Are there just no good writers in Hollywood anymore? Are there so few that they only work on a tiny fraction of very specific stuff that they hand pick? I don't get it. You pay these fucks a ton of money and like 5% seem to be worth it. I can count on a few hands the amount of really well written shows/movies I've seen in the past decade. With the amount of pure shit being produced daily that is absolutely appalling.

Any other industry and the government would step in to see how the business continues to operate in the black, but Hollywood has become the en vogue way to launder corrupt (illegal?) foreign $ so no surprise it's in the state it's in with virtually zero oversight and fraudulent, illegal bullshit happening on the reg... but yes, i think the very fact that the leaks seem hackneyed is proof that they are real. anytime a leak comes out and it makes sense and fans get excited about it, it's fake.

You could write a doctoral thesis on this topic. But the short of it is that crap has always existed. RLM has essentially made a series out of watching B movies from the past. The internet and the rise in outrage culture has ensured that you get to hear about the crap now instead of being quietly released direct to video.

Also, relatively cheap CGI has made it really easy to polish a turd. Imagine Lucas having to use puppets and practical effects on the prequels. That might not have saved the movies, but that "tedium" and effort involved might have rubbed off on other parts of the movie. At the very least, more people with standards would have been attached to the product.

there's definitely something to be said about extreme effort in one area raising the bar in others. when you look at the OT from a technical standpoint, it really stands out. the amount of stuff that they had to be creative with just to shoot the scene is pretty amazing. i think if you were to make star wars today under the same conditions that it was made with back then, with the ease of access to CGI, it would feel like a syfy original. maybe i'm being overly harsh... but there's a reason why the remastered versions of the original trilogy just don't feel right.

oh not seeing him(emperor) leaving is easy to "handwave" the ship was behind the explosion = we never saw the transport ship/shuttle/whatever or he just jumped to light speed while inside the ships bay with the ship's nose pointing out the docking port.

again, i think it is silly to bring him back, but shrug, they are doing it.

This is a short clip from a Plinkett video (don't know where the original video is from) but it seems that Lucas thinks that excessive studio meddling is to blame for the nosedive in movie quality. The complete death of creativity certainly points in that direction.

This would literally be the only thing that could redeem the franchise for me. If they went totally off the rails and embraced the Darth Jar Jar theory, and have him show himself as the big bad. The final trailer's "palp voice" is a twist showing that Jar Jar was using him like a meat puppet to speak through and Jar Jar can change his voice to whatever he wants, and that he's been trying to conquer the galaxy the whole time.

Yes, that is the essence of it. Movies are still way too expensive to make, and so imagination, which entails a lot of risk, needs to be curtailed--and that ends up hurting good films. What he fails to point out though is that it ALSO ends up blocking a lot of absolute dog shit from getting made, because a lot of people THINK they have good imaginations but in reality they'd produce dog shit.

We won't get a true revolution in movies until the average 'art house' movie can do what a current big budget film can do. And the only thing that will bring that about is technology, cheaper, easier tools that can be used by more people. Digital cameras, and computers and programs which allow far faster video and audio editing have allowed these great small budget films to be made (As someone mentioned, the resurgence in horror is a direct result of this) and now we're going to be waiting on AI, and other 'smart' tools to allow us to replace legions of special effects artists. It will probably happen in the next century or so, but its going to be the next 'leap'.

When current special effects go through a revolution akin to what digital video editing was to old physical splicing/editing, you'll have a ton of new good films produced. But as said, that's not going to come from any social conventions changing in Hollywood--it will come from technology.

There is no possible way this movie is good.

Rian Johnson achieved something that George Lucas should thank the heavens for. He ruined the franchise in one movie more than Lucas managed to do in three.

I am with RLM and Mike Stoklasa. TLJ should have ended on Snoke's ship with Kylo offering his hand to Rey, begging for her to join him... aaaaand cut to credits.

Even then, with how bad the Luke stuff was, it all could have been salvaged. Kylo could have gone good, Rey could have gone bad.... but as it was, Rian fucked it all up and decided to turn them both into SJW Cartoons instead of real people.

Star Wars is done. The Jedi are done. JJ is good at making movies, but not writing stories. Whatever ROS is, it will look good, but it will be hollow. Rian and Kathleen already sucked the guts out.
