No? I'm just not a paranoid fucking freak. If you're so afraid of our government, move? I don't get it. It's a fucking Kinect, it's not a sign of the apocalypse. As everyone else who is sane has already posted you fucking carry around a microphone/camera/gps in your pocket all goddamn day.

So you know every single one of the 15000 federal crimes on the book currently?
Nah. However if it's like you say, and I'm breaking laws right now as I sit here typing this, then Kinect or no Kinect they could come here and swoop me up whenever they please for whatever they please. At least with Kinect I'll know when shoes come out that match my couch.

Its really funny that you call it conspiracy theory drivel when we have the US government flat out admitting to accessing Google et al's targeted advertising, search, gps and other data at will for their purposes as they desire.
So if it is already happening to me in my home thanks to Google and my smartphone what harm is there in adding Kinect to the mix?

Yeah everyone said that when the Wii came out and they genuinely had a good time with it until they started expecting more out of their games and wanted "gamer" type games on the Wii instead of just fun games for kids and parties. MS "could" bring that level of fun to parties and kids. They know though it will never happen unless they force the issue.
Dont say everyone, i didnt get that shit - My kid sister got it, played it for a month and its been sitting ever since. I got a Wii-U and thank god Amazon doesnt need a reason for you to send shit back. I own 2 kinects in my house, and both of them are in the attic from which they will never return. Everyone isnt into everything and just because some like it dont mean others will and forcing it on people just rubs them the wrong way.

I don't disagree but MS won't get good Kinect games unless they do this. Total chicken or the egg scenario. I hate the Kinect myself but that is why MS has to do this if they are going to continue pursuing the Kinect.

We have proof of this conspiracy or just patents on what-ifs?
It's commonly known it's how they make money these days, so I don't really see it as a conspiracy theory (even Gaige gets it, judging from his post above). All these companies can get away this as long as they don't tie the information personally to a person, and instead they can tie the information to demographics.

You can read thru theirpolicies, which basically states they will sell consumer behavior info.

Two wrongs fallacy mixed with a tu quo que, burden shifting, good old appeal to Patriotism. I'm not afraid of government, there is a limit and that limit is putting active live microphones and cameras in my home for entertainment purposes.

Nah. However if it's like you say, and I'm breaking laws right now as I sit here typing this, then Kinect or no Kinect they could come here and swoop me up whenever they please for whatever they please. At least with Kinect I'll know when shoes come out that match my couch.
This doesn't make sense and is blatantly disproven by the fact that they are able to execute secret warrants to access all this data at any time, and Microsoft is not allowed to say anything about it, and no one can sue either the Government or Microsoft either before or after the fact. Who owns that data, Gaige? Do I not have a right anymore to the recordings of what goes on...in my own home? Cause that's the argument you're making here.

So if it is already happening to me in my home thanks to Google and my smartphone what harm is there in adding Kinect to the mix?
The fact you can't see how stupid this argument is (Well if I'm already a victim, why should it matter if someone else victimizes me as well?) is a sign that it is in fact the fucking apocalypse.

That's how fucking stupid this argument is.

Exactly, and as I pointed out earlier, you can "opt in" to making the information far more specific. But you can't opt out of giving the information at all.

And who owns it? Microsoft does.

Microsoft will potentially own recordings of you, living in your living room, that they can do anything with they want.

Anyone want to seriously argue that's totally cool? I mean its just a corporation right? What could they possibly do to abuse that sort of data?

Listen: When you get rid of all your technological gadgets and live off the grid, I'll pay attention to you. While you're here, on the internet, with your smartphone and everything else I'm going to just ignore your stupid Kinect ranting for what it is: bullshit.

The fact is all the shit you're worried about Kinect doing is already being done to you. If you really cared that much about it you'd do something about it. You don't. You're just being sensationalist.

I don't give a fuck if the government gets Microsoft to tell them shit they can already find out from numerous other sources. Not if it means I can call audibles in Madden 25 on my Xbox One by just talking to my Xbox.

The conspiracy theory comment was your insane drivel about the NSA and the government swooping in and demanding that Microsoft let them watch what is happening in your living room on a Wednesday night. My guess is no one gives a fuck what you're doing, at all.
Have you been watching the news? Seriously.

Yes, no one gives a fuck what you do on wed night. But if one day you do something considered subversive--like say, protesting a bank that's robbed people by forging signatures (Look up robo-signing)....then if they had access to taped records of your activities, they could comb through it and find things that could force you to be silent, or "oops" it might get leaked to the media or some tabloid. This is a real threat to a lot of people who are trying to, you know, actually do important things in their life, Gaige.

And before you say "they won't be recording if you aren't important!"--yes, they will. That's because memory is, by far, the fastest growing component of Moore's law. It's become exponentially cheaper to store information over the last 20 years (Compare a hard drive 10 years ago to a USB thumb drive today.)---right NOW they are already recording anything they feel MIGHT one day prove useful, once the Data centers in the midwest are finished (Yes, there is a massive one being set up), they will record anything they can...And then when the information becomes NEEDED they will go look for it. So it's not a stretch to believe your stupid Xbox camera data will be there.

The fact is all the shit you're worried about Kinect doing is already being done to you. If you really cared that much about it you'd do something about it. You don't. You're just being sensationalist.

