should also talk about mana for new players.

Firstly, mana works like D2 mana.
Mana regen is 105% of max mana per minute. or 1.75%/s.

So a larger mana pool will increase your mana regen per second.

Example. you have 200 mana.
And then you have two passive trait options.
+20% mana regen, or 8%max mana.

200 mana is 3.5/s.
216 mana is 3.78/s
200 mana with +20% regen, is 4.2

Frostburn effect is still in play though. An item that gives +200 mana will be a huge increase to your regen, as well as max pool.
Not sure you can even get mana regen % on gear.

Mana reserves.

some persistent spells. auras usually, will reserve an amount of your mana.
clarity for example. 60-440 mana reserved.
This blocks a portion of your mana pool from being used. The total is still counted for regen of course though.

support totems will drop later. level 30+ iirc.
they are a support gem. you can get traps and mines in the same way.

As well as specific totems.
you probably have seen firetrap before? its a low skill.

http://en.pathofexilewiki.com/wiki/Spell_Totem

remote mine, and trap are three support gems that will turn any skill into a totem, mine or trap.

some of these are hilarious, if not actually useful..

Greater multi proj, trap, freezing pulse?

I saw fire trap as a spell yeah. Used it quite a lot actually.

So I get it. You have Support gems that you can link to a skill so you can link Totem + Effect + Spell + Whatever and that spell becomes a totem then?

Fire Trap is just a single gem that I found, not sure what the similarity is though.

well nothing directly. i was just using firetrap as an example of a remote skill you might have seen already.
Then explaining, later you will find the "trap" support gem. that will let you turn ANY skill into a trap, like firetrap.

Same for totems.

Someone explain to me what spell totems are, or just totems? Are they spells or are they things you can slot spells in? or both?

I also just learned that gems in a single item are linked together and that's how support gems work (I only got one from the quest and thats it. Didn't really play around with it).

Lots in this game isn't explained at all. Game seems pretty good.
The game is very Dark Soul-esque in terms of throwing a lot of shit at you without any explanation. I like that the game starts with a popup tutorial thing like Equip your gem" so you think it's gonna have a lot of tips. And this is literally the only tip in the entire game lol.

It has a lot of depth and mechanics too so that doesn't help. If you compare to Diablo3 which was both less complex and had a ton more helping tips, it's pretty rough.

As for totems, the normal skill totems are just that, you drop them, they do their stuff, Flame Totem does flames, Rejuvenation Totems heal you, Decoy totem taunts shit. Spell Totem is a support gem you get later that lets you turn any other spell into a totem. An easy example is your starting Fireball spell. You add a Spell Totem support to it and now instead of casting fireball, you cast a totem that casts fireball non stop for you. You can still cast Fireball if you have another Fireball gem or another spell entirely, while your totem does it. You can also spec to get a 2nd totem, which lets you either drop 2 of the same totem or if you have multiple spells linked to totems(or multiple different totems) one of each. There's similar support gems for traps and mines that let you setup any skill in a trap/mine/totem form. You can even make a trap that summons a totem, it's pointless but eh.

All these supports is the reason why sockets and links become the most important factor, because it's more important to be able to for example link Fireball to Lesser Multiple Projectiles(shoot 3fireballs instead of 1), Elemental Proliferation(if you proc Ignite which is a status effect from Fire crits, it spread to every mob around), Chance to Ignite(gives a chance to Ignite even on non crits), Faster Casting(obvious) and Mana Leech(gives a % of the dmg back as mana, generally a good support for spells with a lot of supports to compensate for their higher cost) than to get +30int or +15all resist or whatever. Stats on items are still important but the links are a lot more, because the difference between that 5L Fireball and the basic Fireball is night and day. And Fireball isn't even really a good spell that's just an example.

Btw if you have questions ingame my current char is named Pyros_Eien.

I'm starting to love this game just based on the complex mechanics and shit. Pyros what kind of character did you end up making or plan on making at release?

Summoner, thus the guide. I really love playing it and it's a great starting character when you have no gear, it's more or less gear independant and very strong, and also very safe for hardcore play. I find it quite fun too and there's a ton of possible variation of the build you can do. I mean it's mostly summoning but curses, auras and damage spells offer a lot of customization, you can make really offensive or really defensive summoners with few skill points changes if any.

I'll also be making a melee but not too sure what yet, I've been thinking about various builds, DW or 1H+shield mostly, might try an acrobat shield ranger see how it works out.

Can you link the guide please?

I got a witch to act 2, but the zombors were dying like a couple of hits. Guess I didnt branch out to the passives booster nodes for it fast enough. It was def fun though, I pretty much just raised zombies and fireball spammed. I guess Ice would work better to slow down enemies for your zombros/skellies to chomp through.

