Please stop saying this wasn't bad, every fucking scene has a dumb JJ one-upmanship of previously shown Star Wars shit because that's all the fucking hack knows how to do.

Lightspeed skipping happens in the first fucking 10 minutes, that's the dumbest shit I've seen since Kahn teleported himself to fucking Qo'noS from Earth.

The entire thing is a train wreck, the only thing making you think it was ok is the music. That shit is spot on, John Williams is the fucking man, too bad they haven't given him any good material to work with in 35 years. JJ is the worst thing that ever happened to science fiction movies. (especially because retards lap it up and ask for more)

True story - when I was 12 my family drove to Florida from Nova Scotia (my crazy dad was scared of heights and had horrible claustrophobia so he could not fly). On said trip, we had 5 choices of music - 3 x ABBA, I think 2 of which were their Greatest Hits releases, The Oakridge Boys, and I'll be fucked if I can remember the fifth. But by the time we got home, I knew every popular ABBA song and could probably play them on any instrument, even though I have absolutely zero musical ability. It was the foundation for me becoming the man I am today. No, no, I am NOT flaming gay, but I have horrible taste in music.

Anyway, continue with the movie discussion. The only connection this has to this thread is that it was the TIME of Star Wars, 'cause that was 1982.
lol, that just brought back a memory. my dad had just bought the new David Bowie album, Let's Dance and he loved it. so when we would go anywhere during that summer he would play that entire album during the ride. once we went to a cabin in the western part of the state and he played that one album 90 minutes going and 90 minutes coming back. i was like "dad could you play something else?" his answer, "no"

Just got back. Thought this was mostly dumb(mainly the emperor/rey plot, which is well the whole movie heh) but I didn't walk out hating it like I did with TLJ. Haven't really been paying attention to this thread so I didn't catch how much was spoiled ahead of time. The beginning felt super disjointed and messy, I still have no idea what "lightspeed skipping" is supposed to be.

So here I am with the contrary opinion: I liked it. I loved that they retconned everything that was shitty and SJW about The Last Jedi into the ether. The movie was crammed full but that's what you get when you essentially waste a middle chapter of a trilogy shitting on your fans "subverting expectations" and "breaking genre conventions". This wasn't "get woke, go broke"; I saw very little of that. I saw J.J. trying to salvage a story he had planned that had been wrecked by Rian with every door closed.
J.J. had to bring in the Knights of Ren, the death of Rey's parents, who Snoke was, progress and complete the redemption of Ben/Kylo from where it was left at the end of TLJ. Plus he is trying to wrap up the whole story with the Sith/Jedi thing.

At first glace, I thought this was the best take on the plot leaks possible:
-I thought the ending was far better on screen than reported in the leaks, it seemed terrible on the page. It also seems unnecessary for it to be the culmination of the Sith Jedi fight but so be it.
-At least its a bunch of super weapons rather than a single super weapon this time; I wasn't an EU reader so forgive if this is lifted but better than a 4th deathstar =.
-Everyone got more complete character arcs, with seemingly definitive hetero romantic interests. Gays got a kiss, hurrah. Rose Tico got marginalized, just like Merry. J.J. buddy got a-sploded sad face, why do all the fat xwing pilots have to die? /toosoon #stakes
-I felt like the plotting was fine; J.J. has to open X number of boxes to give the audience a feeling of narrative distance traveled. Partly this is his fault for the soft reboot in TFA and then not plotting out TLJ better or directing it himself.
-Sith Cult was cool, very much a Mass Effect 3 ending in the offing until Kylo/Ben joined the party.
-I was far more satisfied with Rey's progression in the this movie; she is still super-powerful but they try to explain it AND make her work for it.
-I agree with the others that having everyone on the same adventure was so much better than previous, although all three of these movies, this one included, are just aping the plot points of the OT overall.
-I want to take another opportunity to say Fuck you Rian Johnson for making the worst Star Wars movie possible.
-The landing on the ship with the horses was way better than I thought it would be and I didn't mind it at all in the movie. It's a touch silly and I would have preferred a Rebel generals leading a ground assault with Walkers but remember at this point in 1983 we were watching ewoks defeat stormtroopers; This is better.
-Leia worked out much better in this movie than I thought she would, too. It wasn't perfect but I didn't mind at all; way better than CGI Leia in Rogue One.
-Ben's end was far better than the leaks, and fit. It's tough to redeem someone who killed their father and almost their mother; I was happy with the way it worked out.
-Hux made sense; -Daynse made sense; even Palpatine makes a begrudging sense if you think about the fact that the Sith were able to hide under the noses of the Jedi for centuries without being discovered and no one was looking for Palpatine since he was supposed to be dead.

For things I didn't like:

-I want you to command with me! OK! Gen Z view of promotions.
- This movie is stupidly rushed, because they are trying to fit 1.5 movies worth of material into a single movie. Let KK go back to having her own production company like Amy Pascal, so she doesn't muck up any other trilogies. It will also help with the SJW that is in this movie. I didn't see much but I am sure I will be corrected.
-the movie is so kinetic and frenetic at times, it was hard to focus on what was happening or not happening.
-Jedi/Sith aren't Superheroes, they are Gozer the Gozerian level of powerful: Grabbing ships, killing fleets, etc.
-How many planet side trips do they make? In a galaxy where distance doesn't matter, don't they have a droid specialist who can unlock C3PO? I guess in that case we wouldn't get Helmet Spice and The First Order Golden Ticket.