Except, you know, if your kids do something wrong or your wife does--or any part of your family that would only be caught through a peep into your home. Do you even understand how valuable surveillance within a home is? It's the golden goose of data collection. All other data you give out, is deliberate--you control putting it out there. By talking into your phone, sending an email, doing a search, posting--it all starts with you doing something to record that data (The phone is a stretch, but it isn't always on.)

Kinect is always on--it does not require you to take that first step, it's simply watching. You seriously can't see the difference between it and those other things? Really? (And if you don't believe it's always watching, look up some of the patents MS has for the kinect.)

Exactly? They're already doing it right now. Xbox One isn't even out yet. They're using existing technology which most of you probably have in your pockets, car and houses as you post this. So what difference does it make? None. Either move to a different country where this shit isn't happening or shut the fuck up and wave your arms around to catch fish in 1080p glory on your Xbox One.

Appeal to inconsistency fallacy.

While you're here, on the internet, with your smartphone and everything else I'm going to just ignore your stupid Kinect ranting for what it is: bullshit.
Dysphemistic attempt to downplay the fact that your argument is that everyone should just give corporations all access passes to our houses, SO THEY CAN PROFIT AT OUR EXPENSE, just because you say so.

The fact is all the shit you're worried about Kinect doing is already being done to you.
Irrelevant two wrongs fallacy. You don't get to justify one bad act with another bad act.

If you really cared that much about it you'd do something about it. You don't. You're just being sensationalist.
You don't get to speak for me. I apparently do care about it because I'm here making it clear that it bothers me and that others should seriously consider this in their decision making process as to which console to purchase in the coming year. There's NOTHING sensationalistic about this, we have the NSA already admitting they will demand access to this kind of data and backdoors into these kinds of systems, we already have them admitting that they will subpoena this data anytime they want, we already have Microsoft flat out stating they'll use this data to profit from it. Literally, calling me a sensationalist is you being a fucking shill and a hack apologist and denialist.

I don't give a fuck if twelve men rape me repeatedly without courtesy reach arounds or a spit lube job. Not if it means I can call audibles in Madden 25 on my Xbox One by just talking to my Xbox.

I dunno Gaige, but clearly, if true, the hilariousness of this conversation just skyrocketed exponentially.

Watch your bandwidth, do you really think nobody will notice HD video of them being uploaded 24/7? I don't think you are thinking this through.

No company in their right mind is going to want that bandwidth and storage bill for jack and shit.
You would be right if the device was only a camera plugged to the internet, but it's a camera plugged to a processing unit that ships with algorithms to identify people, vectorize their limbs, detect their heart rate and decipher their speech (among other things). It's a bit too much for comfort, even if it's only data gathered for marketing.

I bet your ass already has a Xbox One on preorder, doesn't it. Admit it. You fucking love being watched.

Oh that's right, you try to sugar coat it by calling it ephebophile. I'm sorry if I've offended your delicate "not quite" pedophiliac sensibilities.
There is no not quite about it. Pedophile literally means attraction to pre-pubescent children. Find me a 16 year old that still hasn't went through puberty and I'll consider your commentary.

Sorry, the afraid of the government sissy nutjobs have already posted in this thread that the NSA can and does turn on/off your devices at will and can turn on/off the microphones/cameras at will. If you own the device they can get whatever they want to get about you.

Which makes crying about Kinect even more silly imo.

Unless of course you guys don't have smartphones, computers, tablets or anything of the type. Maybe you still communicate via smoke signals and carrier pigeon and drive a covered wagon.

They are pushing the Kinect because with it being optional nobody will buy it and therefore the games made for it will get very little funding because it's a small portion of that market exclusive to one console only so no multi platform either. The only chance they have of good games coming out for the Kinect is making it mandatory on every console made. The only way you get "innovation" is by forcing it.
Here is the difference between the Microsoft of 2013 and the Microsoft of the 90s, or the Google of today. Microsoft could have pushed kinect, and online DRM and all that jazz if they had given massive incentives to the consumer to buy into "the vision". Its so blindingly obvious what they should have done, that I still can't understand why they fucked everything up so bad.

Announce the xbox one with all the E3 bullshit. Also announce that new AAA games bought digitally on xbox one will now cost $40, Microsoft is waiving their $10 game console fee to publishers for the next 5 years to help subsidize the lower cost. Also announce that they will be selling a xbox live subsidized version, which will sell for $299 (or even $199) and require a 2 year xbox live commitment (if you cancel xbl before then your xbox stops playing games). Also announce that all XBL users will get a rotating set of free games like PS+, and that they intend to put out weekly sales ala steam.

Wham. People aren't thrilled about DRM and always on, but weighed against the balance of free games, AAA titles being $20-30 cheaper than PS4, loads of game sales, and a buy in price $200-300 cheaper and people will cheer for you and not care too much about kinect being bundled in.

You can't try to push the future from a position of weakness, you have to sneak it in under the disguise of christmas presents for everyone. Yeah, Microsoft would have lost tons of money but balance that against having the lions share of the centralized home media server for the next 10 years in most homes, and then slowly being able to leverage that into small ways to make money against a huge marketshare. Now they will get maybe 50% of the market (if lucky) and not be able to set the pace for anything important. No AAA studio will ever put kinect stuff in their games because PS4 doesn't have it and they can't be sure people just don't have it hooked up facing the back wall or whatever.
