Did I mention how linear the game is? You can barely go anywhere until disc 3. And don't forget unskippable tutorials!

FFVIII was the beginning of the path towards FFXIII. Everyone who likes 8 is responsible for 13.
Besides, FFIX isclearlythe best Final Fantasy.

IX/X had two of the most interesting systems of acquiring abilities, and I wish more games copied it. VIII's could have been amazing too if implemented a bit differently.

IV (II-SNES US) and III (SNES US) are they two best FF's in my opinion. From the day it came out until this very day, I feel that FFVII's success was the downfall of the franchise. Kind of like a WoW situation. FFVII (and WoW) are good games, I have nothing against them whatsoever but, their success has altered the future of their respective franchises and genres. Of course, that is merely an opinion and I will say there has been some good FF's that I have enjoyed but I would like to see a nod back to the older games.

I agree, FFVII's success hurt the franchise but only because square learned the wrong lessons from it. For whatever reason square's number one take away from 7 was they should put all of their time and money into graphics.

XII IZJS is the best. Fact.
What made it so much better? I read about it and it didn't seem all that special to me. XII was one of my favorites (The story was a big limp dick though) as far as graphics, gameplay, etc.

8 was the first one I didn't finish. It ruined the perfect score I had with that series!

Lots of things, but my top 3 would be:

1. Actual job system with a separate license board for each one.
2. Fixed retarded shit like the Zodiac Spear chest that you needed to be Nostra-fucking-damus to know not to open in the very beginning of the game. Bunch of other loot placement changes as well.
3. Hold down L1 and the game runs in super fast speed.

Full list of changes from FF Wiki:
The Zodiac Job System - There are now twelve License Boards, each one representing a job. Once a character chooses a job it cannot be changed. Isolated licenses can be accessed by unlocking Espers and Quickenings.

Trial Mode - The party must fight through 100 stages, each one containing stronger monsters. Completing this mode unlocks New Game+: Weak Mode.

Controllable Guests - Guest characters now be controlled, and their gambits can be edited. Their equipment cannot be removed.

Controllable Espers - Espers can be controlled once summoned, and their gambits can be edited. The player can use their ultimate attack at will.

Speed Boost - Pressing the Playstation-Button-L1 speeds up the game, making getting around easier. The music and cutscenes still play at normal speed.

Gambit Changes - There are 16 new gambits. All the gambits can be bought upon leaving Barheim Passage.

Item Changes - New items have been added, and some of their effects have been slightly changed.

Enemy Changes - Enemies have been changed slightly, plus new enemies have been added. A battle against all five Judge Magisters is also included.

Magick Changes - Water and Watera are renamed to Aqua and Aquara. Many spells have been re-categorized; Bravery and Faith are now White Magick for example. Cure and all tier 1 Black Magick elemental spells have an area of effect (same as their higher tier counterpart) instead of targeting only a single unit. Not all magick can be bought, and some must be found in treasure chests.

Equipment Changes - New weapons have been added, like the Excalipoor, while others have been slightly changed. Armor and accessories have also been slightly changed. Some weapons have different elemental alignments.

Shop Listings - Some shops have had their inventory changed.

Hunt Reward Changes - Rewards for defeating Marks have slightly changed.

Mist Knack (Quickening) Changes - Mist knacks no longer take up MP. Instead, they have their own Mist gauge.

MP Changes - Since Mist Knacks do not use MP now, obtaining Mist Knacks does not increase MP. Instead, characters simply get more MP as they level up. Max MP is determined by the character's job.

New Game+ - Two New Game+ modes are available. Strong Mode, where all characters begin at level 90, and Weak Mode, where all characters begin at level 1 and never level up. Nothing carries over into these new save files.

Treasure Respawns - Treasures pots now respawn by just moving one screen away.

Treasure Item Changes - Some items inside coffers have been switched around, added, or removed.

Break Damage Limit - There is no damage limit anymore. If a character does more than 9,999 damage, the game will show it. Against weak enemies, it is possible to achieve over 100,000 HP of damage with a single attack. This gives the strongest magick spells greater potency to rival melee attack with high hit combo.

And personally I thought the plot and characters were the best part. It might not have been the most exciting story, but at least it wasn't full of angsty melodramatic bullshit like so many other JRPGs. And 4 out of 6 characters being good is a far greater percentage than one can usually expect.

I had an email today from Amazon. Looks like Final Fantasy XV is scheduled for release in 2014. They gave me a place holder delivery date of December 31st, 2014.

They gave me the same date for Kingdom Hearts III. Good deal.

In FF8 you don't NEED to draw 100 of everything, get 3000 HP refining Curagas (don't think I knew the Tornado one) and go around with no encounter junctioned (wtf I WANTED to level up and have harder bosses) - but if you want to minmax then the option is there. You know you could spend hours running in circles levelling up in any RPG or weigh down the D Pad during the river rapids in FF6. This was before most of the internet so you only figured that stuff out on your 2nd playthrough or more.

FF9 has the total opposite battle system with NO choices on rails from start to finish. Oh look the new town has new equipment with new abilities, I guess I need to learn those before the next town with new equipment and new abilities... x 50. I can appreciate the controversy of FF8 but FF9 has one of the worst battle systems in the entire series (I know older ones used it but that years earlier on NES/SNES for fucks sake).

One of the things I didn't like about 9 was it forced characters on you that you didn't want to play while locking out your levelled/geared characters from specific fights. Oh, and fights which you couldn't win. Nothing quite so frustrating as "winning" a fight only to get your arse handed to you as part of the storyline.

I personally enjoyed 8, the cutscenes were pretty amazing in it, most especially the scenes where the two gardens were fighting one another and you were fighting amid background battles. The ending as well is one of my favourites in any game I've played before or after. The final fights though were very easy, I seem to recall I'd sat on some potions/items throughout the game that gave temporary invulnerability and I just popped those on the final fight and beat it without breaking a sweat.

I miss the card games from those older FF's. I disliked 9 personally even tho i played through the majority of it. Prior to 7 i had never played a FF, but 7,8, and 10 were my jam back then. Ever since however i've not found any interest in another FF title until Versus since they all look like a cast of models surrounding an annoying advancement system. I completely dislike the build everyone to do everything and prefer set roles. I am pretty much the minority on this and thats fine, hopefully other RPG series can come out and shed new interesting light into a dulling genre.

I remember beating ff8 when I was around 13 or something, literally don't remember a single thing about the combat system at all. I just remember the game being awesome. I feel if I played it again id hate it, so I will leave it alone and let it live its untarnished legacy in my mind.
