The image is pretty clear that United have spent poorly, overspent in areas and bought in odd areas.
As for "Net" - consider that United haven't sold anyone above ?6.5m since 2007 (excluding Ronaldo). Buying the likes of Berbatov for ?30m and moving him on for ?5m for example. Class player though, but a strange purchase at the time (last minute deal, dead line day, in an area of the pitch not needing much reinvestment that had Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo).
Mata is a great player, but that ?37m odd spent on an area where they already had brought in Kagawa whilst having 4 strikers to play with, with also Rooney being deployable there as well as Fellaini...
Fellaini, again - decent player (at least for Everton & Belgium), his better position is arguably coming forward to link up play. Spending ?30m when he could have been gotten a week prior for ?25m due to the buy out clause was a total joke, a clear panic buy.
Zaha, the last buy under SAF - a player perhaps good for potential hasn't been seen since given his performances. But they spent ?10m there, an odd area of the pitch to reinvest in given the teams impending defensive exodus.
Shaw - again a similar deal for an 18 year old potential future star/long staying player - to be fair they need a left sided defender but to spend ?30m is strange.
I'm not saying I'm against having Mata or Shaw, but ?60m could maybe have had you 2 defenders and a midfielder.
Strange buys, panic buys, over valued buys... what's going on then? Well, as ever, GLAZERS! But I don't know. SAF was always very mute on the subject. "They let me buy who I want!". "I have the Ronaldo money in the bank!". Please. Now we see the same again from Woodward, who's parroting lines like "?200m warchest", "can afford to break transfer records", etc.
Actually, Van Gaal may be the only man on the planet, in the right place, to call them out if the club is just intent in throwing money around in the wrong areas and not pursuing the targets HE's interested in.
Saying that, we have almost confirmation about the defender Rojo (played well for Argentina in the World Cup) - at a decent price (?15m?). Oh well, 1 down, another 4 at least to go before the weeks up. Come in, top that fucking picture on spending!