Edit: nvm got it

Yeah as I explain in the guide and said earlier here, Summoner is a pretty slow starter. Mostly in normal difficulty, you're going to be playing as a DPS witch without DPS passives, so it's not very good. As you level up though zombies get tougher and tougher, you get the minion health supports on them(and dmg too), you get all those minion life nodes and their base scaling is pretty decent plus when you start getting a bunch of them, most enemies tend to attack them then switch targets so the dmg is all spread out. Add to that Discipline aura giving them ES if you're close enough and Reanimation flasks that heal them(any health flask can get the reanimation mod, might only start at 25+ though not sure) and around lvl 40 Zombies pretty much never die unless fighting really bullshit mobs like those dogs that leave fire patches when they die or suicide zombies.

For the spell, I'd recommend against using Fireball, it's not a very good spell until you have a bunch of supports for it. Raw, Freezing Pulse, Firestorm or Ethereal Knives is what you should look at. Ice Nova is supposedly decent too but never tried. Spark and Fireball are too dependant on supports to become good. First supports are only at lvl 15 though, which is fairly fast if you know what you're doing(not so much the first time but later it takes like an hour/hour and a half to get to 15). The main issue with supports is you only get one from a quest reward at 15 then one later at like lvl 20+, but your choice is small and sometimes getting 2 supports is better, so you either need to trade or roll another char to get the support on them. If you've completed Act1 though, it's very easy to run another account through it to get the quest rewards on another class. All you need to do is complete the glyph quest(use high lvl to clear the area), then open a TP with the high lvl in Brutus room for the low lvl and solo it, then open a TP in cavern of wrath for the newb and you get all the good rewards from act1, takes about 7-8mins total.

That's the guide link btw but it's on first page anyway:
http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/63871

The early game part can generally be applied to every class to an extent.

I've got a cold witch summoner that has GMP and Cold Penetration on freezing pulse and almost all the summoner passives so I have a shit ton of minions all over the place. I've got Minion Instability and skeletons on a totem...so I basically have a ton of minions (I believe 8 zombies, 10 skeletons, and 2 Spectres) constantly being summoned that can explode when they are low life, and a freezing pulse that blast half the screen. Pretty effective so far.

yeah the ice spells are generally considered the best for witch.'

at least they were.

There are a few new supports since I last played.
Just got arc on my witch. pretty sure that wasn't in before.

What is up with curses?
I used to run, temporal curtain, and elemental weakness.

Is that still in the game? I saw, quest rewards for, cold, fire and lit curse, alone. not one that does all.

Lit is strong if only for shock Duergan as well. Be aware of that. shock occurs on crit, or specific debuff. It increase damage taken by the target from all targets by like 50% per stack. 3 stacks.

Started a new witch with freezing pulse, and holy fuck, I ran medicine chest quick. So night and day vs. fire.

Getting so much nice gear too for some reason
Mask that is 17ev 5engshi, 9int 3eva, 23% evasion+engshi, 13% rarity etc
Robe that is 8int 18 mana 26%engishi 1damage reflect

Double wands is fine too, not sure if you get the DW block with wands though but otherwise you get a baseline 15%block 15%attackspeed(useless for witch) for DWing, which is decent enough if you don't plan on face tanking stuff and wands will have better offensive stats than spirit shields. Unique fire staff is good too for well a fire build.

Draegan btw not sure if you're actually rerolling or what, but unless you've taken fire passives, you don't need to, just transfer the freezing pulse gem to your main witch and it'll be leveled up to a decent amount in no time.

Frost in general is very strong, but it doesn't work that well with minions in some cases, since a mob that dies while procing chill or freezing shatters into ice blocks and you can't raise the corpse for a spectre/zombie.

And Caliane for curses they're still in but they give you the new curses first. You get Enfeeble, Vulnerability later, Temporal Chains is a drop only gem. I use Vulnerability and Temporal on my summoner, Vuln is brutal for dmg and Temporal is stupid OP for bosses(not rares but like story bosses which don't have corpses around to rez non stop and shit). Oh and shock is 40% per stack, so up to 120%. You can also get shock procs without crits assuming you're using certain spells like Arc or Shock Nova or by using the Static Blows passive or also by using the elemental specific curse Conductivity(all those curses give the same % reduction than Elemental Weakness, but the benefit for only reducing one resistance is a % chance to proc the effect even when not critting). I think you can get like 75% to shock on quality Arc with Conductivity maxed and Static Blows node.

This is what I would be looking at currently. Softcore. Updated of the old witch.
I don't know where many of the new items or skills change how it used to play.
Shock nova used to be awful. cold snap as bad, and seems even worse now..

I used to run add lightning and lesser multi on my freezing pulse.
Temporal chains, and elemental weakness. So, weakness and massive slow on targets, then shotgun them in the face with freezing pulsex3, with lit damage to shock.

Long range was +crit ice spears of course.

Ice wall to shut down anything dangerous.

Fork, chain, etc are new supports I haven't gotten a chance to play with yet. well, had fork, but didnt seem to do anything for pulse, and didnt like it on spear, so gave it to the ranger.

Forking or chaining arc? seems interesting.

Used to run wands for spell damage, but thinking of swapping to daggers for the crit. New passive tree seems to have too many crit options to not go for that.

Arc has chain baseline. I tried using a fork gem with Arc but it didn't seem to do anything and I would assume it's because arc is not a projectile.
