, even tho they are lvl 35+. This is excusable as its early access

-the itemization guy is a standout. Some really nifty chase items and creativity in itemization that is sorely lacking in other mmos. (This only applies up into the level 20s range)

- encounter design is old school, in mostly a good way. Major fights are slow and endurance based. Fights can definitely be cheesed and mechanics are janky as balls, but it’s not as important in a game like this as it would be for something like wow or ffxiv.

- they captured sense of fear from eq pretty perfectly. Getting afro can be terrifying , and while frustrating it’s definitely immersive. Overall I think it’s a good thing, even though it sucks, if that makes sense. I care a lot more about what I’m doing on my character than in other mmos I’ve played in a long time. Exploration mostly needs a group for this reason.

- Halnirs is overall great, if buggy. Whoever designed this should do all their major dungeons.

tldr - despite all the positives, unless they really did most of their work in the past year, this shit is a scam that’s never going to finish, because 10+ years of dev time is nowhere near justifying what they have. It’s amazing to me no one else has really tried to capitalize on the fun elements of non instancing (I’m not on a shart server, hopefully they boot that shit once they have more content), grouping , slow travel times , and slowed down combat that this game offers because they seem like low hanging fruit that a lot of old school mmo players would be drawn to.
It 100% doesn't have ten years of dev time in the current game. That gets repeated but anyone who has followed the game know that's not really true in a meaningful way. I mean, pretty much everything up to Brad's death is gone or reworked. They've also rebooted major systems repeatedly. It's probably not unfair to say, though, that it has at least 3-4 years of real dev time on the current product.

Yes, let's just hand wave away 6-7 years of wasted time, money, and resources.....

Dev time for current game is 3.5 years. They had to reboot because the previous version with realistic graphics could not run on Unity with any large amount of people. Had to scrap, rebuild from the ground up, kept the concepts and designs they could. I quit playing when that happened. Lost hope. The current version of this game boggles my mind that they rebounded so well. I'm back and loving it. It's going to be a slow burn of adding content and fine-tuning classes. This feels like an old school alpha test. But one with some seriously good bones to build on. It's years away though imo. But, I do have optimism again that it might eventually get finished. Play the game up to 20-25 range. Make a bunch of alts. They are just now really putting in 25-35 content in any form.

Stop pretending it's only been 10 years we passed that shit by a couple years ago.

Let's revisit the Kickstarter for you revisionist retard faggots. Which failed almost 11 years ago on February 22 2014

Remember they wanted to scam your balls from day one. Look at these stretch goals... oh and then they went on to instead cut out the middle man and directly stretch your assholes by making you give them the money directly. Which most of it went up Brads nose before he died.

Well....they suck at scamming. They made a fun game that feels like EQ1 and is already well worth $40 in a half completed state.

I remember Brad making overtures and pleading for angel investors on the forums and threatening to shut the project down unless they got one. I guess it worked.

There was one account of a trust funder lining up with Brad early on in development.

I agree. I got more out of this game than I did from New World. That game was boring as shit 20 minutes into it

It's not about hand waving away but being honest about the fact that what you see in the game is not 10 years of work. I played it for free and I didn't like it and the memes were fun but I don't pretend something like the fuzzy troll era should be equated with the current team. How many people that are working on it now were working on it 5 years ago, especially in any actual game development capacity? If you actually like the game then that seems relevant to judge their progress by, not the first day of the Kickstarter.

However, I still think even if you take this as 3 to 5 years of development time it's woefully lacking. If they actually try to release this in two years time they are not going to have enough content.

Looking for funding doesn't equal dev time with a full studio, no matter how many times you try to spin it that way

So, i am not like super duper Soxcast level proooppaaanntheeonnn

What is better, a mmorpg dev co that took 8 years to get an alpha beta tango going that employed , lets say, 25 people with decent salaries etc over the time. Funded by companies, private firms and fleeced out kickstarter willing MMOsimps

Or 8 years of gay Nigerian basket weaving USAID taxpayer money paying millions to some “fund” that employees like 5 children of some upper up family cycle washing tax payer embezzled money.

wouldnt be surprised if "USAIDS" went into a lot of MMOs to ruin them

It's been 5 years since the date we were given for the refactor call fwiw (Jan 2020). I don't know how to fairly evaluate "dev time" though at all. I think it's fair to say that if you look at the original start date, it's been an insanely long time. If you look at a date in which they mostly started on the current version of the game it's a bit more reasonable of a timeline.

What matters though in an online discussion? A fan being upset at the completion level of the game vs the KS announcement they started following 11 years ago? The guy looking at when development of the current foundation started 5 years ago? Or do you start considering when they were really able to staff up on some key roles and generating a bunch more manhours due to investment funding? What about the person who just discovered it on Steam? /shrug

I do know that most of this stuff though doesn't matter at this point. What matters now honestly is what they do while in EA and how well that lands with a sufficient amount of customers.

Well....they suck at scamming. They made a fun game that feels like EQ1 and is already well worth $40 in a half completed state.

I agree. Purely evaluating on a entertainment $$/hour cost, it's probably a good buy for most gamers. I mean, you can drop a ton more than $40 just going out to dinner.

This was the first time I played an MMORPG since the first couple years of WoW and I had fun. I will pop back on here and there to try out a new class or level some more and check out more content as its released. Happy to have tossed the devs a $40 bill and hope they can use it to get it further along. There's so many old, bitter gamers now that would rather troll video game threads than actually play video games. Sad!
