It's been 5 years since the date we were given for the refactor call fwiw (Jan 2020). I don't know how to fairly evaluate "dev time" though at all. I think it's fair to say that if you look at the original start date, it's been an insanely long time. If you look at a date in which they mostly started on the current version of the game it's a bit more reasonable of a timeline.

What matters though in an online discussion? A fan being upset at the completion level of the game vs the KS announcement they started following 11 years ago? The guy looking at when development of the current foundation started 5 years ago? Or do you start considering when they were really able to staff up on some key roles and generating a bunch more manhours due to investment funding? What about the person who just discovered it on Steam? /shrug

I do know that most of this stuff though doesn't matter at this point. What matters now honestly is what they do while in EA and how well that lands with a sufficient amount of customers.

I agree. Purely evaluating on a entertainment $$/hour cost, it's probably a good buy for most gamers. I mean, you can drop a ton more than $40 just going out to dinner.
The rest of your post is fine but comparing this to a dinner is silly. You should compare it to other video games and particularly other MMOs since that's the actual competition.

This game still hasn't surpassed the user base of an emu server for a 26 year old game? Big oooooof.

It won't be enough to get them to release, but yes.

Based on what? Please elaborate.

$4mil in revenue seems like a good amount. That would be enough to hire 12 employees at $150k per year for two years…

And that’s assuming no additional EA income at all.

It would take a hell of a lot more than just 12 more people to get this hot mess to a final product in 2 years. Or 5 years, honestly. It *might* be enough to keep the server gerbils running for the next 10+ years.

They are doing good work. Very very glacially slowly. They are taking unforced errors and detours like PVP instead of getting the core game finished and getting the miles of bugs and polishing taken care of.

What’s your experience in the field?

Where are you getting 100K from?

Somewhere between 71k and 104k. Not sure what the number was at before 12/14 so we could guesstimate how much was actually brought in since EA started. If they did get $4m total, remove Valve's 30% that leaves 2.8m before taxes. No idea what their payroll looks like, but servers are never free. Unless they are freeballing it and using unsupported hardware and software, which any investor worth their salt would have noped out on a loooooooong fucking time ago, they have licenses and support contracts with someone. Those I do know about, and you are looking at 50-250k a year easily on a couple servers. They may have their own data center, or they may be renting rack space somewhere, but enterprise grade internet connections and electricity are also not free.

I may not know the programming side of making an MMORPG, but I have a couple decades of experience with servers and contracts and telecomm.

They're funded so it would be a question of enough to pay back investors
You repeat this all the time, but for that to be a meaningful statement it has to be constrained by some time or content metric. It's not infinite funding, right? I don't think they're ever really defined what "done" is, at least in a way that's been unchanging. If they hire more people or increase or decrease planned content, doesn't that have to change the extent to which the funding will take them? The early access page says two years but with plenty of caveats.

If all they've said is that it's fully funded until completion then that's entirely meaningless because that could be redefined however you want. I'm not trying to bust your balls but I think you're thinking uncritically about it.

So they are on track to finish and are able to pay everyone until then...

I feel like you didn't even read what I wrote.

What is finished? Define finished in terms of what the game will have available. Have they done that?

Didn't they already reduce the world size they had planned for release? They could just do that again and say oh that's now our finish point. Are they keeping the team the same size? If not, that would surely affect the length of their funding.

I said on track to being finished and I got 40$ worth already (donated 350 way back)

I recommend anyone else trying it if you haven't yet
