What exactly is rooting? And do I need to download the one that is $4 or is there a free one? Not that I'd mind spending thr $4 to get the adaway stuff since these adds are insane
Adaway is free. Need root.

Root is super user, Linux version of windows admin but more powerful.

Read up on XDA developers. I can help you if you get stuck but you need to read and research on your own a bit to educate yourself on the process. It's not hard you just have to follow instructions.

Rooting is the process of unlocking "superuser" permission on your phone. Basically it gives you access to customize your phone in ways that a non-rooted phone cannot.

I wouldn't buy anything from the app store w/r/t rooting until you've done a bit of research on it first. Some models (such as the droid turbo, which i mentioned above) cannot be rooted at all (at least, currently). The older your phone is, the more likely it is that there are working root methods to support it.

I would recommend doing a google search for "xda developers" and your device. That will most likely get you to the "development" page for your device, in which you can find files and instructions on rooting. Do not be hasty--you can potentially damage your phone if you aren't careful, although I've never had any issues.
Good points here.

Calbiyum, what carrier are you on? Looks like the Verizon v10 isn't rootable.

RIP Google Nexus LG 4. Spilled some water (not a lot!) and now it won't boot up. I took it apart, had a little bit of water in it and dried it and put it together and still won't boot. I am now letting it dry out for the day and will try it again tongiht but it doesn't look good.

What's a good replacement for it? Some midrange phone I can buy outright without much cost and use on my $30 a month TMobile plan.

Since you were on a Nexus anyway and you are price conscious I don't see how you could go wrong with a Nexus 5X. $379 new (for the 16 GB version) and it's probably one of the best phones out right now. Will cost another $50 to go up to the 32GB version which would probably be advisable.

Best Buy black Friday ads show $250 gift card when you activate a Samsung phone. Might be time to finally get my wife on a new phone and ditch her iPhone.

On a related note, a while back I talked about group texts being terrible between Android and iPhone. Many times the Android user just doesn't get them. Well, it was discounted that it's fine and it was old Android OS and/or old phone. Sounded legit because the Android phones in question were old.

I'm back to report on a Note 5, I rarely ever get group texts from iPhone users which is pretty much my entire family. So it's gotta be something else? I'm gonna try texting all my family individually so that maybe it switches off iMessage since I recently switched back to Android.

I have a 6P and also have played with a 5X. Even though I'm glad I got the 6P I would have had zero regrets going with a 5X. If you are on Android I think the Nexus phones are no brainers right now. They perform like high end devices but are priced like mid-range. As an overall value they can't be beat.

You should also look into Project Fi for your cell service. Value will depend on your data usage but if you keep it around 1gb per month it will cost the same as your current T-Mobile bill but you get built in automatic switching between Wi-Fi calling, T-Mobile's network & Sprint's network. Oh, and if you use less than 1gb a month you'll get a refund for the data you don't use. Go over 1gb a month, no big deal they'll charge you the same pro-rated price for whatever extra you use.

Can confirm, 5X is a great phone. The wife is enjoying her so far. I was going to get the 5X for myself as well but got the 6P. It was slightly slimmer than my 6 and should have less thumb stretching problems which was my only real gripe with that large of a phone.

They probably have you as an iMessage contact on their phones, yes, and as long as that's the case, you will never get their texts until one of two things happens:

1. They all remove your contact history/info and text you again,

2. You de-list yourself from iMessage. Go here:Deregister iMessage: Frequently Asked Questions - Apple Support

5x is a great device. You'll be more than happy my wife loves hers and I'd be happy with it as well as my device.

Holy shit the fingerprint sensor on the 6P is awesome. I've always wanted at least a little security to open my phone but hate having to type in a pin or swipe a pattern. The fingerprint thing is amazing.

Just tried this, and it says my phone number isn't registered with iMessage, so apparently that's not the problem. Back to the drawing board!

Anyone have a preferred device selling site? I was looking at putting up my Nexus 6 on Swappa potentially to try and recoup some of the new device. I have not used any of those sites in general though. Needing a new SIM pretty much sealed the deal on dumping the 6 as a spare. Might be able to get ~$250 -$300 which would be over half of what I bought it for when it was on sale.

Just got a Nexus 6P to replace my 2014 Moto X and I'm loving every minute of it. Did some low light photo comparisons with it versus my wife's iPhone 6S and we both agreed the 6P did a better job, so that was nice.

My $30/mo. T-Mobile plan just renewed but as soon as this month is up I'm moving over to Project Fi as well.
