Yes, the whole idea of a "channel" is pretty much an anachronism once we get to the point where we are just streaming everything on demand. It's hard to beat the efficiency of broadcast though. Sending the "Mad Men" file to everyone who wants to watch it when they want to watch it is much less efficient than just blasting it out to everyone at a set time.
Its certainly coming. Just the hardware savings (Roku type vs a Full DVR) and tech support stuff is worth the change. Add to that the provider now gains a ton more control over content, especially advertising, and its coming. Broadcast TV still probably has another 10 years but the future is going to be ondemand style.

I have absolutely no knowledge of the hardware and technologies behind this stuff, but I've always found it odd that your cable line is sending you 200+ crystal-clear HD channels of video all the time, constantly, yet streaming 1 HD video via the internet on that same cable line can bog down depending on the time of day and the source.
I don't know much about it either, but one of them is sending 1 stream down the line and 2 million people watching it vs. 2 million people requesting 2 million different files and you have to get each one to them.

I can't wait for Android L to come out with the Android TV. I currently use Windows Media Center with a cable card tuner but Microsoft has stopped development on it, so I'm hoping Android TV lives up the hype I've been reading.

@ Tarrant, finally set up in my new place.... 6mb down on my "up to 40mbs blazing fast line". So best bet is bitching at the local place for a tech? If a tech does nothing think I can get out of a fairly fresh contract because i'm getting 15% of advertised speed ( or at least give me the most basic level pricing since I sure aint getting premium.)

Are you getting 6mbps down or 6MB/s down?
Yeah, a lot of people don't understand the conversions. a "40Mbps" connection is going to max out at around 5 Megabytes per second download, in actual real-life usage. Goddamn bit to byte conversion. Always have to take advertised internet speeds and divide by 8.

1000Mbit Google Fiber is actually a max of 125 Megabytes per second download. So it actually takes 8 seconds to download a gigabyte file, not 1 second.

Yeah, a lot of people don't realize that ISPs advertise speeds in megaBITS. a "40Mbps" connection is going to max out at around 5 Megabytes per second download, in actual real-life usage. Goddamn bit to byte conversion. Always have to take advertised internet speeds and divide by 8.

6.15Mbps and .75 up via speedtest.net. 46 ping to whatever server.

Still working out how fast it feels, dont have time to launch any games and give it a good test. I know it's not handling updating steam games while watching video previews on steam, but that was fairly normal with cable.

So in laymans terms, I suppose that means I am getting what is advertised? Is that still dogshit next to comcast whatever their customer service crappyness?

If I didn't know how to access admin page (I sorta do), then I'm probably gonna not know what I'd be looking @ for SNR or bonding

Post your model. Generally, you want a page that details upstream/uplink and downstream/downlink information. If you can get that far, take a screenshot and post it here. But if either are bad, it will result in lots of dropped words.

If you're pulling them from speedtest.net then it's in Megabits, which is fairly slow.

You're not getting what is advertised, but I don't believe Comcast makes the claim that you ever will.

The always dreaded "Up to xxxMbps"

Well, we say "Up to 100Mbit" so technically 2Mbit is valid for that claim

It's century link dsl noodle, hence thinking comcast might be better because aside from random outages, I hadn't had much problems with them a few years ago.

Oh... DSL.. yikes.

I haven't had a Comcast outage in the 4 years that I've had them (personally, not my parents). I also get around 10-12MB/s (80-100Mbps) down on a good day.

I like everything about them except their shitty customer service and retarded fees.

You are probably just too far from the DSLAM to get higher than 6Mbps. DSL performance tapers very quickly over distance.

I've never even seen a company advertise any DSL at speeds up to 40Mbps. I don't think AT&T around here advertises more than like 6Mbps as their top tier of DSL

I've seen 12 and higher, even in small towns. But, you literally had to live across the street from the CO. They just did gigabit over 2 pair last week, but it was like up to 20 meters or some bullshit. Most DSLAMs are going to be "up to" 12Mbps within 1/2mile

Century Link advertises 20Mb here. I had them at this shit ass apartment back in the day and had terrible speeds. Tech told me all the equipment in the area was old and there was not shot at getting decent speeds. Took 10mins or more to reestablish a connection and it dropped often.
