The first thing I tell all my friends that are in their late 30's or 40's and just now having their first kid.

Pay no attention to the "timelines" they are just a suggestion at most.

This. Also babies tend to focus on one skill at a time. If he's stoked on standing and trying to walk it is going to be the only thing he does for a while.

My wife was all worried because my daughter would never ever laugh, wasn't big on babbling or making noises either. We got big social smiles "on time" though and she was early on all the physical stuff (crawling, standing, walking, etc). Once she mastered walking she switched to talking up a storm now and won't shut the hell up.

She did do hand signals and sign language pretty early though, but we worked on that a lot with her.

I definitely notice the one task at a time thing. My wife said he spent nearly the entire day standing and that was it.

My son is 16 months, he's been walking since about 10 months but isn't talking yet. He understands what we say and will follow commands. He has a few words but that's about it. My wife and I aren't too worried about his speech yet.

I remember reading somewhere that they want kids to have a vocabulary of 20 words by 18 months, they don't have to be English (baby speak counts) or verbal, and of the kids that fail the test 90% are boys and 89.99% of them are perfectly fine.

Wish me luck guys, my wife and I are starting the interview process for a Nanny. We had an awesome Nanny in our last town but it took us about 40 interviews to find her. I am hopeful it will be a little easier in a small town like the one we live in now.

My son just turned 1. He's basically running now.
Grats! Now you really get to enjoy going to other people's homes that in no way shape or form are child proofed. My parents home is like a Museum, those vacations to visit them felt more like work than a vacation.

He's my second. Already know that one. Luckily every where we go is already baby proofed. Everyone we know has young kids.

Be sure to include a swimsuit round.

We were in the same boat with our daughter. Now she's 2 and a half and won't shut up. She talks non stop.

Has he had many ear infections? I know that can be a factor in delayed speech, however 16 months is still pretty early to be concerned with speech. Around the 2 year mark is when we really noticed the speech delay with our youngest.

No, he hasn't had any ear infections. We really aren't that concerned yet, other than our doctor saying he should be saying 5 words at 18 months.

I don't know why my son's teeth decide to come in one at a time, weeks apart, and cause him so much pain that he basically won't sleep at all - but it sucks dick when it happens. Weekend from hell. Yes, I drug him. Yes, I post this every time a tooth comes in.

He's been eating regular food a bit - chicken, bananas, cheerios, some vegetables (soft). We tried to give him meatloaf and he acted like it was the worst thing he'd ever eaten in his life. Maybe too much seasoning on it and was overwhelming. We gave him some pizza at Uno's and it was the best thing he's ever eaten in his life. He was screaming in ecstasy.

I can't tell if you're overreacting to the kids moods or I just had easy kids. When my kids were teething they'd be a little harder to put to bed, sometimes be running a fever and need tylenol, and sometimes they didn't want to play and just wanted to cuddle. But they didn't act like yours is at all. All kids are different I guess.

Nah not overreacting - we'll put him down and after a couple hours he's screaming his head off, the type of scream where they can't breathe. We'll medicate him and feed him and put him back down, sometimes he'll go to sleep but other times he'll continue the screaming/coddling routine until 3 or 4 am when I guess he just passes out from exhaustion. He was just cranky all weekend during the day too. He's a pussy when teeth are coming in.

Draegan he's almost 11 months now. He also ate an entire grilled cheese sandwich... the dude eats.. a lot..

Teething is the reason behind infant amnesia, I swear...

My son got his molars, and he's 14 months old, so I feel your pain.

As far as the meatloaf, every food that isn't hypersweet takes a few "tastings". Part of the reason the recommendation for introducing new foods was "one or two a week" was to give kids a chance to adapt to the new flavors. Try meatloaf again a day or so later and see how he reacts.