There is more but overall, when I left TLJ, I had a burning that got worse; with ROS, I feel like I watched a movie of someone trying to fix the franchise we both loved as kids. I enjoyed it, with the too much in the first hour and the plot overflow. At least he tried to fix Star Wars and such that he was able, I feel like he did what he could. I was happy with what I got from this movie. That alone far exceeds expectations.

saw it today as well, it was ok. Its a shame they couldn't have started with the story beats of this movie before they began TFA and worked the ideas into a 3 movie trilogy, woulda been decent i think. I agree with rhino, it was interesting to see JJ try so hard to reverse course the shit TLJ did but ultimately it was almost just as bad for different reasons. Its three seperate movies that have very little to do with each other and you can literally watch them in any order and not miss anything. A shame. At least its over.

I look forward to the RLM review of this

this is one of those films where you see it and afterwards you can think of a hundred things that they could have and should have done differently... except it requires things that happened previously to have just... not happened.

i didn't really buy kylo's redemption because it just... happened. there were hardly any mitigating factors. what SHOULD have happened is that kylo is seen throughout the series to be tormented by his own actions as well as those around him (luke's, snoke's, his parent's, etc) but he uses that torment as a sort of conduit for the dark side to empower him. when ray says that she sees the torment of his own actions, kylo doesn't hide it, he brags about it. but, because the dark side is ultimately self-defeating, in a key moment he sees how ray's peace helps her to overcome and THAT'S what strengthens her. despite being left as an orphan, despite being a palpatine, despite having both of her masters die, she still perseveres through peace. meanwhile kylo's guilt and torment gets him only so far and threatens to consume him. and despite all he's done, rey still believes he's worth saving.

that gives a nice little callback to luke and vader (though roles would be somewhat reversed). instead what we got, is kylo feeling his mom die and deciding he should be good again. it feels wholly arbitrary, but we all KNEW it was going to happen one way or another so the WHY ended up not even really being all that important.

but again, that would require an entire different 2nd movie... too much stuff needs to be re-written to allow for good, heartfelt stories. so you sort of just have to accept that JJ did... what he did because he was mostly railroaded into it.

Anyone else laugh because they thought of GLaDOS in a particular scene?

I kind of enjoyed this. It's not perfect but it's also not as horrible as all that has been said about it. It's funny that this could have been a legit good movie if it didn't have to course correct from The Last Jedi. Most of my main issues with it come with the editing and quick cut/jumps. This could have used an extra 30 minutes to smooth out the edges. As far as the story with Palpatine, they definitely borrowed from EU stories. Mainly it brought back some memories of what I read in the Dark Horse comics run with Rey subbing in for Luke.

Every fucking scene is a dumb power creep explosion from JJ, anyone that liked this is a simpleton that enjoys flashy shit that makes zero sense.

If you haven't figured out JJ by now I don't know what to say. He takes old shit then copies that old shit and ups the power level to ridiculous levels.

That is not fucking good nor is it art. Fuck you for liking this garbage, YOU are what is wrong with Star Wars.

This dude's TLJ review was awesome and knows the score:

So he makes it out to sound like you can just skip TLJ the way Rise is written? If so I guess that is a plus? Just skip part two and stop calling it a trilogy.

What was the big secret Finn wanted to tell Rey the whole movie? That he can sense the force? Movie really never mentioned it and it came off as more of a romantic interest . Guess they forgot to explain do to the deluge of shit that was put into this movie.

What was the big secret Finn wanted to tell Rey the whole movie? That he can sense the force? Movie really never mentioned it and it came off as more of a romantic interest . Guess they forgot to explain do to the deluge of shit that was put into this movie.

For a while I was sure it was going to be Finn saying he's in love with Rey...

Then as the movie goes on, and Rey isn't with them anymore, he still won't tell Poe about it... and they keep arguing like an old couple... So I started to think maybe he wanted to ask Rey if she thinks Poe likes him. I mean there isn't really a background for either of them being gay, but the actors expressed they'd have wanted to explore that direction, but the movie is happy with the lesbians at the end.

But then you get this ex-girlfriend of Poe's coming into the story, so that's a dead end.

In the end it's never resolved indeed, so I guess it is either his feelings for her, or the fact that he's force-sensitive and wants to mention it, but I don't see why that would bother him in front of Poe... hell, a year has passed since TLJ so you'd think he'd have had been able to tell Rey either of those things. So Finn really gets nothing in the end, doesn't even hook up with maybe-Lando's-daughter. Finn was a really cool character and would have shined from being written better, but he was mostly wasted in this trilogy. And again, TLJ is really to blame for most of that.

I guess having Rey and Finn be a romance RIGHT after Ben dies and she kissed Ben would have felt like a sloppy seconds moment for Finn, so there was really no satisfying way to handle it with the way the story was trashed by Rian Johnson, and it also feels like there were too many cooks in the kitchen and some plot lines didn't go where they intended or the cuts changed them completely.

Like I'm pretty sure that sith dagger artifact wasn't originally meant to be a sextant, Rey picks it up and immediately feels this dagger was used to do horrible things, and yes we later see it was used to kill her parents but I think in the earlier scene she was refering in the story to sith rituals and horrible sorcery, which would also have been the backstory behind Palpatine's resurrection (because for all his unnatural abilities dark side talk, he basically looked like SCIENCE got him out of death, what with being hooked up to tubes and mechanical contraptions, I'd have prefered sith alchemy or a ritual to possess another body, which could have given a reason why he had his son killed, to enter his body and live on.. but nope..)

Anyway, hopefully they'll reveal the Finn "secret" down the road for a little more closure hehe.
