Brad, look at LDoN (Lost Dungeons of Norrath) as a template on how to do instancing right. If you sprinkle in linear story telling like that throughout the game world, I think you can get away with it. I'm hardcore anti-instancing and I'm even fine with that approach. It's not a slippery slope with us. I hate a lot of instancing, I don't care for games that have a lot of instancing. I've rarely seen it done right, but when it is done right (sparingly) it can be a really cool way to tell a story. I'm talking 90/10 here, or maybe even 95/5.
I'm glad you're going with more realistic. I thought even VG look to "plastic".More realistic, but we're not going to go nuts like with Vanguard and try to have the latest, greatest DX12+ uber-shaders, lighting, etc. because we want an average game machine to be able to play just fine at launch.
I think a good approach to take is, "if it were real, how would it look?". That means female armor that's actually armor (and not boob armor), also no shoulder pads that are so huge the character couldn't keep his own balance (WoW), no plastic looking shaders, etc. Stuff like that.
