BAE Systems has bought a 20% stake in a company developing a radical engine that could propel aircraft into space. BAE is paying ?20.6m for the stake in Reaction Engines, which is developing a hybrid rocket/jet engine called Sabre.

Reaction says the technology would allow the launch of satellites into space at a fraction of the current cost and allow passengers to fly anywhere in the world in four hours... The firms hope to have a ground-based test engine working by the end of this decade and begin unmanned test flights by 2025.

What thev've designed, built and tested so far has been verified by the European Space Agency and the U.S. air force, so it seems legit. Wikipedia link on the technology behind it:

DARPA to Begin Testing Satellite-Launching Fighter Jet This Yearhaven't seen anything about an actual test though, but I haven't looked too hard. Also the F-15 is the only aircraft to ever shoot down a satellite.

That's literally the ASAT launch scheme from Tom Clancy... I think it was Red Storm Rising? I mean down to the F-15 out of Eglin firing a rocket...

I won't consider EM drive fully confirmed until it works in space. There may be some sort of large scale systematic error in how the experiment is conducted that everyone is missing. Stupendous claims require stupendous observational verification, but clearly I'm an idiot for encouraging them to advance their experimental observations.

It's also surprising to see even nasa, one of the biggest sources of climate retardation starting to get more hesitant about pushing the global warming agenda. I think most clear minded scientists started seeing through how terribly that field of science was being conducted 10-15 years ago, though it still holds popular appeal with the ignorant masses/politicians for some reason.

What an amazing post.
Just because I see the mathematical and scientific justification and potential behind EM drive as being far more logical than fields as QE doesn't mean I won't hold it to the same, and perhaps even higher standards of verification. Observation trumps the desires of scientifically minded people ALWAYS.

I've been posting how much I think climate science is stupid since 2006 on foh. I am if nothing consistant in my views.

Yeah Paul March opened his yap again on NSF and now faux science outlets are publishing emdrive stuff.

EM Drive Developments - related to space flight applications - Thread 5

In the end it's just more good results from a lab that's already claimed thrust. I don't think it's really more confirmation of it working. What would be more confirmation is results from another lab. The Glenn Research Center (GRC) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory(JPL) are going to test it soon if they can increase the thrust enough.

The other thing that would add meaningful information is if they publish a peer reviewed paper in a prestigous journal. Their previous publication wasn't in a respected journal IIRC. Right now nobody has a mathematically sound explanation for the EMDrive thrust, just data saying there's something fucky going on.

I have an idea, maybe I'm old fashioned... strap a small one onto an inexpensive test satellite and send that fucker into orbit and see where it goes.
