A lot of those laws and regulations do date back to the end of prohibition, but all of those beer & liquor companies were around LONG before that. Anheuser-Busch, Miller, Jack Daniels, jim Beam, Bacardi, etc, were all around decades before prohibition, and they just sat on their hands for a few years, biding their time until it ended and they could start producing/selling in the US again. Prohibition was just a small hiccup for all of them as they produced other products & distributed in other countries, waiting on the US to repeal prohibition.

They were all in position to jump immediately back into the fray, with loads and loads of money to shape the new laws and regulations that were going to govern the industry in the US.

As far as beer goes, Yuengling, Schlitz, AB, & Miller were all already huge, national companies by the late 1800s.

I know they were around but what I question was how much influence they actually had and why they would have wanted the three tier system even if they had the influence to insure it would be created. They're leveraging it to their advantage now because of a relatively recent trend in the market.

Darkness Day and I missed out. Gonna have to hunt on Monday for it in stores and then look for it again in November when the BA stuff hits retail.

New Belgium's Pumpkick is pretty decent. I like that that the pumpkin flavor is more present, not too heavy on the spice, little bit of tartness.

I had this beer over the weekend

Saison Noir | Rockmill Brewery | BeerAdvocate

It was really different. Generally with a saison you expect something a bit tart and sweet. This tasted almost like a stout but wasn't nearly as heavy as a typical stout. Very heavy chocolate and raspberry flavors, though. If you find it around I suggest giving it a whirl.

I'm digging all the experimental saisons that have been coming out. It's like the new IPA. I embrace this.

Pico - Craft Beer at Home by PicoBrew Inc Kickstarter

Anyone see this yet? I must admit that I am incredibly intrigued, and am tempted to back this. Since the retail is going to be $1k, and you can order it now for $559.
For $600 you could get a pretty kickass traditional homebrew setup that will allow you to brew up to 5 gallons of beer at a time, and the ingredients will be a fraction of the cost of of the PicoBrew recipe kits (my average 5 gallon batch cost around $25 and nets 50 12oz bottles), granted it won't be "fully automated."

With that said, I see no reason why you couldn't make quality beer in the PicoBrew system, but you'll want to make sure you have some way to control the fermentation temperature. Fermentation is exothermic (meaning it produces its own heat) and generally speaking once you start getting into the 70F range and higher your yeast start producing a higher quantity of esters which generally speaking are not desirable flavors in your beer. I ferment most of my ales at 62F which usually means the ambient air around my fermenter is in the low-to-mid 50's. Most homebrewers finally get rid of that "homebrew flavor" and start making commercial quality beers once they figure out how to control and manage fermentation temperatures.

Tried the Born Yesterday Lagunitas and I really enjoyed it. I've also been getting more and more into the sours, and anything made by Almanac is really tasty. Unfortunately they don't sell them in CT so I had to pick some up while I was in Manhattan a few weeks back. Their citra is insane and I highly recommend it.

Haven't tried Born Yesterday yet but I heard the Bengals bar has it so I may get the opportunity tonight. A friend told me it's really good.

Found some Pseudo Sue tonight... god damn it's one of the best "American Pale Ales" I've had. Also managed to pick up two bombers of Brewhouse Coffee Stout from Central Waters for $6/bomber. Their beer is usually stellar, so I'm hoping this is as well.

Also managed to get a 4pk of the Bourbon-Barrel-Aged-Vanilla-Bean-Cinnamon Buffalo Sweat from Tallgrass. It's great in this weird way. The cinnamon is present but not overpowering... but I really need to try the non-cinnamon version.

Fuck, from a brewing perspective I'd love to see the inside of White Labs.
