He had a number of major facts wrong. 64 bit precision is probably the biggest.

This is from around mid to early May 2013:

We are using a combination of fixed and floating point for the solar system. Essentially the floating point will handle 4-16km square areas (well within the range of floating point) and fixed point for the area position...
- Chris Roberts

Ok so that establishes how they first viewed the problem and one stop-gap solution.

Lets fast forward a bit to Oct 11 2014. During the Live Stream Chris mentioned and showed some slides indicating a move to 64 bit precision. This is the first official mention of it that I can find or clearly remember myself.

I can see where the confusion comes from because at this point they played coy for months and only rarely talking about it during 10FTC and a few other instances but basically saying it's something far off.

I can't find the date for it but I recall Ben saying back in 2014, if I'm not mistaken, how their programmers they kept hiring to do the 64 bit precision kept getting poached by EA. I think the longest one lasted something like 3 weeks. EA apparently kept poaching their top engine programmer from Austin. Austin has a good number of talent for game design but as a consequence it's difficult to compete with a company like EA that pays up to 3x as much for top talent.

Fast forward to this past Summer. 64 bit conversion is announced as completed by the Frankfurt office.

And just a few weeks back Chris mentions in passing that the team from Germany has been working on the 64 bit conversion since they staffed up in late 2014 after the Crytek layoffs.

So there you go. That hardly paints a picture of a frantic change done mid production with no prior planning. It's more like a series of unfortunate events and not being able to or willing to pay for top shelf staff to convert the engine earlier.

Lets hope they keep their German staff warm and fuzzy.

Why do I get such a blackwulf vibe from Variise.

Ah, 186 posts out of 209 all in this thread.. Sounds like a PR job.

I respect the author of the article for being upfront about getting publicity from it. All the other stuff in there I have no fucking idea, well except for calling Derek Smart a hero of his. He has to lose some cred for that.

What facts were wrong? How the did you even get a fleeting impression the dude writing that blog post was painting a "picture of a frantic change done mid production with no prior planning."

Fanboys keep citing old quotes point out they've planned 64 bit engine all along. Yeah, that's the point, their entire game depends on it and it's absolutely project critical, so the fact it was a very late announcement was a 'wtf' moment for people. As you said yourself, they've had to go back and try convert and implement a bunch of stuff that was already built and designed. Had they cracked the 64bit problem first, they would have saved a lot of time, resources, and doubts, and good project management dictates that's the biggest risk so you tackle that first, not spend tens of millions and hope the single biggest potential threat to the project's survival just comes along and works out fine along the way.

This all reminds me when people were excited for Vanguard. They'd promised a seamless world. They'd promised and spend resources on a bunch of systems and designs already. The game was going to be awesome. You could even log in and play with some of the systems! Oh, only problem is the game engine was shit, and years into development they were finally happily announcing that this time they were sure they'd finally got the engine stable and working!

Isn't the lesson everyone should have learned from WoW is first master the tech, then open up 'full on development mode.' So, yeah, there are red flags because SC has been in pretty heavy development and suddenly they announce they've almost got engine and fundamental hurdle to the game finally working.

See also: dumb fucking fanboys flaming the author because he mentioned they're design seems dependent on loading screens, but according to fanboys SC won't have loading screens, so the author is obviously and idiot because, duh, SC will have auto-piloted entry-sequences where the game is, get this, loading in the background, but it's not a loading screen because you can run around your ship and it doesn't say 'loading... please wait.' Face palm worthy fanboism in that comments section.

Was totally going to neg you PSD (and Ut too) for your bitch fight in the other thread but then you posted the precise rebuttal I was going to post to Variise so you get a taco instead.

Variise is the Blackwulf of this thread and that's okay. At least he's the fanboy for SC and not ESO. Blackwulf ended up finally turning his back on ESO after release, but I think SC will pull off a good game so Variise is safe from that!

Every game has its fanboys. There have been worse.
Uhh, no, there really hasn't. I have never seen fanboys as cult like as SC fanboys. They are by far the most insane I have ever seen.

Also, I never really understood why people placed so much importance on loading screens. They aren't that big of a deal. If a loading screen for a few seconds ruins your immersion, the game isn't the failure, you are.

You know, I've been doing forums for a long time. I've never felt the need to search someone's post history. If someone posted something I didn't like or agree with, I'd reply to it, and that would be the extent of my interaction. Is your beef with Variise that what he says is wrong, or that he doesn't frequent all the forum threads that you think he should? I enjoy reading what the people on this forum think about various MMOs, but, of all the threads on the front page, only SC interests me enough to post occasionally. Does that make me a bad Rerolled citizen? I rarely look at the "other games" forum, and I never look at any of the non game related forums. If I want to talk politics or look for dirty pictures, I've got Reddit. I know it's in vogue to hate on Reddit, and if I said that on SA or 4chan, I'd get flamed to death, but I'm sure here, in the mature Rerolled ecosystem, I'll simply garner a few mild negative Tuconets.

It takes 1 second to click on the button that shows who has posted in this thread.

I think the point is that his post was bullshit fanboy drivel from someone recognized to only really post in this one thread, and then posting posts bullshit fanboy drivel. Sometimes it doesn't take hiring a PI to see the pattern.

Nah, Blackwulf, you're not a bad rerolled citizen for not posting in enough threads. More that you started out by posting primarily in the ESO thread, and with a lot of bullshit fanboy drivel.

See how it works, now?

The truth is that a large minority of posters are secluded to a narrow subset of threads over a given period of time. Posters who post in more than 1 forum in a given week aren't universal.

And it's not a bad thing if someone only posts in one thread unless that person has ulterior motives. Ex: A shill or a hater who bounces around on 20+ social sites posting basically the same bullshit. At that point they're just advertising rather than providing information. There is zero evidence to suggest that Variise is one of those people and not just someone who is very excited and enthusiast (and naive) about an upcoming game.

I just hope you are getting paid Variise, a job is a job :p And it's not some self imposed PR work you are doing, like the usual SC fanatics I run across(and SC has produced a crazy fanatical cult following).

Variise isn't a shill; he is a passionate supporter. I can't blame him; I wish I had that optimism. We're all hoping an MMO comes out that makes us say "wow" again, Variise just happens to be heavily invested in a long-shot.
