I kinda gave up on progressing now, I'm grinding exp in catacombs instead, which is area level 53 because I can't progress through battlefront, which is 49. Resistances through passive skills are next I guess, I already unlocked a node.

Thundershit or whatever that invisible death ray is really bugs the hell out of me. Whatever it is the Arcmages cast. Fuck dieing to mobs that are not even on your screen

Arc and yeah it's very bullshit if you're not lightning capped. Resists become very important at the end of cruel and then as you progress through merciless(even though for the most part in merc you can get to felshrine or even sarn with shit resists). Don't know what setup you're using but you should certainly look into buying a shield with the innate resists and a resist roll on it, they're generally not too expensive if they have like 30-40health and +15resists and since they give 24 innate they're insanely efficient when shitty geared. Can buy it for an alch to a chaos, and rerolling sockets on shields is also very easy and cheap since max is 3 anyway, so generally 1-4jewellers and 1-2 fusings is all you need for the sockets. Can often find a 3sockets already for the same price though. Also Purity is great for leveling when undergeared and most builds can run it as long as they're willing to sacrifice their DPS aura for it.

The Piety you fight in the 73 map or whatever destroys me with 85% lightning resist (flasked), how the hell do people handle her?

I'd love to hear how other people own that spider in jungle valley? Even when its going right she might drop 40 magic spiders and 5 rares the last 10 waves, frustrating as hell.

For piety, enfeeble, temp chains if possible, and kill it offscreen. That's how I've seen most people deal with it. Some melee builds just face tank her though, high regen does the trick. Depends on map mods though, multiproj or reduced resists is basically a nope. No idea about spider boss, guess it depends on the aoe you're using, some builds don't care about the amount of mobs it all dies the same, like infernal blow or LA, as long as there's no reflect the more the better.

I was trying the offscreen angle thing with my spec throw but one loose ball served my ass.

Ive never done temp chains for bosses, would prob be better for me than frostbite which is worthless.

You guys think crafting is a huge waste of currency because you are doing it completely wrong. The correct way to craft that bow would have been to scour it, then use alterations on it until you got two good stats, then finally use a regal on it.
I'm fucking aware of that, but getting two good phys stats on a weapon easily takes around 2000 alterations, which is three months of farming when you don't trade for them, and then there's about 5% chance of the regal yielding a third usable stat. The "crafting" system in this game is completely broken and almost guarantees that the player wastes everything for no return whatsoever. In terms of time vs. chance of getting a good weapon, chaos-spamming is actually byfarthe best method; the 1000xalt and regal method isn't even remotely viable if you have to farm the currency yourself. I've been doing it since closed beta and have literally never got a good stat on the regal. Out of the like 200 affixes an item can get when you regal it, usually maybe five of them are worthwhile and the other 195 will ruin the item because lol '7 life gained per kill.'

I hate hardcore, but playing with other (good gear/skill) players makes it kind of a thrill. ALT+F4ing out of 1/10 maps is annoying, but also a rush. Though I'm ranged, back when I was melee desync deaths were much more of an annoyance than thrill~

I always assumed this would be the case, but I never even got an alteration roll worth using a regal on. There's no way it's an equal chance for every stat and every tier. Stats like IIR and IIQ are vastly more rare than other things, and I'd venture a guess that there's about a 2-3% chance of rolling a L70+ affix compared to about 50% chance you'll get something below L30.

My favorite thing was finding an upgrade, getting it linked up, then using a few stacks of chromatic orbs to end up with the exact same colors/placement that I started with. So much fun.

No, getting two good phys stats takes an infinite amount of alterations, since you can't get two phys stats with alterations. All the phys modifiers are prefixes, and a magic item can only ever have 1 prefix.

Maybe if you learned how the crafting system worked, you wouldn't have such a shitty time.

Listen, you're complaining because the game is too random, but that randomness is exactly what keeps people playing for months and months. Getting a perfect set of gear is practically impossible, at least outside of the infinite softcore league. They could make you more likely to roll good rolls when crafting, but that would just make all the characters in the game stronger, and they would have to up the challenge on the top maps to keep the top end playing. As it is, the game allows you to do all the actual content in the game self found, but it has a nearly infinite difficulty scaling curve on high level maps that allows the most dedicated to keep searching for incremental upgrades to go ever slightly higher. Unless they automatically gave you the best gear in the game after X number of hours, you would never be able to do the highest level maps self found without killing the challenge for the people trading and playing more than you.

If I may ask, how would you change the game to make it easier on self found characters without ruining the long term challenge and reward for the top players?

For starters, I wouldn't care about a handful of "top" players at the expense of everyone else. If it eventually gets too easy at level 90 because you have the best possible gear, due to the loot system only being "moderately stingy" instead of "the stingiest system ever imagined," so fucking what? They can reroll like all the people who hit a brickwall in the 70's do because they haven't gotten an upgrade in weeks and blew all their currency on failing to make something half-decent.

