If it makes you feel any better I don't even really expect this to get beyond the Kickstarter phase. If Brad asks for anything under a few million it'll be a bare bones shit game and I don't think there's enough people still pining for the Hard Core days of yore to be able to raise a few million.

But that's just me and I'm a bit of an odd ball around here in that I don't feel the need to continually pound a thread with my opinion on how shit I feel the new MMO heart throb is going to be whether it be TESO, Wildstar or this unnamed project
we would have some short threads if we only spoke our peace once;-)

If nothing else this game(if launched in a reasonable state) will answer some questions we've debated for a long ass time. Can a new game like EQ be successful in today's market and if so how successful? Most people used the argument that there was no money in making a game like this, so let's see if their argument holds up.

Demand is higher than expected.

Who would actually pay big bucks for the 38 studio assets and IP?

Why is a better question.

Because creating all those assets is hard and takes a LOT of time and money. The IP is disposable. Nobody cares outside of the people who were making the game. But those assets have HUGE value for a small company if they can get them cheaply enough. It's why an engine like say Unity has an asset store. You can prototype shit with basic assets, and then create your own as needed once you've figured out your game mechanics/world/etc.

I won't be shocked to see something with Unity. I'd like for them to use those old EQN assets, but it's not as easy as batting your eyes and asking nicely for assets that might be used in the future for SOE.

I still want to see what this pitch encompasses. It's hard to imagine it's to actually fully fund an MMO. A budget-aware MMO is still going to be costly.

When you are prototyping games, you could have fancy cubes that change color to demonstrate NPC mechanics. It doesn't matter if he has art assets now (it would be silly if that's the first thing on his mind) and it would be silly to use art you don't have the rights to (EQNext prototype art).

He hasn't even announced the details on his game yet; while I am sure there are internal discussions, a video showing your vision to gauge interest would be a better idea than buying assets & making a game for him right now. Besides, I am fairly confident that Brad McQuaid has learned from himself and others... you have to pitch a game first, flush out the mechanics, and then say "Hey, we need artists!" after everything is set in stone and funded and assured that people want the game he's creating. Otherwise, Vanguard happens.

This is the glory of kickstarter; you determine whether or not he gets to make his game. If it succeeds, he hires people that can make it under his vision while designing the core parts of the game itself in the meantime.

ummm, as sad as this is, compared to most MMO's that are released, vanguard was pretty successful...

So, you mean, kinda like the first time someone does drugs? You want that first time feeling again?

Call me cynical, but I think it's called a first-time experience for a reason...
EverQuest wasn't my first MMORPG and I know I want to play a game that mimics the experience again.

I got tired of listing the game mechanics EQ offered that no other game is offering at the moment. Pull your fingers off your ear and stop shouting "Lalalala" this "first kiss" bull-crap is a myth some haters LOVE and WISH it to be true.

If you think we're deluded nostalgic bunch, why do you even care to prove that we are? (assuming that it's only about "first time experience") Why does it bother you? I don't understand those people jumping on forums cater to what WE WANT (we know what we want) and some douchebag jumps at you and say "No, you don't want this... you're just deluded."

because these idiots would rather tell us what we really want over and over again on a forum rather than actually playing the games they keep thinking are better options...

This thread is getting hella rose-colored without even a hint of an announcement. Heh.

Yes, we're all wearing rose-colored glasses. Congratulations, you "get it".

Since Brad hinted that he checks the forums. How about we list the top five things we would like to see on his project and the top five things we DON'T want to see implemented?

I would say No Cash Shop would be the first in what "I don't want to see implemented" list.

Do you have any numbers for that, or like a list of what "most MMOs" encompasses? Because tbh I do not believe that. I can think of a few fails that might have performed worse (that "Pirates!" the MMO thing, Tabula Rasa maybe, etc) but I would never say most. Out of pure, baseless speculation I would put VG in the bottom quarter of MMOs, which is far from "pretty successful compared to most releases".

Want:

1) Really hard mobs, can't play Vanguard anymore, so boring, steamrolling through dungeons - people hardly even take a scratch.
2) Complex combat - I like having to think about what I'm doing, there needs to be good choices and bad choices, I want to be able excel by being good and fail by being bad.
3) All loot is rare - like EQ, not new items dropping constantly and from every quest turn in.
4) Don't over engineer - I want to be able to solo in dungeons, albeit slowly and v dangerous. Like I could in Lower guk - dont make everything linked and 5 dots etc.
5) I want there to be some really great elaborate dungeons at the high levels. I don't like raiding, so I want to know there is stuff for me to do later on, to motivate me to keep playing.

Dont want:
1) Dumbed down gameplay like Vanguard. Every tank has multiple taunts, single target AND ae, every healer has tons of heal output, ever caster has ways to recover mana, healers can rez people mid fight, etc. Game is just so easy, there are no consequences, it's as dumb as WoW.
2) Fast regen - it makes it so that nothing matters, you dont need to manage mana or play efficiently, or even watch your back. Nothing matters when you can just rest for a moment and you're full again.
3) The Sims - houses, boats, player run farms, dogfighting on a dragon, all this shit uses development time and it's just not worth it. Gimme a D&D game not some farmville/sims thing for 12 year old girls.
4) FTP - it just doesn't work. Vanguard was ruined by it, everyone has flying mounts and overpowered gear now. Charge a fee to preserve the integrity of the gameplay. Keep costs down and hopefully it will only need to be $10 a month.
5) A game that only lasts me 1 or 2 months - TSW, Rift, SWTOR, AoC, War, pretty much everything.
