I think I've come to the conclusion that the passive tree is a pile of shit. Because stats don't impact damage and there's basically no resists or health in it, the only thing that matters are a few clusters of relevant nodes. Because they are spaced out just enough to limit the number you can achieve, but also far enough to prevent you from wandering to acquire peculiar combinations of them, it's basically pointless.
If you are a ranger and want to go lightning there are basically two directions you can do and you grab mostly everything lightning and elemental in that direction. Because most of the nodes are boring (+dam, +pen, affliction bonus, etc.), once you figure out which of this gives more benefit that really means you've only got one direction. You certainly can't get both because they're just far away. So it's really just a decision of which filler clusters you take, after you get what defensives you can.
I think they'd need to basically double the density of the clusters of useful nodes to actually make choice relevant.
