From my experience the only tangible extra support for one vendor is usage of some new feature of the newer cards. Given that the consoles have static cards and both AMD/NVIDIA will continue putting their new features on new cards the fact that Xbox/PS4 uses AMD probably won't matter much for gamers.

For AMD the company though I imagine it's huge.

Well, possibly so but depending on the terms they got. Console deals are strange beasts because chipset vendors are often pressured into making a valuation far below their markup in other markets simply because they want their chips to be featured. It is advertising in a sense and they'll take a hit to be there. Now, how much of a hit is a good question but pitting AMD versus NVidia in a bidding war is a win-win for Sony and MS.

Then again, they might engage in a little light collusion too and be making a killing. I don't really know.

There's probably not that much money in it for AMD. I'm guessing those GPUs are delivered at or below cost.

It's huge for allowing them to maintain scale, though. They have suffered greatly in the PC enthusiast market in recent years, and this will allow them to maintain the scale they need to compete with NVIDIA on upcoming GPUs. Optimization could be a big deal too.

It's a great thing for PC enthusiasts.

Didn't AMD double in stock price when it was announced they would be in the ps4/xbone?

Something like that, yeah. It is a lot of money. If they both sell as much as this generation that's their hardware in 150-160+ million units right there.

A doubling of the stock price could easily occur even if all those sales are made at zero net margin. As mentioned, there will be significant positive effects on AMD's competitiveness.

Well thank God for that. Nvidia and Intel need someone to push them.

What is it I am hearing? The PS4 will not be released in Japan in 2013 because not enough games will be ready and/or localized? Is that a PR response to hide the fact a market they are sure to dominate is not high in their priority list?

Anyway, that seems to lessen the chance of seeing many PS4 exclusives from Japan near launch.

If they were smart they would allocate all their PS4's for the west anyways. Sell the shit out of it and get it into every house possible as soon as possible. Xbox One isn't coming out there any time soon and it wont matter anyways. They have Japan on lockdown because Wii u is shit and they don't buy Microsoft. Why waste systems on the Japanese when they can own an entire generation by flooding the market in the west?

I looked at AMD's stock history and it's a real rollercoaster. Up and down between 2 and 8 dollars a share, the console stock boost isn't that big in comparison.

More on topic, seems silly to have two consoles with the same amd cpu, mostly the same gpu, same amount of ram, etc with very close release dates.

I would say that is entirely Microsoft's fault. PS4 appears to be planned and designed for a LONG time prior to release. Xbox was playing catch up. Maybe hoping they could get another year or two out of the 360 before needing to release a new console. They didn't think Sony would have designed theirs already, so they rushed through.

I wouldn't say it's silly. Really the variance in optimal builds has narrowed greatly over the last ten years so it makes sense that the latest consoles have very similar specs. It is a little odd that they have nearly the same exact specs though.

One thing is for sure, it's good for the consumer to have two competing products. Imagine the kind of shit MS would've pulled if Sony was releasing its console next year. You'd probably be forced to sit on a spiked Microsoft brand dildo to get the thing to boot up.

http://www.edge-online.com/news/powe...e-performance/

PlayStation 4 is currently around 50 per cent faster than its rival Xbox One. Multiple high-level game development sources have described the difference in performance between the consoles as "significant" and "obvious."

Our contacts have told us that memory reads on PS4 are 40-50 per cent quicker than Xbox One, and its ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) is around 50 per cent faster. One basic example we were given suggested that without optimisation for either console, a platform-agnostic development build can run at around 30FPS in 1920?1080 on PS4, but it'll run at "20-something" FPS in 1600?900 on Xbox One. "Xbox One is weaker and it's a pain to use its ESRAM," concluded one developer.

Microsoft is aware of the problem and, having recently upped the clock speed of Xbox One, is working hard to close the gap on PS4, though one developer we spoke to downplayed the move. "The clock speed update is not significant, it does not change things that much," he said. "Of course, something is better than nothing."

Even this close to launch, "the hardware isn't locked," said another source. Sony and Microsoft are each still working on the graphics drivers for each console, and Xbox One is lagging behind in this regard - Microsoft "has been late on their drivers and that has been hurting them," said one source. Another described Xbox One's graphics drivers less charitably as "horrible". Both consoles' graphics drivers will continue to improve right up to - and beyond - launch, which will even up the difference in performance a little.

Xbox One does, however, boast superior performance to PS4 in other ways. "Let's say you are using procedural generation or raytracing via parametric surfaces - that is, using a lot of memory writes and not much texturing or ALU - Xbox One will be likely be faster," said one developer.

Both platform holders are, of course, encouraging developers to take advantage of each console's unique features (the DualShock 4's touch pad and Kinect, for example) but there's little enthusiasm for either among the developers we spoke to. "They really want us to make use of platform specific stuff to give their version a leg up over the other," said one source. "But unless there's a good design reason or incentive we rarely do."

Indeed, despite that gulf in speed, the differences between cross platform launch window games will be negligible; with tight deadlines to meet, it's more expedient for developers to deliberately create near-identical versions.

"The poor [graphics] drivers have made it difficult to push either of them, and the developers aren't familiar with the hardware yet," said one source. Another stated that we'll begin to see far greater use of each platform's unique features once we're past the first wave of releases, when developers have more time and experience with each console's quirks.

One source even suggested that enforcing parity across consoles could become a political issue between platform holders, developers and publishers. They said that it could damage perceptions of a cross platform title, not to mention Xbox One, if the PS4 version shipped with an obviously superior resolution and framerate; better to "castrate" the PS4 version and release near-identical games to avoid ruffling any feathers.

This claim was later countered by a contact at a different studio. "It would be totally fine for us to make one version prettier without any political difficulties but it usually doesn't make financial sense," they said, "unless it's a very simple tweak."

The difference between cross platform launch window games will be small, and improved graphics drivers plus the power of the cloud might yet tip the balance in Xbox One's favour. Nonetheless, at launch, PS4 will be the more capable console.

Just bolded some things you conveniently left out. Which is to say that cross platform games will be designed to run on the slowest machine, as per previous console generations. The lowest common denominator always wins.

I suppose I should've said purposefully didn't emphasize them because they don't suit his stance? He links an article that touts how much faster the PS4 is than the Xbone, bolding the part that says that as if to trumpet how much better the PS4 hardware is despite the bottom paragraphs of the article saying that the speed difference won't even matter when playing cross platform games. Seems silly?

They don't contradict his stance they're both referencing launch timeframe and while learning what's simple and what isn't. It doesn't take much reading between the lines to see that those quotes will be different Y2-5 or longer from their choice of phrasing.

If you only care about D1 differences its significant unless you're an idiot you care more about the long haul.

Additionally note anything with a PC version that has graphictweaks even amongst D1 titles will fall under 'easy tweaks' part of why AC4 has many quotes of being nnight and day in looks between XBone and PS4. PS4 is close to a high end PC while XBone is coming closer to a midrange.

Because he can see the forest through the trees to know that they're only referencing launch differences being insubstantial and that with time the rift will grow? Like every other console generation?

Its almost like he's done console stuff before or something to not be shocked by obvious shit that's irrelevant in the long run - or he's a PS4 shill. Pretty sure you've been around long enough to know where he lands - I sure do.
