Is it bad to go straight to kickstarter with no community/hype? Apart from reading this forum and maybe a few select others. Would it not have been more beneficial to get a website up and official forums and to gain knowledge and feed back? Also another thing that always puts me off kickstarters is the silly things they offer and how games get built around that. SOTA and housing as a good example of that. Most off the time I read the higher tiers of funding and it puts me off backing at all. What can they offer you as a higher backer that doesn't piss off potential lower backers? I'm hoping that the backing is very simple and nothing to crazy. Alpha backer, beta backer so on. Maybe name a NPC but I'm not even keen on that. if they go for any crazy items or perks I will feel the games at a loss from the start for me. I hope they know how important it is to get this part right and not disengage their core player base for short term money. seems odd to me to not talk to the people who are hyped about the game on the type of payment method they would like? maybe I'm just too drunk and worried over nothing. Just hope they keep shit simple.

If they are using SOE assets from junked iterations of EQ:N, the kickstarter may be extremely impressive, and thus generate a lot of buzz. Let's hope.

You know, you're right.

A lot of people are going to miss the kickstarter because Brad didn't create enough followers to this project. They need to create the website with the project's name and get people's feedback. We get to know more about the project and we spread the word to friends. Then and only then they can release their kickstarter campaign.

It would feel more like money grab to many people. Unless Brad already worked on the project and have a playable demo to show off; then even I would hesitate to back the project....

I learned from kickstarter not to take MMORPG projects seriously if there wasn't enough assets available to show off. It's either that or stating the initial pledge goal to nothing less than $2,000,000. If the initial pledge goal was something less than a million dollars I would definitely have doubts they would be able to complete the game.

It would end up being sold to SOE and left for dead... 2007 take two.

I find anyone's lack of skepticism disturbing. This is and will most likely always be vaporware. If I was him, I'd make a short list of companies that might share his vision and put up a small investment to at least get a coded asset to take to a kickstarter campaign. That's just a business observation.

Well.. you don't know if he has secured any other funds at this point.. None of us do. I know he was trying to.

As far as hype.. Some of the gaming media released something in regards to Brad leaving SoE to make a new MMO. I don't think it will be much of an issue as when the KS launches he will make the rounds. I want forums as early as possible.. I kind of hope he ties them to the KS. You get access if you donate until say beta where they open up for everyone. That way we can have one huge love affair!

He's had years to think about this game from a creative standpoint, so I think he already has a very good idea of what he wants to do. He went back to SOE, and did some time with VG, seeing what people loved, and what they hated, then he moved over to EQ, and did the same. He most likely has all the races figured out, as well as some basic lore; he also probably has the basic classes figured out. Hell he may have the whole thing worked up in detail on paper, and now needs to get some code monkeys, artists, and some server guru's.

I think this KS will show what he wants the game to be, and will be an attempt to raise enough money to get some tech and art assets built; then we'll see another KS later, which will feature fly overs, some basic character animation demos, and other "tech demo" type stuff.

Some people set up websites prior to a Kickstarter launch, others wait until the project is live. That's not going to be the determining factor of his success. He's built up enough hype to get a small buzz going on various forums and websites (including Massively) and when this thing goes live, it's going to hit all those same channels and more.

Whether or not this thing is successful depends on how good his pitch is and whether or not people believe his team will deliver on this old school MMO a lot of us dream about. He'll have about 30 days to convince people to fund the project but by the close of the first day, you can gather some idea on if there is even a chance of being funded.

Some people come out and completely shit the bed, others put a lot of heart and soul into their pitch. One always comes out more successful than the other. Brad needs to have a realistic and exciting pitch, and he needs to have us believe that he and his team are legitimately excited to be developing it.

I took a look at the comments on massively, MMORPG.com and f13.net.

Rerolled is by far the most positive/optimistic, which is some Bizarro shit.

The people eyeing it now are going to be the most critical. It's going to be a mix of people hopeful for a return to the past and people who've tattooed "NEVAR FUCKIN FORGET" on their forehead for the whole Vanguard ordeal.

I think if things go awry the doubters are going to have fun saying "see, I told you!!" But, I think if the project looks pretty damn good, they'll easily swap sides.

It's going to take more than people who've etched McQuaid's history in their diaries though. If Brad wants success, it's going to have to hit with a new audience that's sick of the hand holding shit, too. The nostalgia-filled people are the game's built in audience, he's going to have to convince thousands of other people who hate everything about modern MMOs, too.

Desperation for nostalgic, unforgivingly hardcore game-play does strange things to people - despite the Vanguard debacle, I'd forgive it all in a heartbeat if Brad knocked (another) one out of the park.

Plus, the MMO market is ripe for something different. Ironically, it could be both EQ:N/L *and* something like Brad's "Vision."

Im not surprised at f13 at all. They danced with joy on the grave of Vanguard stating it proof that the stupid "old school" ideas of grouping, slow progression, blahblah, were dead. If you disagreed you were an idiot, there was no room in the tent for you.

The last 2 times in the last say 6 years or so I said i will play X game over and over to the death because it is so worth my time ( even with flaws ) were:

1. Skyrim to this day
2 Vanguard on and off from launch

just sayin.

I'd play the hell out of an oldschool EQ-style game. But it has to actually be like EQ, meaning, the world is an unexplored world, the players aren't in control of the content, etc...
I've always been a large proponent for 'player created worlds' in my early days of EQEmu. The problem being, once you give the players the tools to do everything that the people who run the game have, the world feels disenchanted.

One of the coolest feelings from EQ1 was GM/high level character interaction. You're this powerless level 6 character, for example, and you see this big flaming sword guy. This big flaming sword guy says, "Yo, someday, you'll be like me."
That blew my mind playing EQ for the first time.

Seeing that high level player with a bunch of raid gear made me want to become that high level player. I wanted to figure out how he got that piece of gear that looks cool. And that feeling is gone the moment you show the players what's possible.
In EQEmulator, I always tried to do something that would blow people's minds away. I wanted to make things that other people haven't thought of yet.

Even on P99, I did this. Take a look at the scripted CTF event we did on P99, while not classic, it likely gave the feeling of "Holy crap, I didn't know that was possible in the EQ Engine."

That feeling is the same feeling EQ1 gave me when I was first starting out. Except now imagine that, 13 years later.

That's what I imagine a new McQuaid project to be, and what Vanguard should have been.

So, you mean, kinda like the first time someone does drugs? You want that first time feeling again?

Call me cynical, but I think it's called a first-time experience for a reason...

Ya don't need to pop her hymen for it to be a good fuck. I enjoyed the shit out of Vanguard, and that was years after Everquest.

If it makes you feel any better I don't even really expect this to get beyond the Kickstarter phase. If Brad asks for anything under a few million it'll be a bare bones shit game and I don't think there's enough people still pining for the Hard Core days of yore to be able to raise a few million.

But that's just me and I'm a bit of an odd ball around here in that I don't feel the need to continually pound a thread with my opinion on how shit I feel the new MMO heart throb is going to be whether it be TESO, Wildstar or this unnamed project

I'll say it again , I've given far more money to pathetic pieces of shit like SWTOR (CE ) , bored of GW2 within a couple weeks , WAR , etc etc, over the past few years. So backing a kickstarter that at least is proposing to make my type of game makes far more sense than the money I wasted on the trite crap the mmo industry has released basically since VG.
