That one's not too bad. I think I read a lot of them and enjoy them because my stepmom used to read all of his stuff. We used to take family trips in the minivan driving up to Wisconsin or out to Colorado, etc.

It'll be a 24-hour trip, and she used to read his novels with my sister and brother and my dad and I and the vehicle. Dad would be up late driving and we'd stay up just listening to her read.

I just ended up reading a bunch of his books because of that. I think I still have all of her copies of his novels that she had bought from used bookstores and what have you.

I was one of those things that we could always talk about, or watch the movies or miniseries together. Once I got older, I was able to suggest other books and stuff and we have great conversations his work his work.

She's the reason I've seen all of the horror movies as a kid. Every weekend you go to the video rental store, and pick out a scary movie.

Fuck, I really miss her., but thanks for making me remember that stuff. No bullshit.
I love to see horror bring family together. Thanks for sharing.

It screwed up because I remember asking her when my dad started dating her what's the scariest movie you've ever seen, and she said The Thing.

I know the first time I saw it as a kid it blew my mind, but Alien was still the scariest movie I ever watched when I was young.

You want to read the book, it's one of his best works. I read it every few years. There's a fantastic audio version available.

It's from the legendary era when King was doing copious amounts of Coke and drinking a case of tall boys every night. Then when he got on the wagon, became A faggy leftist.

Salem's Lot (the book) was from 1975. King was drinking heavily at the time, but it was before his coke days, which wouldn't start until a few years later. Salem's Lot was from the era where King's books had a super tight narratives and great pacing. Just the right amount of character building- enough to get you invested in the characters, but not so much that you have pages and pages of internal character dialog.

Don't get me wrong- King is such a good writer that even his 80's coke-era writing is extremely readable. I mean, It was classic coked up King and it was fantastic.

You basically have three different King eras:

Alcoholic King
Carrie
Salem's Lot
The Shining

The Stand
The Dead Zone
Firestarter
etc.

Cocaine King
Cujo
The Running Man
Christine
Pet Sematary
The Talisman
It
Misery
etc.

Sober King
Everything since roughly 1988

My personal favorite King era was alcoholic King, but frankly it's all great.

The best part of Cujo? He was so blasted that he didn't remember writing it.

If you're going to read King for the first time, here are my top 3 suggestions:
Eyes of the Dragon
The Stand
The Talisman

First time? Night Shift. If you don't find anything in there you like you can safely set aside his entire catalogue.

Oh, if you want a short story, then I suggest The Jaunt ( from Skeleton Crew ). He has a lot of great short stories, but that one really stuck with me for some reason. They're supposedly turning into a movie... we'll see.

Holy fuck, I started watching this after dinner this evening, and it's mind bottling...

I guess it was maybe supposed to be a pilot, I don't know, maybe 10 minutes in and it's just horrible. It just doesn't seem like a future film but definitely the beginning of a series, the name somewhere realized this was a stinker but they already spent the money, so they put it out as a future film?

I've watched other way cheaper horror films recently that, God damn, all of the words to describe it, it's just bad.

How the hell did anybody throw money at this abomination? I know Hollywood is creatively bankrupt and also retarded, but it's sooooo bad.

The book that got me into King was Christine. My grandmother had gotten the book as a gift, but my grandma didn't like it, cuz she was an old lady born in 1912. So she gave it to me and then I went to the library for more and then more and kept reading til I couldn't stand his repetitive tropes anymore.

I fucking hated it. They literally catered to the dumbest motherfuckers on Earth and explained the movie in the fucking movie like you would a retarded child. Hollywood thinks their audience are stupid and it's a repeated theme in almost every movie released now.
It's just as boring and unoriginal as the other extremely common trope of the "the movie is aware it's a movie" bullshit they do now in every god damn movie.

Anyway, yeah, this movie was fucking horrible.

I had some recommend The Outsider

based on the Stephen King book of the same name. I'd never read the book and thought it was decent. Starts stronger than it finishes (shocker) but I liked the acting and the characters.
I watch that maybe last year again and it's really good. It's pretty faithful to the novel, other than the Holly being black, but it's good.

That's essentially a one shot 8 or 10 episode miniseries, and it's worth your time. I remember the first time I watched it was when I was laid up I'm stupid pain meds and I didn't necessarily remember a lot of it, when I re watched it, I was very happy.

Probably one of his better adaptations in recent memory. No bullshit.

I don't remember if Mike Flanagan was involved with it but it's of that same caliber of work.

The books really good too, other than the ending but the series actually I believe has a better one.

Wow, I don't think I've watched anything this bad in a long time. I end up just skipping through portions of the movie because it was so bad.

Also found a funny that they made Mark a magician. But what the hell was I supposed to expect.

The whole ending was utterly retarded. I really think it was supposed to be a pilot but the executives realize it was just so horrible, it became a HBO exclusive movie.

Fucking hell... I may be watched 20 minutes of the whole thing because of my skipping, and it was nightmarish.
