I'm back to report on a Note 5, I rarely ever get group texts from iPhone users which is pretty much my entire family. So it's gotta be something else? I'm gonna try texting all my family individually so that maybe it switches off iMessage since I recently switched back to Android.

If you already removed your number from imessage/turned off, then the problem is not on your end but everyone else's. Anyone that has a iPhone probably has old texts that you have sent under imessage. If they try to use those old texts groups their phone will automatically assume you are still using imessage which you are never going to receive the texts. So all they have to do is clear out all the old texts and regular texts should then go through.
I just switched from iPhone to Android and that's what I advised everyone to do. I turned off imessage, deleted all texts and had friends and family do the same. I haven't had any issues yet

So can I just buy one and replace the sim card in it and go or do I need to go suck TMobile's dick?

To get the $30 a month thing I literally couldn't get it done at the tmobile store, I had to go to walmart and have them do it or something:

You'll need a nano sim. You can cut your micro down with this
Amazon.com: #1 Nano Sim Card Cutter, Aerb Mini /Standard Accessories

Or get a nano sim from Walmart assuming that is possible. The 5x is unlocked when you pop the sim in it will provision and work on any carrier. If there are issues you can adjust the apn settings but it shouldn't be necessary.

That's pretty cool that I can just get a stapler and cut down my sim card. The future is here.

I'm on that same T-Mobile plan and have used different sim cards with no impact to my plan. Although cutting one down to size works too.

one last try on fixing my phone, it's on pieces and getting heat soaked with my heat gun. Chance of success: 5%.

Also I don't think I'll be able to recover any data if this doesn't work. RIP pics.

Doesn't Google have all your shit backed up? I'm pretty sure if I died tomorrow Google could download a copy of my entire consciousnesses into a clone body...

Looks like it's being sold by a reseller who bought them from Google Play just like you. Probably trying to sell a bunch if/when they went oos at Google, or to people who don't know better.

You should put that shit on Google Photos and make them private. Unlimited / Free.

Google photos default to private unless you change it and it's unlimited storage as long as they are 15 MP or smaller, otherwise they use your Google Drive storage.

With Marshmallow finally introducing app backups and the various other backup/photo sync services, a properly set up phone dying usually won't lose you much data. The new backup system sadly isn't a complete backup solution though, as it only backs up apps that are updated to support the newest API and devs can disallow backups if they want to. I would kill for Google to implement a proper full phone backup, as right now you still have to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery for that.

Is there a reason not to use Google's various backup features if you have a NAS that can do that same, just not quite as well integrated?

Obviously, storage size is a difference, Google Drive has 15GB and my NAS has 3TB, but I haven't come close to using the 15GB unless I greatly widen the scope of what I want backed up.

Only other difference would be paranoia, so to speak. If they're both functionally similar, is "I don't want Google to see/have this" a good enough reason?

The answer for me is "Because I'm a dumb luddite" basically. Or rather, "I've been storing pictures locally on my computers for decades and this is the first storage device that I can't remove.".

My wife has that, I don't really like it but maybe I'll get it.
Is it the aesthetics you don't like? Me, personally, I don't really give two shits what the phone looks like. What I like about it so much is these cases fit the phones perfectly - there's not slop between the case and the phone. And the rubber/grips on it help prevent it from sliding around on most surfaces which is super nice.
