I'm with gogojira here. I just kind of expected that Elidroth was in with Brad when this all went down. Timing and all based on his Hoss posts. I'd be sursprised if they are not actually working together. The plan was to pitch the idea to Smed. It sounds like they did.. Just don't know what came from it. At this point it's looking like very little.

Elidroth is a friend of Brad's and has been even before he was in the industry. It makes sense that they would chat.

Did you just meh me? Now we have to e-fight.

I guess I should have elaborated. When Elidroth on HOSS mentioned a hardcore MMO pitch to Smed a month or two back, I put way too time confirming this dude is actually linked to EQ1 and is the actual Elidroth. You're right though, it's definitely assumptions but I guess I got a bit carried away putting the pieces together.

I still believe it's true. They were working on the same game, both talking about a hardcore, niche MMO that appeals to old school fans and created on a lean budget. Brad recently tweeted that they are exploring tech and funding options and now this guy references a Kickstarter in a few weeks. However, I should have noted that it's guesswork on my part.
No, that's fine. Honestly I have no idea who Elidroth is and if there was a legitimate connection. Obviously is conjecture at this point, but its certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

More importantly someone make him swear to not invalidate all existing content every other content patch or expansion like all recent games do. Would be a total dealbreaker.

Yea, We really need to get back to smaller upgrades. That was another awesome part about EQ.

Everquest did pull it off for a while. Mostly becazse it didnt instance i admit. Limited supply increased the value of "second-best in slot" substantially. Anyway the idea is to have linear advancement instead of exponential, and in addition to that slower advancement having enough unique and interesting items besides the +gooder both combat-related and gimmicks like mounts, minis and the like. No instancing would also help, but not everyone likes to compete for pve (i do, racing for spawns was fun). Severe bottlenecking can be avoided without instancing everything. A little bottlenecking doesnt hurt.

Even the die-hards that still raid in EQ to this day get upset when a new expansion (like the one that literally just came out) doesn't have upgrades.

People want their treadmill. /shrug. EQ's treadmill is still, generally speaking, better than say, WoW, where you get exponentially better during one expansion's content patches.

I don't think we'll get EQ-like equipment though, which I really wish we would. Simply because I hate spending the entire time leveling constantly replacing any and all gear. I understand there's downsides to that too, but I think there's a better solution than throwaway gear every 5 levels.

I don't think it was the end of the world to let us equip our alts with our good gear, hell even raid gear so we could level our alts quicker. It was FUN! Who didn't have a great time smoking through the same content that whopped our ass a hundred times when we were newbies? Who the hell decided we shouldn't be able to do that? Discouraging alts is the dumbest idea. Not only does it populate the newbie zones again, but it populates them with veteran players who can help true newbies with money, tips, and corpse runs! It also keeps the lower levels zones constantly alive with players. Not a bad deal for a dev either. If you spend 6-8 months creating zones, doesn't it benefit them to keep players in those zones more than 2-6 hours?

Holy fuck I hated Elidroth aka speed bump, was funny hearing him bitch on a nightly basis about how he was the #2 tank and when our #1 tank died, no one fucking healed him and immediately started healing the 3rd tank. I remember a night in Ssra when it was on farm and waiting for elidroth to get charmed so I could MB him and I made sure that I had every fucking ounce of mana available for it.

We have convicted murderers teaching at Ivy league schools.
Brad can come to the press release with a dead hooker hand cuffed to him if he releases anything as epic as the classic EQ trilogy.... with VG's infamy system expanded a little.

I would like some clarification on his vision? and what his intentions are. I wonder how much of what has been discussed in this thread is simply our wishful thinking. Pre-beta Vanguard was as close as we could hope for. However as we all know, he took a giant motherfucking meat cleaver to it all and what was released was some sort of bastardized, half-baked, watered down crap fest. And the sad part is, it was still more fun than EQ2 or WOW or any other shithole of a game that's out there today.

We can only speculate.. Who knows how his vision has evolved. He knows what type of game I'm looking for and basically said I'll be very happy.. We should know more soon.

I'm not concerned with his vision because I think his limited comments are telling. I just want the project to come together and be successful which is the hard part foranygame. Naturally people are going to question or disagree with some of the calls, but ultimately it's going to be an MMO that attempts to draw in two crowds: the "I want old school EQ crowd" and the "Dark Souls MMO" crowd. There's overlap in those two; not in gameplay but in what people's wants and expectations are when they say they want those two products.

If those crowds respond well to his vision, the inevitable Kickstarter will get funded with a quality pitch.