The problem with PoE isn't "RNG", it's
RNG
RNG
RNG

Yeah, it's kind of annoying in merciless because you need to grind out a few levels and upgrade an item or two before going further. I still have problems in areas several levels below me. I just traded for a lot of new gear to max out resistances and up my health, but I still get owned in more difficult areas. Pretty much the only time I try to progress now is right after I gain a level from grinding, otherwise I lose too much exp trying to down bosses. Or if you're grouping, hope everyone has good gear.

It doesn't increase LR cap, it's just normal resist. But it does make you immune to shock which is fairly useful. For ele bosses what you want is a Saffrel's Frame(it's a shield), Purity of ... aura leveled up, if possible in an alpha howl's helm or with passives that increase aura efficiency(can get like 6% or something fairly easy).

A little late to the loot discussion, but here goes.

Obviously, as time progresses in a closed system the standard for what is considered a good item goes up. We all remember items for millions and millions of gold in the first month of D3 that wouldn't even make to the vendor now. Eventually, only perfect items have any value, and having an efficient trading mechanism and high player pool speeds this timeline up dramatically. This is why PoE has 4 month leagues. There just isn't enough time for enough drops to accumulate to make items 'perfect or gtfo.' Add in hardcore and you have mechanism that both reduces supply AND increases demand: the value of items takes much much longer to decline. Even as item value declines relatively, currency has very stable value.

That being said, self found in PoE is not really viable and won't ever be. But you really don't have to do that much trading to be able to tackle most maps. The max end of gear is orders of magnitude stronger than what you need for most content. On my current character, I can handle any map (except blood magic) without much trouble. My amulet, both rings, my belt, and my gloves were self found. I paid 6 chaos for my boots, 2 chaos for my weapon, 3 chaos for my chest and 2 exalts for my shield, and that's it. I 6 linked my chest with fuses I made from vendoring items into alts -> jewelers -> fuses.

I actually got that helm the other night Pyros, the Alphas howl. I'll have to check out the Saffrels frame.

Sadly I was an idiot learning along the way and didnt use auras until 70.

I was wondering what you guys think The Anvil is worth on domination league. I'm looking to buy one if anyone has it on GrizzlyToga.

Thinking about starting a new build based on Cast on Crit. I realized that lightning strike could be used with daggers for high crit chance and has projectiles so a projectile spell and projectile supports would create good synergy.

Was thinking:
Lightning strike+chain+cast on crit+spark+lmp/gmp/fork (+life leech or culling strike)

spark/LS leads to good +lightning damage synergy,
chain benefits both LS and spark (and -> autotargetting for the LS)
chain+spark also means this could be a single target and multitarget skill (single target should get hit by all the sparks and more sparks come out the back end due to chain)
LS and spark both benefit from projectile damage nodes
arcing blows node is 30% increased damage for the projectile part of the LS skill.
combined physical/lightning damage means reflect mobs may be less of a problem (although high crits make this worse)

I would go CI/IR and run haste and probably purity.

Here's a pretty rough draft of a passive tree; I'd welcome feedback on inefficiencies here. Seems like this could be a very high dps build though.

Passive Skill Tree - Path of Exile

Also, since I'm going CI melee, would dream fragments be a must?
My main concerns are that the build is too squishy (so many damage nodes, not a ton of ES nodes) and that I will have mana problems.

If you run chain+lmp or fork or worse gmp, you'll do no damage. All these massively reduce projectile damage and spark isn't very high damage to begin with. From what I've seen, the new storm call or whatever spell is actually the best lightning spell by a lot, as it does fairly high damage for a lightning spell.

As for the build, drop the accuracy, don't need them since you connect both ways. If you don't get power charges though, I'd drop that way. For Ghost Reaver you'll need life leech support otherwise it's useless. Mana Drinker is useless regardless as you can only leech on the melee portion of lightning strike and only half of it, and I doubt you'll actually hit anything with it, probably just play it at range. It seems low on ES and high on damage, reflect would kill you easily, the big issue with playing a lightning crit build is when you reflect a crit, you get crit, by lightning. As CI. Fairgraves Tricorne would be an absolute must, there's simply no way to even consider running this otherwise. Even with the hat, I'd heavily consider the option of running Purity of Lightning permanently. Anyway, on the skill tree, I'd consider the ES in the witch area, and dropping one of the dagger nodes, most likely the one at the bottom that has life in it, it's not so good as CI and you can free up a fuckton of points dropping the whole lot of it and connecting from the int nodes near CI instead, which would let you grab a large amount of ES nodes. Also you forgot a couple of 60% crit nodes.

Something like this maybe, I don't really know if I'd build like that or with as many points but just showing the things I'm talking about:
Passive Skill Tree - Path of Exile

And yes dream fragments or alpha's howl would be a must, but since you need a tricorne, then dream fragments it is.
