Not sure what this grass on my tracker is, I
New version on beta test in San Francisco. That's the tracker we were waiting for:

img_4301.png

Basically, the tracker will work like this: for nearby pokemon, it shows the picture of the nearest Pokestop/Gym. Click on the pokestop and it shows it on your map:

The creators of Pokémon Go are testing a big, awesome, new way to find nearby Pokémon

That's gonna be really fucking useful in areas with very low pokestop density.

el patch notes

Trainers, Pokémon GO has been updated to version 0.33.0 for Android and 1.3.0 for iOS.

Trainers,

Pokémon GO has been updated to version 0.33.0 for Android and 1.3.0 for iOS devices. Below are some release notes and comments from our development team.

  • Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while traveling above a certain speed. Trainers must confirm they are not driving in order to continue playing.
  • Made improvements to the accuracy of a curveball throw
  • Fixed a bug that prevented ”Nice,” ”Great,” and “Excellent” Poké Ball throws from awarding the appropriate XP bonuses.
  • Fixed achievements showing incorrect Medal icons.
  • Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time. Please choose your new nickname wisely.
  • Resolved issues with the battery saver mode on iOS and re-enabled the feature.
  • Added visuals of Team Leaders Candela, Blanche, and Spark.
  • We’re currently testing a variation of the “Nearby Pokémon” feature with a subset of users. During this period you may see some variation in the nearby Pokémon UI.
  • Minor text fixes
We hope you enjoy this new version and please share your feedback!

Lured pokemon are undetectable because they are client side, not server side.

So anyway, uh, I hatched my 5th 10k egg today. Too bad I'll never have the candy to evolve it ><

I don't understand - lures work for everyone...

smoke is the thing that only works for the user?

The pokemon are server side, not client side. If they were client side, Tyen would be drowning in Mewtwos. However pokemon from lures haven't shown up on the tracker before for whatever reason.

I don't know how I feel about the tracker changes. Obviously they're useless for anywhere but heavily pokestopped areas. My guess is that they'll add in something else for suburban and rural areas later.

But for those heavily pokestopped areas the idea seems ok. Just ok, not great. The tracking game of figuring out where a pokemon is was pretty fun even if it was buggy and a little shallow. If the new tracking system means I can just walk to the specific pokestop and pick up my pokemon, then there's not really any gameplay and it's just a matter of travelling quickly enough to a pokestop. Ok, whatever.

Pokemon and PoGo have four pillars of gameplay:
1. Finding pokemon
2. Catching pokemon
3. Training pokemon
4. Battling pokemon

When it was released the only thing that was really fun and engaging was finding pokemon. That was killed off by all the tracking bugs, and the new system doesn't really add it back in.

Looks like they've once again decided to completely fuck over rural/suburban players by basing it on pokestops. Any area with dense pokestops will mean you find pokemons instantly. This will be about as useful to me as the current nearby function is.

Here's a map of my town. I blanked out the really obvious stuff although I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to figure it out. The red marks are where the pokestops are. Unless I can somehow petition to get pokestops added to roughly the 4 corners of town, this feature will be completely useless.

I think the pictures used in the thread aren't doing it justice...

It looks like the icon is just the nearest pokestop so you have a frame of reference, and then it gives you a smaller circle that points to where the pokemon is.

Twitch brought the banhammer down hard, pokemon go still has lots of viewers still.
Channels literally going down within minutes after coming up when they started gps spoofing.

Once again? This game has always been a giant "fuck you" to rural/suburbs or low Ingress playing towns. We literally have three "clusters" (more than 3 stops - most is 7) in an entire metropolitan area of 500k+. The rest of the stops are literally miles apart. I can drive down 4-5 strip malls in a row without seeing a stop - 1 if you're lucky.

Note that Gavinrad's use of "once again" does not imply it was never a fuck you to rural/suburbs. It just means that it's another fuck you to those people.

Seems like pokemon spawns have been drastically reduced; in downtown Jersery City the day before yesterday (didn't play yesterday) I was literally swimming in pokemon constantly. Today I walked around for about 15 minutes and almost no pokemon spawned. The area around the Hudson was a magikarp and psyduck nest before, literally you would walk 15 feet and 6 magikarp and 2 psyduck would spawn all around you. Capture all of them, walk for 5 minutes and another 6 magikarp and 2 psyduck would spawn around you again etc, etc. Today: nothing. In the 15 minutes I walked around I probably only saw about 5 or 6 total spawns and they all gave me an error as soon as I clicked them (well that's not true, I did catch 1 magikarp)

I've noticed significantly less Pokemon in my area too and I doubt it's a coincidence. My guess is that they reduced spawns to adjust for the bandwidth/server capacity constraints by their new tracking system.

The GoIV thing posted a bit earlier doesn't seem to work with the update.

This is still working for me post-update, however, I have noticed that the ability to scan / report accurate CP seems off. You may just need to manually type it in. HP numbers haven't had any trouble.

Yeah it's kind of off and on. Crashes a fair bit, but I do like that you can IV things as you catch them so you can just turn them into candy immediately if they're shit tier.

Not their fault you live in the wilderness.
There's basically two valid complaints here:
1. The game would be better if it catered to exploring the "wilderness" outside of densely packed urban environments.
2. The game's original design demonstrated here:

Is widely divergent, and better, from running a tight, dense circuit of pokestops or camping out on a quadlure.

No pokemon reduction visible during my lunch break walk. Got about the same amount, and the usual regular spawns were there. The guy who was walking with me missed about 10-15% of them, though. I mean, we were next to the pokemon, and even waiting for 30s would net no pokemon for him (usually, it's off by 10s).

That, plus the servers taking ages to thrown pokemon in the grinder - sorry, "giving them to the professor" - means some parts of their infra was probably overwhelmed and didn't spawn correctly if you were on the "wrong" servers.

Agreed, but I think we have to work with in the constraints of the technology and reality.

Less infrastructure available in rural areas, less people, less players, less money, less importance.

They will eventually add Pokemon all over the place but it's not a priority to them.

Also, I've traveled to three separate states so far catching pokemon. Go take a field trip to a park on a weekend and catch some if your area sucks.
