Nope, no surprise there. I bought a $5 USB OTG cable and a $4 app (Nexus Media Importer) so I can use USB sticks to my heart's content on my Nexus 10. And yes, I know I could have rooted it and not paid for the app, but I've never bothered rooting my tablet or phone as I have zero interest.

So, I got my Ipad Miini 2 in yesterday, and was really disappointed.

My Ipad 2 is way better, I'll explain.

A) It's allot heavier then I thought it would be
B) It runs extremely hot
C) Apps lag in it ( how is this possible??? it has a way faster processor...)

Besides reading books/comics etc off of Icloud, I mainly use my Ipad 2 as a portable sketchbook.
It is wonderful. The Ipad Mini 2 on the other hand lags in every drawing app. It's like the cursor is trying to catch up.

First apple product I've ever really not liked. Totally not worth it imo.

Took it back to the store for a full refund.

My Ipad 2 is something I am still very content with.

Not trying to be an Apple hater, but why would you ever want an iPad if you mainly use it as a sketchbook? Galaxy Note tablet will destroy it in accuracy and input lag, and any decent Windows tablet with a Wacom stylus will crush a Galaxy Note. Even a cheapo tablet with an N Trig stylus is infinitely better than a capacative stylus, which is like drawing with a blunt, laggy crayon. If you're serious about taking notes or drawing, active digitizer or bust in my opinion.

Acutely my Ipad 2 has no cursor lag that I can pick up on, which is what surprised me that a much beefier tablet had a HUGE amount of lag.

The biggest thing between the tablets is the form factor, weight,Heat buildup and OS.
The Ipad for me gives the most comfortable experience out of any tablet I've tested.
I have no problem adapting to a non capactive stylus. Technical illustration is almost all what you have learned so you could hand me anything, and it wouldn't matter.

I can also be dead on accurate with a non capactive stylus because Ive trained myself to use that tool. A blunt crayon will only produce a line so small, where as a Stylus can have a fixed dead line, and the ability to zoom in on the fly to further adjust that line width based on how close you are zoomed in. Those two tools really can not be compared.
Yeah It would be nicer with a smaller stylus, but honestly it barely matters to me. The principles all still stay the same.

If I can wip out an Ipad ,and do some quick life drawings/thumbnails anywhere I'm a happy camper.

There's no such thing as the best tool for a really educated artist, it's what he is comfortable with.

I own many devices btw, Galaxy Note 3, a Wacom Tablet. A 21ux Cintiq, a Cintiq hybrid, and the Ipad 2.

Ipad 2 is still my go to digital sketchbook, for the finished stuff I just got to the Cintiq.

How wimpy do you have to be to think an ipad mini is heavy?

It shouldn't lag on that stuff. It might be a faulty one. Did you set it up by using an icloud backup? A friend of mine used an ipad 1 backup and her Air ran crappy. I had her set it up as a new ipad and the problems went away.

Don't be a retard, it's not heavy compared to the other tablets out there. I expect super light from Apple much like all there products. I don't want to pick up any apple hardware, and be like this feels like everything else.

So when I say it's heavier then what I expected, that doesn't mean it's acutely heavy. It means that the unit compared to the way it looks, and being an apple product didn't live up to how I imagined it.

It's a little over 12 ounces, and the Note 3 is a little under 6 ounces. The Ipad air is 16 ounces.
Ipad mini 2 is double the size of the Note 3, and it doubled it ounces. Ipad Air is around double the size of the Ipad mini 2, and the Ipad air only added 4 ounces.

That barely bothers me as much as the heating issue, and cursor lag.

And the lag is from the unit itself. We tried two others at the apple store , even going as far as to turn off that new motion shit.
Every drawing program had noticeable cursor lag.

How is reading books on the Nexus 7? I've never read books on a tablet or e-reader but I will probably start when I finally buy one...

If at all possible get a kindle paperwhite. It is superior in every way then using a tablet to read. If you plan on only reading on the tablet for lets say 20 min or so at a time then get the tablet. If not do yourself a favor and get the paperwhte.

Fucking great as long as you set your nook/kindle app tp "night mode" which is white lettering on a black background(like this forum)

Can read for hours with no eye strain.

Seconded. If you read a lot, an e-ink device is is the way to go. I've got a first gen Paperwhite and I've been very happy with it. The screen on the N7 is nice, so it might work for you, but I'd always recommend an e-reader to anyone who reads a lot.

Bros one more question. She just saw the surface tablet and liked the way it looks. I'm not opposed to it as it runs windows and looks fairly decent. On Black Friday both the surface and iPad mini are $199. For that price which would be a better deal?

Surface.

16 gig first generation/non retina mini versus a Surface RT 32GB windows tablet with a non capacative stylus

No contest.

Not sure if the RT sucks or not. I know the Pro is amazeballs.

Yeah just realized it is the RT, I will have to read more reviews but after initial glancing it looks like the RT sucks hard. Plus didn't realize the keyboard cost so much. Got a few days to decide.

At that price range, you might want to go with something else,

You are screwed regardless. 16 gb on a non retina display pretty much sucks, and RT isn't the best of the Surface tech

This. Everybody with an e-ink reader is always trying to justify the extra device by saying reading on a tablet will kill your eyes. Use the white text on black background and it's not a problem. I've read many books on my original kindle fire, having sessions where I'll go nearly all day on a weekend, and never had any issues at all with eye strain. I'm sure there can still be some justification for getting a dedicated e-reader if you are concerned about battery life, or want a dedicated, lighter device, but a 7-inch tablet will work fine.

thanks for the tips. I don't read that often so I'll go with night mode instead of buying another device.

Is KitKat for the Nexus 10 delayed? I've been expecting the update on my tablet for a while not, but nothing...
