You didn't say anything about not getting super ultra premium all inclusive insurance. Only an extra $50 per line per phone!

OK guys, looking for recommendation for my next phone. I currently have a Samsung GS4 on a Verizon Unlimited Data plan. I had been planning on getting the Note 5 later this month, but the leaks with some of the specs are leaving me underwhelmed. (no usb type-c, 3000mah battery, same exynos as gs6 not the 7422 updated version)

Opinions on alternate phones to look at on Verizon? Or should I just bite the bullet and deal with the GS6/Note 5 as the best choice.

I'm not in a super rush but the usb2 charging port is becoming somewhat unreliable in my phone, only certain cables stay tight and charge properly. I REALLY had my heart set on a phone with usb type c, but that doesn't seem to be a near term spec on new phones.

@brekk: If you can wait, Google's updated Nexus line should be coming out around the same time as the Note 5.

There is 2 versions of the Nexus 2015 being made: 1) Basically an updated Nexus 5 [made by LG] and 2) Basically an updated Nexus 6 [made by Huawei]

I'm likely going to be getting the Huawei and here are the probable specs:

Nexus 2015 - the Huawei version
  • 5.7-inch WQHD AMOLED display (2560 x 1440)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor (SD820 SoC - the newest processor)
  • USB Type-C connector
  • QuickCharge 2.0
  • 21-megapixel IMX230 sensor rear camera
  • Metal unibody design
  • Fingerprint reader

Expecting my Fi invite in the next couple weeks. I'll to either go with that when the next Nexus hits or give Windows Phone a shot for a cycle once the next round of them releases.

Just ready for a change from Verizon and/or waiting forever for updates.

The N6 is a decent phone, honestly don't care about cell phone releases anymore these days. As long as it plays netflix and load chrome, I'm good with it. It just has to have a decent screen size which the N6 has.

Which carrier did you move from to fi draegan? Comparison would be interesting once you have time with the new service.

Oh I know, I'd just use the latest and greatest as an impetus is all. Have to have the new shinies. Love the larger phones, coming from a Note 2 and 3 before going w/ battery life and the ability to edge upgrade to get my Turbo.

The 20 dollar access fee bullshit on smart phones is what really drives me nuts. Pay us so you can pay us!

That does seem a little better than the current deals. Right now I'm paying $80 a month for smartphone with 2GB of data, 400 min of talk, and no text plan. It sounds like I could get unlimited talk and text with 3GB of data for $65 now? I'm sure there will be some tax and fee bullshit that will get it back up to $80 but at least I would be getting more of everything. The $20 access fee and the $10 tethering fee are definitely bullshit, but it's nothing new I guess.

EDIT: Oh I forgot about the no more phone subsidies. I guess they are fucking us a bit after all. I wonder if that will bring down the price of Samsung/LG/HTC flagship phones to compete with things like the One+ or the Moto X/G.

Still glad I kept my unlimited plan I guess. I have it down under a 100 by cutting phone minutes (just don't use enough of them).

The edge program is fucking rolling car leases bullshit though. They are going to have to scale back flagships I think, a ton of people are going to have to go with B rated phones.

I have a feeling that people will just buy phones on time even though it is most likely a huge ripoff but most people are incapable of saving a few hundred bucks. I actually kind of prefer to pay cash for my phones if there are good devices available in the $3-400 range. I paid $400 for my Moto X on Cyber Monday and I really wouldn't mind doing that once every 12-18 months but $700 seems a little rough.

Edge is only a rolling lease if you swap your phone every 12 monthes. At 24 monthes it's paid off and yours to keep when you get a new one.

Yeah, but how much did you pay for it?

NM I looked it up Galaxy S6 Edge is $29.16 a month so in 24 months it will cost you $699.84 which is actually 15 cents less than buying it outright. I guess I was incorrectly assuming that Verizon was charging you interest to buy on time.

You're buying the device at retail, all Verizon is charging is service. Nothing has changed except simplification of the process/charges. Want that S6? It's going to cost $24.99 month and your access is $20 for a total of $55 + your Talk/Text and Data. The market is simply going 100% retail, there is no reason to buy a 2 year contract anymore.

That's only true if you think gigabytes really cost $10. They have to change to adapt to industry trends, they are basically removing $500 in subsidy over 2 years while giving away pennies in data use.

OK guys, so my previous post with questions about phone choices has changed with the Verizon announcement.

Do I get a GS6 to lock in my unlimited/450m/1000txt plan for 2 more years costing me 97 per month (that incl insurance on phone) or forfit my unlimited and switch to the 60 for 6 plan (60+20+25 for edge+8insurance) which ends up around 110.

I kind of feel like snagging a GS6 for 200 is a good deal now, especially if they decide to aggresively kill my unlimited data in the future allowing me to avoid an ETF and switch to a different plan anyways.
