I still think one of the most exciting things for me in EQ was arriving at Dread Lands for the first time around Karnor's. Nothing like coming across and seeing this amazingly active wealth of groups chain pulling all around it, that feeling of community and expansiveness was majorly impressive.

aside from the promises, this sounds like entitlement/selfinterested players.
Silius that you? You are right, it certainly is player entitlement to expect the game you bought and played for a year and half or more to remain roughly the same instead of completly changing in the wrong direction despite the overwhelming opposition of the player base. Fuck me for wanting to be able to start a character in its racial starting area, right?

maybe. depends on their agenda. maybe it worked -- they did remarket vg with iod. maybe that did boost enough subs to warrant keeping it afloat.
were they to implement top raid stuff only instead of iod, i doubt it would have less finacial impact than that of trying to garner new attention for new players who didn't have expectations that of a minority of people imo. personally starting off with race specific areas with an existing low pop is depressing when you see nobody for hours. i have no idea of the evidence; it's just that i see a post like this and it reminds me of when brad commented on that actual stats of how the manastone nerf actually effected people and why you shouldn't listen to your playerbase. a balance of finances:idealism:reality
putting one's own name ingame one way or another.. eh that's nitpicking. i've been there too when i was too attached to games/books.

oh. one thing i do want is midi-esc music with sound fonts/sampling of that era .. not new realistic ones nor fully real orchestrated recording. there's a quaint charm to it.

Ah, Runnyeye. I loved that zone.
Runneye was the first zone I stood at the zone line and thought to myself.. "Wow, do I really have to go in there?" We weaved around until we found the other side and actually passed people leveling and pulling the eye for the staff quest (I think). We zoned out and thought it would be clear sailing and you zone right into a maze. Just a cool zone, a cool experience, and it was right between two major areas of the game. Just the overall map and layout of the EQ world was awesome. It may have been pure chance but everything was conducive to the experience.

its been expressed before, but --

one of the coolest things about EverQuest was how unknown everything was. no in-game maps, let alone GPS. no spell descriptions. barely any spoilers for quests, and the player-created spoiler sites that were out there had more misinformation than correct information. it was very much an open world without linear rails for progression.

in real life, the unknown produces fear. but in an MMO, it produces wonder.

really hoping this game brings back that sense of wonder.

I don't know. I don't work for Sony, and I don't know Brad or Silius. But remember this. Even Silius has a boss. You ever consider that the decisions made regarding Vanguard may not have been his? Name one thing after purchasing the game they have done to ensure its success. Haven't you always felt Sony wanted the game to just fucking die? I have. Only reason they bought it was to make sure no one else did and it became competition for the SOE games.

Different world. Everything is data mined now. I would love to have cartography as a skill though. I will never know zones as good as I knew eq ones. Give players the ability to explore every inch and make notes and sell those maps m

There's no boss that tells you to be an ass online to your customers, okay maybe Kotick, but he's the exception. The bottomline is Silius is hated as much, if not more than SOE, by a large number of ex-VG players. You don't get to that status easily.

/aside

Visionary Realms needs to do some damage control with respect to Salim. They need to tell the base that he's just on crafting and not on class design (whether or not he actually is only on crafting, unlikely with a small company ;-) ) and then in about a year after the (we hope) successful kickstarter have him post some kind of mea culpa on the official boards, like Brad did here and (not as fully) on his own site when he wrote the VG post-mortem blogs.

I think a lot of the awe and wonder we experienced was because we were seeing stuff like this for the first time. I doubt Pantheon can recapture that feeling, but if they can make a way for us to go, "Hm. That's pretty cool!" every time we go into a zone for the first time without making it cheesy, then they might come close.

Dude you're just trolling at this point. You're making an assumption about VG based on a comment by Brad in an entirely different game and set of circumstances despite the fact that pretty much everyone on this board who has played the game when Silius was lead dev has stated he was an ass. Get the fuck out and back to whatever galaxy you're from.

/aside OMG, re-reading the silius thread on silkyvenom and I totally forgot about Silius introducing LiveGamer for RMT of toons on VG. Just what every VG player wanted, even though they didn't know it, right catnip?

I've definitely seen frustration towards him, but no form of damage control will be needed for Salim nor will his name make the Kickstarter not get funded. If any name is going to grab attention (and it already has), it's Brad McQuaid. Pantheon's Kickstarter launches soon and the pitch needs to be convincing enough for people to look over any doubts they may have.

This... Seen the day EQII gave experience for discoveries I thought this same thing. Especially if you could somehow work ships and navigation into the game, could you imagine how cool maps, compasses, and other tools would be if they were essential to survival and quality of life?

I'm going to agree that dislike of Salim might not be the reason Pantheon doesn't get funded, if it doesn't get funded. I'm going to disagree about the need for damage control. Mainly because if Salim starts doing his snarky little posts on the Visionary boards during development people are going to get really pissed.

you make a good point about modern data mining. i hope, though, that the Pantheon team comes up with a good way to obfuscate things. not procedurally generated content, because that usually ends up being lame. and some sort of intelligent design that is intuitive without being easily reduced to numbers and algorithms.

everquest dragons/gods respawning exactly 7 days after death was sort of lame. instead of making them rare on a purely timer basis, make them triggered somehow. but make the trigger mechanic something that is unknown and not obvious, but something that can accidentally happen from time to time. like an arcane ritual that can be stumbled across serendipitously, but still requires careful planning and preparation to trigger once the exact mechanics are figured out.

of course the random number generator has to come in somewhere (this whole genre was founded on dice rolls), but don't rely on them too heavily. or too little.

i am semi drunk so sorry if i'm just contributing to the noise more than the signal here

i am just extremely hopeful that this game will be magical.

I meant damage control from his past, but I certainly wouldn't condone anything like that for this project. I think we still agree.
