Caught an early 9am showing. I liked it. Thought the movie fit the character very well. A fun action flick - exactly what a movie based around Solo should be. You guys are also so predictable. Walking back from the theater I knew you neckbeards were going to complain about SJW shit and here we are. How do you guys enjoy anything at all? Y'all starting to sound like conspiracy theorists. Any time a white dude isn't the hero you get your jowls in a tussle. Act like SJWs get offended so easily but you guys are getting worse.
The young girl leading the rebellion thing though was pretty lame. Han at the start of New Hope wouldn't have done the "right thing". Other than that I thought it was good. I think some of you are expecting high brow film. I don't think you remember how bad the original Star Wars were - objectively speaking as a highfalutin film cinema critic would.
Funny, most of us
loved Mad Max. Personally that was one of my favorite movies ever, despite a woman clearly being the main character and Max being her sidekick. How do you explain that, Alex? The white male main character was replaced, and it was a woman's story, and yet no one bitched. Weird eh? Almost like the problems people here cite are specific, and often explicit (With writers/directors overtly stating their goals), and often have very little to do with the ideology in question, and everything to do with how the focus is on that ideology BEFORE the work someone is supposed to be doing (Like writing a good story).
I always love this defense though "If you react to people with clear, explicit agendas, you become the same as them speaking about nebulous, invisible things!!". No one here is railing against "systemic" bullshit that you can't name--there are SPECIFIC grievances and statements/actions from SPECIFIC people that illustrate an ideological agenda, and even that agenda typically is not the forefront of complaints, its how the bedrock stuff SUFFERS due to the pursuit of that agenda by these idiots (Again, an example--no part of Rey is bad, because, oh gosh, can't have a woman be flawed!) And its not hard to connect the dots as to why with explicit statements and actions by the people in charge.
Kathleen Kennedy founded the group in 2012 when she succeeded George Lucas as president of Lucasfilm, putting Kiri Hart, a former film and TV writer, in charge of the unit. Ms. Hart’s first move was to make the story group entirely female, starting with Rayne Roberts and Carrie Beck.
“As a writer I was very hungry to create female characters who felt real, and I was interested in telling stories from an outsider’s perspective,” Ms. Hart said, recalling Hollywood in the early 2000s. “There wasn’t a lot of receptivity to the things I really wanted to write about at the time. I think there is increasing openness to those things now, which makes me really hopeful.”
It's not about a white male not being the main character at all. Its about the bad writing, and the terrible story telling--and the evidence from OUTSIDE the movie that illustrates a majority of the concern was NOT to tell a good story, to convey an ideological position. And the story clearly suffered, greatly, as a result of that. (And it doesn't NEED to, as said, the female empowerment symbolism in mad max was pretty overt--but they told a good story, so people didn't give a shit. Furiousa was also flawed, she lost her fight to Max, she rages at the other women, she despaired and then overcame--she was fucking awesome. The original star wars also had some pretty obtuse symbolism with Nazism, but again, it was wrapped in a great story so it didn't matter.) However, in this case they didn't make a great story, or even a good one. So them focusing on trying to pimp their ideological views while they can't get the basic structure of entertainment down? Just comes across as cheap propaganda.
And lets be real here, Alex. It was pretty ham fisted, wasn't it? The white male hero from the original movies, whose defining strength was literally hope--was turned into a cowardly, pessimistic asshole who was so bereft of hope he'd become a nihilist. The other white male is evil, and regularly devolves into rages where he hurts people around him, oh and of course it was the original white males insecurity (Luke) which drove him to be that way. Meanwhile the MC has zero flaws, zero--didn't need anyone to teach her anything, and instead was simply amazing at everything within a day of learning it. It's ridiculous, and I think you know it. I get it, its rough to watch your childhood get shit on. But it's not like people are seeing microaggressions or some other lunacy that has no specific examples. The writers and staff at Lucas have explicitly stated their intentions, and their work shows a clear emphasis on the WRONG things if they want to make a compelling story. I don't go to church because I don't want to be preached at--why the fuck would I go to a movie for it?
