Yeah right off the bat, Troi Marries Riker when it should have been Worf according to one of the best TNG 2-part episodes, but by that standard they also destroyed the Enterprise Riker was supposed to command a movie or 2 back anyway.

By the time VI rolled around both those actresses would have commanded a much higher salary. BTW, I disagree that the last good Trek was IV, I think VI was really great for a final look at the legacy of the cast. It also helps that it was incredibly timely, being released weeks before the fall of the Soviet Union.Also
Both Kristy Alley and Robin Curtis nailed it when playing Lt. Savik. For some odd reason I have kept thinking Savik betrayed the Federation in The Undiscovered country but that was a different Vulcan but in looking up Savik I read that it was originally intended that the the conspirator was Savik but they altered that story which is sad because I feel that someone who had been so close to Spock could could have only made a more interesting story. I think I just assumed Female Vulcan = Savik because they all look alike to me

Nemesis update - Oh god! Is their Bridge really like 10 feet from the hull? do they understand that the view screen is not just a really thick window?
You don't need to cast the same actors for the same character, suspension of disbelief allows for cast swapping when needed as long as they say "this person is Savik now" I think the story was worse off for the rewrite, I didn't care who played the part as long as they were good
The only circumstance that they would have needed to get Christie Alley specifically to play Savik was in an episode of TNG in which they had cast Kelsey Grammer, it was a non speaking role and she WAS asking for way too much money for a joke appearance, possibally because Kelsey Grammer's career was skyrocketing and hers was.... something.
Actually, after reading Memory Alpha and a few other sources it turns out it was a bit more complicated. Roddenberry didn't want to have Saavik turn traitor because it wasn't "in character" while Meyer felt that as the creator of the character they should go ahead. Roddenberry eventually got his way, and the role turned into Valeris, played by Kim Cattrall, who had auditioned for Saavik originally. Rodenberry was really upset at a lot of the militarism and content of VI it seems, and died 2 days after seeing a reel. In a lot of ways it did not follow the original ideals of Trek at all, because it showed the good guys being incredibly racist. Uhura was supposed to say the line "Guess who's coming to dinner?" instead of Chekov, but Nichols refused to do it.
I am glad that I agree with the guy who made the best movies and not the hack writer. I feel that "Roddenberry didn't want to have Saavik turn traitor because it wasn't "in character" " is the exact reason the story would have been better. The reasons for betrayal could have stayed exactly the same but the weight of the betrayal would have been felt more because it came from an unlikely source. Watch Code Geass for a great example of an out of character moment, you ill know it when you see it.
This is the same reason Joss Wheeden will kill off a fan favorite, it causes controversy and the audience wakes the fuck up. Having just seen Data try to do his best Wrath of Khan Spock impression with the last moment rescue and self sacrifice of Picard I just was not moved by it. It just was not as moving as the death of Wash, Kamina or even Titus (A.K.A. The Sudden and Unexpected, The Last Stand, and The Hard Choice). They had weakened the sacrifice of Data by screwing with continuity and giving him a third brother which of course looks exactly like him too. When Spock died nobody knew what the hell would happen, to the audience until 3 came out he was dead, period.
I could not watch Gurren Lagann for about 2 days after that.

yes, it was always a retarded design fallancy that made absolute no sense. Battlestar Galactica had it right, with the bridge deep inside the this hull. Star Trek ? nope. They are in the top, most exposed area of the ship. Not only them tho, also Klingons have it in the front nose of the ship for no reason
the first pic im linking below show you exactly where the bridge is in the Enterprise-D (TNG serie ship). On the second pic you can see how this stupid design is presen in any shipclass tho. Including the new Sovereign class you see in the last 3 TNG movies
