You should know the number one red flag for forum tranniness is repeatedly claiming to be a woman unbidden and as not part of any relevant context. Just letting you know.

Posting this copy and paste from an aussie forum (I am from Australia) from the thread I started on friday over there. Just posting it to show we are not alone

"I think Brad's on the right track here. MMOs have become more and more "dumbed" down over the years in an attempt to capture as many subscriptions as possible. Once that reached it's climax then free to play (FTP) opened up the market to all those who didn't want to subscribe and so the micro transaction system had to be introduced to cover the loss of subscriptions.

Amongst many of the MMO players I've had the pleasure to group and play with over the years (and this being mostly EQ) many have bemoaned the demise of the challenge in the game. The gradual whittling away of death penalties, travel restrictions and increasing time sinks and grinds now make all games pretty much cookie cutter exercises. One MMO is much the same as another.

If Pantheon can bring back gaming for a "hardcore" market and there certainly seems to be a niche for it then perhaps Brad can give us that great early EQ experience now with the added benefit of all the experience (failures/successes, good and bad) that he's had over the years.

I don't want Pantheon to be a free to play. That just panders to people that aren't really committed to the game. I'm happy to vote with my wallet and subscribe to a good game. It supports the developers directly and helps them create the content and mechanics that I want in a niche MMO for players wanting a much more difficult, but rewarding experience.

Does that niche market exist? I say yes. There has been enough time now for FTP to settle in and in a sense it creates its own niche, albeit one of the lowest common denominator. I believe Pantheon will succeed. It offers to those that have long desired a more challenging, interesting and rewarding gaming experience the chance to once again play the game that was lost so long ago.

EQ wasn't called "Evercrack" for no reason. If Brad can deliver that again with new graphics and gameplay then it will be a winner for all those hardcore players depressed by the current state of the MMO market. I believe Brad can deliver and that's why I've pledged the level that gets me into alpha test. I want to help make it a great game."

I'm posting it solely to demonstrate that beyond this forum and the others you guys may frequent, there are others who lurk in the world who share similar opinions...some of us in Australia

My penis and lack of football knowledge say otherwise.

I really want to know how they plan to build an MMO for 800k. If they only get 800k, what kind of product can we expect? I'm suspicious, but in for $100 anyway because there's a 0.1% chance we'll get something amazing.

Do some research, he's answered that question. I think its on the kickstarter page. This is just to show there is a Niche for the type of game he wants.

jesus titty fucking christ. $200 million american dollars for SWTOR? how did they fuck that game up so bad when the damn game cost more to make than all three of the original movies combined?
The problem probably was there was TOO much money involved. The nice thing about an indie project like Pantheon is the constraints of cash can breed creativity. When your budget is unlimited, it opens the door to waste, neglect, and scope creep.

Something about that lower guild tier selling 0 so far needs to be done. Maybe something as simple as change it to alpha access. Reasoning behind that is someone buying it for his guild solo , or 10 folks getting organized enough to do it together are going to want the alpha access and not beta.
This is a really good point. Someone should have snapped that up by now. Maybe Alpha access and perhaps even webhosting for their guild forums would help make a difference.

When I woke up this morning, there were 218 new comments. They should have someone reading that comments thread constantly, but honestly, I don't see how they'd keep up with all that.
the comment thread is really impossible to read. 9 out of 10 comments can't even be answered. If you want to sit down and read all that and filter out the few valid questions, more power to you. But you can read "omg fippy darkpaw train to zone" so often before oyu snap.

Yeah, that's a really fair point. Here's one of the better comments I saw. One poster asked VR to:

Give a real history lesson about the genre and why this type of game is important. There are alot of new younger gamers that don't understand the significance or know the roots of why mmorpgs exist in the first place. Well its time to tell them and show them.
To which I replied:

@Maquiame: +1 to that idea. Ben, Corey, Vus, whoever else, make sure Brad sees what Maquiame wrote. Give a history, and then explain why that history is relevant to the newer players who never experienced it. Tell them how rich the world was, how players created their own fun, how the best mechanics emerged from play instead of being dictated by the mechanics.

That's because SOE had screwed up EQ so bad starting with Luclin that people were screaming to get out. If Luclin and everything that followed, especially the craptastic back-to-back wretched expansions of Gates of Discord and Omens of War circa 2004, hadn't been such a stinking turd, the game would have survived a lot better.
Psst. Luclin was Verant's fuck-up, not SOE. Why do you think SOE took full control at that point?
Hint: Consider Vanguard's 'development'.

Planes of Power was a great final chapter for a 5 year old game that ran its course. If PROTF manages to repeat that, if PROTF manages to drive the game on for 5 years, that will be 10 times as long as we've probably spent on average per MMORPG in the last 10 years. If it crashes and burns because it ruined itself at that point with too much content and too much mudflation, it will have been a great success.

Absolutely true. I have a different set of expectations for an indie game like Pantheon than I would for a flagship game by a multi-national corporation.
