Mark Hamil didn't appear to be a badass originally either. Boyega looks great in the trailers and I loved the clip about his reaction to viewing the trailer himself.

Stop finding reasons to nitpick. Outside of any evidence that it was a political pick, no reason to get upset about it. Even if it was, lets give it a shot. If they had picked a white guy, we would have SJW's upset. Don't be the mirror to that stupidity.

Also, holy shit Siddar. Take a seat, you sound fucking crazy.

Even if it was 100% political and Disney straight up sent a memo saying "We need a black guy, a girl, and a muppet", unless it makes the story worse, who cares?

Well, I don't think it's the fact alone that he's black. For instance, I felt that Samuel Jackson rocked as Windu, and if he hadn't played that role and was instead starring as the "new" main protoganist in this Star Wars I don't think I'd be feeling the same way. The guy they got to play this role is a nobody, looks as "black" as you can possibly get, and doesn't seem to be particularly badass. It just kinda has this "PC feel" around the whole selection process.
No that's your racist ass confirmation bias. Not everything in the world is predicated on your myopic rerolled argumentum ad infinitum experience.

Not sure if you are responding to me, but that is pretty much what I was trying to say.

The only complaint I would have is that if it is a political pick, it is putting someone that is possibly less qualified or less fit to the role. Complaining about it before we see the movie though, seems silly. We have no idea how good he is atm or not, other than the trailer which looks good.

Basically, stop complaining about his race. Doing that makes you sound as silly as the SJW complaining if they had picked a white guy.

Ok honey, don't mind my "racist ass" passing through. I've seen the light and will be releasing the slaves off my plantation immediately as reparations for my heretical comments.

All I'm saying is that it feels like a contrived choice.. I have no doubt that the movie will be great and I for one will be lined up for tickets the moment they can be had..

I believe the point trying to be made is this: if you're going for a badass feel and cast someone like Jet Li you are able to buy into it easier, you know him and he's built a career around what he does. Now the same could be said for Jackie Chan but his characters are for a completely different feel. Disney did neither of those. The feels are real.

The cynic in me thinks that this is going to be a probably weaker rehash of Episode IV. Rey is the new Luke and Luke is the new Obi Wan, Kylo is the new Vader, Starkiller the new Death Star etc. The truth is that it is hard to go away from that formula. I actually like that they cast a girl as the protagonist, not so sure about Kylo Ren as the villain, i hope there is a bigger baddie to deal with in the next movies. You can't have your main antagonist be called Kylo and played by Adam Driver, come on. It's easy to get excited by the trailer, but then again you can set shit to that score and still get amazed.

And the kid in me of course can't wait.

Why wasn't siddar nominated to the asshat award?

And why are people still debating the race/vender issue? I really wonder the reaction in 1979 with Alien or in 1984 with Terminator. Maybe there was no crying about a female being the hero

It's not politics, it's fucking business. The 'best person for the job' is the one who brings in the most revenue while executing the role to an acceptable degree. Expanding the market is the best way to do that. They already know they have all the white boy money in North America. If they can get some homeboy and chick money don't you think they're gonna do that? It's not about being 'PC', and anyone who thinks that is fucking retarded.

Do you honestly think that the villain himself wasn't a selection based on female appeal? The guy was the boyfriend in Girls for fucks sake. They basically picked this generation's 'Aiden' from Sex and the City. The casting in this film is extremely well calculated for what they are trying to achieve.

Get a god damned grip.

30% of your population is black, you should be prepared for 30% black protagonists. 50% of the population is female so you should also expect 50% female protagonists. Guess what? The film has 1 black guy, 1 white guy and 1 white girl as the new leads... seems reasonable. Everything we have seen shows that these two are perfectly acceptable in those roles so let's reserve judgement until we actually see them in action. I don't get the problem other than racism.

Star Wars has history here with Lando being an awesome character and a normal person, unlike the majority of black characters in movies who seem to be specifically black shitty comedy relief. Is it not in your interests to have social cohesion with black people and women being Star Wars nerds too? "PC" would be putting loads of random unexplained "diversity" into an established setting like Lord of the Rings which is based on 100% white male Saxon/Scandinavian mythology and would break immersion. Star Wars surely has planets of black people?

I would assume advanced civilizations like the ones in Star Trek would have solved their black problem already.

Not sure it could be put in better words than this. Planet of the apes sloping neanderthal brow is also traumatising. Surely in a futuristic setting the off the boat genetics would have been watered down by now. Ruins all the immersion of the movie.

Which country? The US is ~10% black. ~12% if you count black latinos, which most demographers wouldn't.

If you've never been to the US and you've only watched our media, I don't blame you for thinking that because minorities ARE historically over-represented in film, television and theater since the early days of vaudeville.

They're still over-represented now:

I don't think you understand your own graph. Are you trolling? Minority isn't just blacks. The non-white population in the US is greater than even the highest percentage there (15.4%). Even if you counted every Hispanic as white, which is pretty bogus for a lot of reason, the minority percentage is still bigger than those minority percentages in your graphs.

Also, look at this Nielsen page:Newswire | Popcorn People: Profiles of the U.S. Moviegoer Audience | Nielsen

Moviegoer-Demo-Race-Ethnicity.jpg

Combine those viewing habits with the actual representation and there's easily a 20-25% gap.

Even if you don't think viewing demographcis is more important than country demographics (which I think for obvious reasons it should be, at least from a company's financial perspective): "Whites (including Hispanics who identified as White) constitute the majority, with a total of about 245,532,000, or 77.7% of the population as of 2013. Non-Hispanic Whites totaled about 197,816,000, or 62.6% of the U.S. population."

So, yeah, don't know what you're talking about.

We weren't talking about moviegoers AT ALL, so noone knew about that till you strawmanned it up. We're talking about roles in film and media.

That last graph was for LEAD ACTORS as in the Denzels and Wesley Snipeses enriching and diversifying our culture. Which proportion of that "minority" pie do you think go to Ensign Sulu or Cheech?

As far as black roles yeah, they REMAIN overrepresented in film relative to the 10% black population:

And it's more or less the same in broadcast and slightly more on the stage.
