In fact, having a veritable "multitude" of hobbies pretty much completely blanks out any demographic that has one interest in common with you, but does it on a high level. Because you sure as fuck aren't engaging in each one of your "multitude" of interests at a high level. Ain't nobody got time for that shit. That girl who loves football doesn't give a shit if you occasionally watch a football game once a month, when you have time to fit it into your busy schedule of juggling those multitudes.
Every single post you've made in this thread shows more and more just how clueless you are. The best advice I have for you is "grow up".

Having numerous hobbies and interests doesn't mean you can't be highly involved in a handful of them while only dabbling in others.

"Well I'm really into beer, I go to a few beer fests every year and visit a lot of the local breweries and brew pubs. I also love live music. I see as many shows as I can, mostly in NYC and Boston. I like to golf, actually I may be slightly addicted to golf. I visit a lot of friends on the weekends and take a lot of road trips, especially during the summer. I go on hikes on nice days at a couple of small mountains close by. I actually just started doing Yoga too, that shit kills right now. Friends of mine have a lot of bonfires when weather permits and they all have young kids so I don't get to see them much so I do that with them as often as I can. And in the winter I play a lot of video games because new england sucks or throw on my hockey skates and go to whatever frozen pond in the area I feel like."
This person sounds very unfocused. I feel like if someone started into this, my eyes would glaze over around the third or fourth sentence.

Also he/she sounds really boring.

You're a classic deflector. I can picture you putting your hands in your ears and yelling "NA NA NA NA I can't hear you!" when you finally start to realize you've backed yourself into a corner during an argument. You haven't learned how to have a normal, adult conversation which is fairly evident in how you respond. The funny thing is you've sounded like a staunch supporter of TRP in this thread every time you've offered an opinion. And yet now you're trying to refute one of its points. Make up your mind.

Fucking tattoos still have negative social stigma and you're going to bullshit me about video games being ok? You see insecurity, I see myself as being justifiably cautious where the alternative has very little upside. You still haven't answered my original question: what benefit is there to leading off about video games?

Your whole first paragraph is a mishmash of hypocrisy. I shouldn't care how people perceive my hobbies, but I should care how people perceive my looks and hygiene? But it's for me, not them, even though I'm trying to get a date?

You're conflating single-minded passion with bad conversationalist. The two are correlative, not causative. You also don't know what 'addiction' means.

I think I see the problem here. Though I didn't think Ithaca had such a different social paradigm than Middletown, CT. There's a social stigma attached to tattoos where you're from? Again, we aren't talking about in the work place Deathwing, we're talking about in the world of singles who are ready to mingle. Are there people who don't like tattoos? Sure. But there are people who don't like the frigan smell of mayonnaise too. You're grasping here. Especially when we're talking about women. You don't live in the bible belt. Tattoos are pussy bait in upstate NY, as well as much of the rest of the continental US. Really bad example my man. And they're also a great conversation starter.

Also, who said you should lead off with video games? Where did you get that idea? "Hi I'm Deathwing and I like video games". Yea, don't do that. It's just weird. But offering strange information for no apparent reason is strange regardless of circumstance. "Hi I'm Deathwing and I like tacos". Well alright then Deathwing, good to know.

My whole first paragraph is not a mishmash of hypocrisy to anyone who is a socially functional adult. And yea, that's a little harsh, but you seem completely disconnected from reality. I can't believe you're really trying to argue that if you shouldn't care what people think about what you enjoy doing then you also shouldn't care about how you fucking smell. Get a grip.

I didn't advocate leading off I just don't avoid the subject and will bring it up at an appropriate time, first date included. I don't have a ton of hobbies. I like to hike, lift, run, watch movies, read, and play games. I probably spend more on movies now than games at this point. I guess I could count travel but that's like 2-3 weeks a year since I prefer to go abroad and I work too damn much. Regardless, I can easily dabble in each proficiently. When I was golfing last year, I spent a lot on that...not so much this year. That was the one that got dropped with the new gf. I'll watch basketball in the winter some too and try to play badly.

If you genuinely think that sounds like a weird/boring/unfocused response to a question about your hobbies, you have some clear social issues. That's the way a normal, well-adjusted person would answer that question.

I keep my Video games on the down low. My assistant and one other guy in my office plays, we don't talk about it much other than the occasional /nod to our secret society.

My old boss said to me one day "I don't play games , I am not 5" Which was funny because he was the most immature person I knew over 40, but it stuck with me.

I don't hide shit because I am who I am (mmm spinach) but I don't volunteer it very often, I certainly don't answer "what did you do on the weekend" with "I killed my nemesis in SoM like 3 times and the beat stick of truth"

Yea, but that's only because you're fat, so you don't want to be a stereotype. Even though you are a stereotype.

Are you fat? I'm sorry, it was a joke

Back during the old school WoW days, I wouldn't even tell my IRL friends that played WoW that I also played WoW.

Khane, I think living in a university town may be influencing your views on if video games have social stigma or not. I live close by and they surely did 10-15 years ago, it's much less today but it still exists with some people in your average New England town even.

Personally when i stopped being addicted to EQ I really got into music and pretty much never let girls know my video gaming past ever existed. It seemed to work very well at the time, nowadays I don't hide it but I would never let people think thats a main/big part of my identity.

If you're going to act a retard, I don't see the point of debating with you further. I'm not trying to argue anything beyond maybe you should be a bit reserved about some of your habits when it comes to meeting new people. I happen to think video games is one of those habits. You don't.

Yeah, but the difference is that most tattoos are fucking retarded.
You don't think there's a not insignificant portion of our generation that thinks the same of video games?

If we're being honest. Being a good looking, healthy, funny, interesting guy with impeccable fashion sense and complete confidence in himself is the only thing affecting my opinion. I just dgaf. It doesn't really matter if I tell women I play video games or not. They aren't going anywhere.

I believe your opinions are a direct manifestation of your own insecurities. We have a fundamental difference of opinion, so I guess you're right. But I'm not the retard who doesn't understand why not caring about what people think about your hobbies is healthy whereas not giving a shit about what people think of your personal hygiene isn't. You're duty as an adult is to be a functioning member of a society. Your hygiene and health has a direct effect on those around you and the economy whereas you enjoying playing video games doesn't. But keep pretending I'm the retard.

OK that makes sense.

Looking back it's likely a huge part of why i hid that back then was insecurity. It's very possible I simply don't to hide anymore cause it's gone now. Video Games really have not been a big part of my identity in over a decade anyways.

I still find the gamer stereotype and culture pretty unappealing however and I suspect others feel that way also.

Here's something I haven't thought about until now, and I realize I'm probably being very unfair. Those of you who are gunshy about admitting video games as a hobby, did your family and close friends give you a hard time about video games? My family and friends never gave me shit about playing games, so I never felt the need to hide it.

Yes, my family pretty much hammered in the idea that video games are for children and losers. I remember going to buy ff7 and my mom asking the clerk when i would stop wasting my time on these games. No doubt this is a big reason why i would avoid bringing up gaming and others still do.

I think it's important to note that these game hating familys did and still do represent a large part of society. So i don't see whats wrong with people still wanting to not be looked down upon by them.
