Yeah I tried the SP4 at the store. I just didn't like the feel of it compared to the Ipad Pro.

SP4 is a much better system tho since it is a true OS, and you can use manga studio etc. I think if I was going to buy something more like that I would get the Cintiq companion 2.

Also if you have an apple OS on another PC you can use Astropad to make your ipad pro a full blown operating system.
According to the reviewers it performs as well, and sometimes better then a full blown Cintiq.

I put a protection screen on my ipad pro, and it makes it feel pretty close to paper versus how slick the normal screen is.

Think I'm going to just ask for another Nexus 7 tablet if my wife or family can find one. The iPad mini would be great but it's a little much for something to read Rerolled on the couch or play a little mobile game. Unless anyone else knows something in the 7" range that isn't $400.

Nvidia's Shield Tablet? $200. Good for sitting around reading forums, playing dinky mobile games, or streaming games from your computer if you have a graphics card and network that supports it and want to get the controller too.

That's an interesting idea I didn't even think about. Thanks for the heads up.
The cheap Kindle is 7" too, depending on what you're planning to do with it - for the stuff I do (web browsing, some wimpy tablet gaming - Hearthstone is probably the most intense, Plex and TiVo streaming) it runs amazing. Which is shocking for $35. (I got it during the 30% off thing as an impulse)

Only 8 GB of space, but since it takes microSD up to 128 GB it really doesn't matter.

Ordered a Surface Book last night, only cost me $350. The wife had some points saved up from one of those point reward programs and I just paid the difference with money. The only downside is it will not ship for 2 weeks, but I really don't need it until January 1st anyway, starting a new job then.

Pretty excited to mess around with it.

Ended up getting the Shield K1 for Christmas and really like it. Haven't really jumped in to any shield specific stuff, still just regular couch tablet use. One thing though is the battery life is really bad and charging can take forever. It lasts maybe 70% as long as the old Nexus 7.

edit: seems like a known (or at least commonly reported) issue with Marshmallow and one of the processors locking at 100%, even when in stand by. Would explain why tablet dies over night. 'Miscellaneous' process in battery manager shows like 60-70% usage for me.

Reading on a Kindle vs Reading on Tablets:

Is the difference really that profound? I definitely want to pick up an e-reader so I can stop buying physical books, but since I'm buying a tablet I kind of just want to buy a real tablet! I do a ton of reading though, and my eyes already hurt from staring at a computer screen 12 hours a day. Anyone read extensively on their tablet? Should I just buy a cheap Kindle now and then get a real tablet later?

The only real difference is if you get a paperwhite kindle. Anything besides a paperwhite kindle is just a stripped-down regular android tablet that is locked by Amazon into only using the Amazon app store rather than the full google play store. They are dirt cheap at times though, but are usually fairly lacking in power compared to the better full android tablets from Google, Samsung, etc.

Just use a regular tablet, the kindle app is perfectly fine and still has all the same options like night text mode, font scaling, etc.

Personally, I think the Nexus 9 is the best tablet going for book reading. It's a nice 4:3 aspect ratio screen which is perfect for books(but most media viewing will be letterboxed because of that). I have one at home and my wife takes it to work every day to read books on in her down time.

Maybe it is from reading on a Kindle since Gen 1 or so but I cannot male the switch to tablet reading. Could be age, or eyes, or whatever but even with night mode and various other tweaks I find it uncomfortable staring at a tablet screen. There's still a glow and brightness that ends up straining me eyes. Also the slight weight differences adds a little discomfort. Even my Nexus 7 was noticeably heavier than the Paperwhite when laying down and reading in bed. I'm a big advocate of the Kindles but realize it'll come down to personal preference.

Unrelated topic: it turns out the Nvidia Shield k1 cannot survive being dropped in a bubble bath.

If you read enough books, paperwhite. Unfortunately the v2 one I had sucked at pdfs so I returned it. Maybe they're better at it now but I had a lot of random shit I wanted to read besides e books.

If you already have eyestrain I'd say get the Kindle. Or Kobo or nook or whatever the fuck else is popular now, though the paperwhite seems like the obvious choice I guess.

Had a kindle 4 for a few years, just switched to a paperwhite 3. I'd never read books on a tablet.

Regarding the new paperwhite, I'd easily trade half the weight of the paperwhite for a 2 days battery life or something like that. The kindle 4 was much lighter and I loved that.

I'm still rolling with an OG nook 3G. It's a GD miracle it's never shit the bed on me, or even given me a single issue. <3 physical page turn buttons.

Night and day. I cannot read on my tablet for more than like 20 minutes. e-ink is just so, so much better.

wife has kindle paper white and i have a nexus 7. i don't notice the difference AT ALL but she only will use the kindle, says too much eye strain with tablets and she prefers the weight (its like 1/5th the weight of the nexus). i'm also an easy sleeper though, 99% of the time after 3 pages i'm fast asleep although a few books will keep me up for hours.

still i prefer a real tablet, nothing beats streaming seinfeld, archer, or porn on it. can't do that on a paperwhite!

I used to think eReaders we dumb... then I got one. I freaking love my e ink Kindle. Don't remember the model but it's only a few years old. Battery lasts over a week of average reading and over a month on standby. Physical buttons and no back light.
Also swear by my galaxy s 10.5 for everything else. Watch lots of streaming stuff in HD. Picture is gorgeous. Only negative is the built in speakers are a tad soft when watching a movie with the wife, headphones are fine.

If you have a nvidia shield tablet, don't do the marshmallow update. Shit bricks the wifi settings even after a reset. Pissed.

For READING e-ink readers are heads and shoulders above a normal LCD tablet- I still use my orig Nook for reading. I want a glow one for night time reading as that is still less stress for me than a standard LCD.

It's time to replace old faithful Nexus 7, i'm looking at a Google Pixel C and Tab S2 9.7, thoughts from someone who made this decision? Mostly use for streaming media - netflix, twitch, youtube and a few games.
