2 years seems on-track for shipping episode one of SQ42 and getting the beta PU up with 3-5 star systems.
the $6.000.000 stretch goal is as follows; "Star Citizen will launch with 100 star systems." (Stretch Goals - Roberts Space Industries) so a beta launch with only 3-5 systems seems to be a bit short of the goal to me.

While looking into that, I discovered that they seperate SQ42 and Star Citizen as two seperate things, i.e. its not one game (guess I am very very late to the party regarding this!). But... if I backed SC and get SQ42 in 2 years, when are they planning to release;

People need to quit worrying so much. Play what's available if you think it's fun. Ask for a refund if you feel like you're being fucked over. If you've only funded an amount that doesn't impact you on a daily basis, then just watch the development hopefully and glean some entertainment from the process. If you've funded an amount that is making your life uncomfortable, or giving you feelings of guilt, then you need more help than the Rerolled forums can provide.

So, just out of curiosity, since they fully funded on Kickstarter, and they do not supply 100 systems as stated they would for those particular backers, can kickstarter folks get their money back?

TLDR is that they have a specific build for SQ42. That build is what we will be playing when it goes "gold". However that build will have tie ins to the PU build at several stages but that's trivial. It's things like unlocking multiplayer co-op battles and historical battles you can play offline or with friends/guildies anytime such as a major battle you play in SQ42. Things like your character will get saved and loaded into the PU. Major decisions you make that will result in the life or death of crew you meet along the way in SQ42, even enemies, will be saved and exported. So those are the tie ins. You can quit SQ42 for a time and come back to it later and those decisions will have impact in what you see in the PU but the PU is its own build.

Now having said all this they share everything in terms of assets, lighting, characters, NPCs, locations, ships, weapons, animations you name it.

What you might see in SQ42 is NPCs operating a mining station but you yourself cannot go and mine and get something out of it other than waste time or explore. But in the PU build mining will be fully fleshed out and you get something out of it even if you only have a very limited mining ship and equipment.

If you played SWTOR The Fallen Empire you can get a sense of how they tie the builds together as the concept is very similar.

So while it's "not one game" it really is. They are the same game except in SQ42 they won't let you fuck off and do trading missions, mining and exploration unless it happens to be part of the storyline somehow.

The PU on the other hand is everything turned on but it won't have as detailed/scripted missions to the same scale as SQ42. That's what SQ42 is for. That's where the "Mission Disks" go later when they complete the main campaign.

Yeah and I doubt the median would be much higher than that. In fact I'd bet the median is closer to $60.
Yes, I want to see how close it is to $40, or whatever the normal person purchase price is. There is a gigantic fucking chasm on the scale of normal to Variise. Plus I just like laughing at numbers.

I said beta PU, not launch PU.

I find the drama surrounding this game far more interesting than the promise of an immersive space sim.

Thank you for that, but I guess my question is how they plan to release it. Will SQ42 come before SC? That would mean the "game" is even more off track regarding release date (remember, the whole game was estimated for a release nov 2014 once upon a time). Just releasing SQ42 would have been fine with me if co-op was still in it, but since its not I would like to have the game where I can play with my friends as promised (i.e. SC).

If they deliver SC+SQ42 at the same time its fine.

And yeah, I understand an estimate is just that, but I find it fun to see how they will handle the whole "if not delivered within 12 months from nov 2014, we will give you a run-down on the financials as to why this has not happened". My thoughts on it is; a) the guy who put that idiocy into the TOS is no longer with the company and b) they will just silence it to death.

As Barraco Bisi states, the drama around this game is currently way more fun then the game itself at this point

The fact they are still getting money from their crowdfunding and the average pledge is under $100 tells me people are happy with the direction of their development. So your analogy fails.
So we should conclude that since people spend money on gym memberships, but 67% of them go totally unused, those people are totally are satisfied with how they look? People drop literally billions and billions of dollars every year on shit they don't need.. hell even shit they don't want because marketing or peer pressure or just plain stupidity lead them to it, that does not in any way diminish that they ended up with something less satisfied for it in the end.

People need to quit worrying so much. Play what's available if you think it's fun. Ask for a refund if you feel like you're being fucked over. Your suggestion is perfectly reasonable which has no place here. This is the land of fighting over too much brown, we do not take kindly to your type here

All these videos I keep seeing are very impressive. How much will the supercomputer cost that will run all that shit happening at the same time?

Runs well on a 1600ish dollar gaming rig right now. In 2 years or so when we start seeing something resembling the live PU, it will probably run great on 1000 dollar gaming rig, given advances in GPU hardware.

EQ2 thought the same so my reservations remain. Right now all they have is arenas which can be tightly controlled as far as map design to minimize impact on PCs. It remains to be seen if they can keep it running so smoothly in the less controlled PTU. Also, are those ship explosions (as well as the localized damage models they've shown off) currently in their arena game? I hate arena modes with a passion so I've genuinely not seen if it is or not.
