I liked being able to switch. I was in 3rd person about 80% of the time in everquest, and first person was basically reserved for dungeons. It's just an option I would rather not have taken from me. By all means design the game around first person. I loved it for dungeons, but I like to zoom out and have spatial awareness in places like the karanas or wherever.

I prefer first person designed games, and would like to play them in first person. It could even be a thing where the game forces you into 1st person when you enter an instance to provide a different kind of challenge. Communication and coordination are much more important in first person. Allowing you to have a satellite view in big open spaces seems like it would be OK, but I'd like a lot of emphasis put on designing the game to work well in first person everywhere. First person is just much more visceral as your situational awareness is heavily constricted from the standard.

It's not make or break for me, but I think a heavy reliance on first person would be a good way to carve a niche.

This is one of the problems with 3rd person view, though. Of course you like to zoom out. Then you don't have to actually look around, because you have your god-camera in the sky doing it for you. This is shit for pvp. This starts to affect world design, as things like the in-game architecture get convoluted and gnome cities are suddenly built for giants with huge hallways and huge doorways. Everything has to be oversized to show up well in third person, including shit like shoulder pads. Trust me, giant shoulder pads were so idiots playing WoW in third person could drool over their own armor, and had to be big so you could see them clearly while zoomed way the fuck out so you could see the entire game as if playing gauntlet in an arcade.

First person adds a lot in and of itself, and keeps the aesthetics of the game from becoming disproportionate, comical nonsense.

Is all that worth it just so people don't have to use their character to turn and look around, and can just use a camera? I say no, personally.

No shit. Running the Karana's for me was a combination of Auto-Run and Right click mouse + Left / Right directional keys to pull off some strafing action to scout for murder Griffons.

1st person PoV for life!

Or jump-spinning to look around. :p

Even when I played a wizard and was quad kiting I didn't trust EQ's shitty third-person. I'd always hit f9 too many times or run into a tree because I wasn't used to using directional arrows to control turning, only strafing from years of playing a rogue. So I just jump-stopped 180s to cast and jump-spun 360s to look around. Strafed around mobs to gain what seemed like a bit of speed/distance edge. It just seemed natural to me, but then I'd watch friends kite and realize it was more fun, too, because I could kite in tighter, more dangerous spaces.

Vanguard was awesome, too. Would kite, jump-turn, start casting in mid air, land backwards, walk backwards finishing the cast, then turn and run again. One of the innovations that helped first-person be viable, along with things like the agro list also helped. Of course, in the end everyone just used third person because it was there and gave an advantage. ho hum.

We do need better audio cues and maybe some kind of peripheral vision. The audio in EQ was very recognizable. In WoW so much stuff sounded the same I just tuned it out. If the sounds are distinct enough they give you information about your surroundings.

The Karanas are a bad example of everything. They're boring and plain. Unless you can directly interact with that environment by enclosing land for agriculture or something, you shouldn't have huge featureless expanses.

I think we just need to accept the fact that what we are all really looking for is a Kickstarter for a time machine to take us to March 1999.

Nah.

I just want an MMO that "forces" grouping. Forces teamwork for even leveling content. Where your reputation as one of the best on your server is known, because we arent playing with people we will never see again. Where my rewards are earned not given. Where death means I fucked up and should pay for it. Where tokens get me on the damn boat and not a piece of gear.

Ya know...where I have to PLAY the game and shit like that.

Yea, I completely agree with you. I was basically saying that, at this point, I think the only way we are going to see that is magic'ing ourselves back in time to relive EQ.

Call me jaded with the status quo, but I am quickly losing faith in MMOs. I want it all to matter again, but it seems the system is centered around dollar signs vs actual gameplay and enjoyment. Make everyone happy and make the game as sterile as possible = $$$ right? It sounds obvious, but here we are year after year with the same wow-clone bullshit.

I just needed to rant, I guess.

Can't agree more. I really can't emphasize enough how amazing EQs sounds were. Not just the music, but everything- ambient/environment (that hollow wind sound with the strange bird cries), footsteps, mob sounds, fighting sounds. One of the best was spell sounds. In EQ when you cast a spell it really felt like you were calling down the thunder. Even the dying sounds mobs and pcs made were great.

Sound is one if those areas mmos after EQ really neglected and they suffered for it, because it is one of those essential elements at turns a 'game' into a 'world'.
